  • Purpose: This study attempts to explore the subjective experience of frailty among elderly individuals in Korea. Methods: From June to August in 2014, 11 elderly persons who had experienced frailty in a community were interviewed. For data analysis, the method suggested by Colaizzi was applied as a phenomenological method. Results: According to the analysis, the study participants' frailty process was structured in seven categories: (a) 'natural phenomenon with ageing,' (b) 'life force comes to an end,' (c) 'the light in my heart turns off,' (d) 'unavoidable situation,' (e) 'continuous and connected vicious cycle,' (f) 'the limit of recovery energy already passes,' and (g) 'life is supported by someone's help.' Conclusion: The frailty experience in the participants is a natural process of aging, which cause vicious cycle acting with each other among physical, psychological, and social health. It is said that the cycle of frailty was started from weight loss and insufficient sleep, and boostered by pain. The participants from repetition of the vicious cycle become exhausted and pass the threshold of their recovery energy at some points. If they meet with sudden accidents such as falling, traffic accident and so on, they become to live a dependent life supported by someone's help in a moment. To prevent frailty and worsening conditions in Korean elderly individuals, it is recommended to provide a interventional programs using this study's results.

  • This paper discusses the neural network application in the study on the obstacle avoidance of robot manipulator during the trajectory planning. The collision problem of two robot manipulators which are simultaneously moving in the same workspace is investigated. Instead of the traditional modeling method, this paper processing based on the calculation of joint angle in the cartesian coordinate with constrained condition shows the possibility of real time control. The problem of the falling into the local minima is cleared by the adaptive weight factor control using the temperature adding method. Computer simulations are shown for the verification.

  • An inverse self-iterative procedure is developed to estimate layer moduli and stresses in cement concrete pavement systems from the falling weight deflectometer deflection basins. The existing concrete pavement highways are analyzed using coupled analysis procedure of finite element and layer elastic theory for models obtained through factorial design, from which the characteristics of deflection basins are studied and the empirical equations are proposed for the estimation of layer moduli. The empirical equations are used to assume initial moduli, and the relations between the rate of change of moduli and deflections are used in the self-iterative procedure to ensure accuracy of moduli. The developed computer program of this procedure is verified through various numerical model tests.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to explore and describe the disease experience of Korean women with eating disorders within psychological and sociocultural context. Methods: The participants were 12 young adult women suffering with eating disorders or have recovered from the diseases. Data were collected via in-depth interviews and analyzed according to the grounded theory methodology by Strauss and Corbin. Results: The core category of the disease experience was 'becoming the master of life through desperate efforts'. The disease experience was categorized into five different phases including 'falling under the influence of others', 'collapsing the self: life swallowed by loosening weight', 'facing the wrecked self', 'struggling between the self and others', 'truly facing the self'. The intervening conditions were various supporting systems such as 'support from family', 'economic support' and 'support from trustworthy health professionals'. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that it is necessary to develop nursing interventions to support women with eating disorders and alleviate their suffering from eating disorders. Also specialized educational programs are warranted to prevent the eating disorders, and to reduce social stigma of eating disorders.

  • Microwave heating and drying processes have been well established in various industrial applications. Feasibilities of successful application of microwave drying to many material have been shown on the laboratory or pilot-plant scale. The microwave drying behavior of plating sludge are considered in this paper. The plating sludge containing 70%, 80% and 90% water exposed to microwave power at 2,450 MHz, 700W. An experimental microwave drying apparatus was designed and constructed to monitor weight loss during drying. By studying the drying characteristic curve, the moisture in sludge was almost classified into two categories : free moisture and intestinal moisture. And the critical moisture contents at which the drying rate ceases to be constant were from 10.1 to 10.5%. A simple drying model is proposed which may be used to describe drying behavior of plating sludge. The constant rate and the falling rate periods in microwave drying were addressed separately. From the eqation of constant rate period the drying rate constants decreased exponentially with increasing depth. Microwave heating compared with conventional heating offered higher heating rates from 9 to 16 times. Therefore, microwave drying process can be effective in removing moisture from plating sludge.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the workability, strengths and durability of polymer concrete using oyster shell that are reclaimed at public shore illegally or leaved on the surroundings of shore to prevent the environmental pollution. We investigated the effect of oyster shell powder (OSP) and $CaCO_3$. on the slump, compressive strength, flexural strength, acid sulfuric and freezing and thawing resistance as a filler of polymer concrete. Modified OSP obtained by crushing oyster shell (less than 0.15 mm size) consists of 60.47 wt% of $SiO_2$ and 39.5 wt% of $CaCO_3$. As a result of slump test by OSP and $CaCO_3$. contents, it is found that slump of specimen used OSP is lower than that used $CaCO_3$. and the more OSP contents are, its slump is increased. Compressive and flexural strength of polymer concrete using OSP are similar or slightly lower than that using $CaCO_3$. In acid sulfuric test for 5 % $H_2SO_4$ and freezing thawing test, regardless of kinds of fillers and contents are not found fatal defects in weight change, falling-off in surface and durability factor.

  • Although various fast and simple, testing devices have been developed in many countries such as the U.S, Japan, and European countries, these testing devices are not commonly used in Korea. In this study, compaction fur the field density test was carried out with a hand-guided vibrating roller. The results of the field density test were compared with those of the new testing devices such as the geogauge, soil impact hammer(CASPFOL), light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD), dynamic cone penetration(DCP). Regression analyses were conducted with the data from new testing devices. The analysis results showed that the correlation coefficients were high in the range of $70{\sim}95%$.

  • A wood-plastic composite (WPC) paver block was manufactured using wood chips waste through an extrusion process, and it was intended to be used for paving in basic rest areas. The first stage in this study covered preliminary tests in terms of flexural strength and dimensional swelling to determine the optimal WPC compounding mix condition, by variation of the WPC ingredients. Next, three different paver blocks including the WPC block, a non-porous cement block, and a porous cement block were tested in terms of various material properties in the laboratory. Finally, two outdoor test sections of the proposed paver blocks were prepared to simulate a basic rest area. Test results indicated that the flexural strength of the WPC paver blocks was about 1.6 times greater than that of the tested cement paver blocks. The WPC block pavement was unaffected by water buoyance as well as volume expansion due to swelling. Results from the impact absorbance test and light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) test clearly showed that the WPC block paving system marginally satisfied the comfortable and safe hardness range from the pedestrians' perspective, while the results demonstrated that it is structurally sound for application as a road paving block.

  • The present paper has been carried out to understand the effects of impact loading on the rock tunnels, constructed in different region corresponding to varying unconfined compressive strength (UCS), through finite element method. The UCS of rockmass has substantial role in the stability of rock tunnels under impact loading condition due to falling rocks or other objects. In the present study, Dolomite, Shale, Sandstone, Granite, Basalt, and Quartzite rocks have been taken into consideration for understanding of the effect of UCS that vary from 2.85 MPa to 207.03 MPa. The Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model has been considered in the present study for the nonlinear elastoplastic analysis for all the rocks surrounding the tunnel opening. The geometry and boundary conditions of the model remains constant throughout the analysis and missile has 100 kg of weight. The general hard contact has been assigned to incorporate the interaction between different parts of the model. The present study focuses on studying the deformations in the rock tunnel caused by impacting load due to missile for tunnels having different concrete grade, and steel grade. The broader range of rock strength depicts the strong relationship between the UCS of rock and the extent of damage produced under different impact loading conditions. The energy released during an impact loading simulation shows the variation of safety and serviceability of the rock tunnel.
