  • In recent years, finite strain consolidation theories including a mechanical nonlinearity and a reasonable coordinate system have been proposed and used in educations and practical consolidation problems. However, despite their reasonable ability to predict the consolidation behavior, their failure in the field can be attributed to the complexity of estimating and selecting proper parameters for simulating the consolidation phenomenon. In this study, therefore, the application of a piecewise-linear method was proposed to solve such problems including the assumption of the uniqueness in compressibility. Especially, the concept of reference curve was introduced to define the effect of strain rate dependency of clay. The applicability of the methodology is verified by several tests. It was found that the proposed method is applicable in restrictive ranges of study carried out in the laboratory. Finally it is expected that the verification in field consolidation problem has to be carried out through future study.

  • Interfacial properties and microfailure degradation mechanisms of the bioabsorbable composites fur implant materials were investigated using micromechanical technique and nondestructive acoustic emission (AE). As hydrolysis time increased, the tensile strength, the modulus and the elongation of poly(ester-amide) (PEA) and bioactive glass fibers decreased, whereas these of chitosan fiber almost did not change. Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between bioactive glass fiber and poly-L-lactide (PLLA) was much higher than PEA or chitosan fiber/PLLA systems using dual matrix composite (DMC) specimen. The decreasing rate of IFSS was the fastest in bioactive glass fiber/PLLA composites whereas that of chitosan fiber/PLLA composites was the slowest. AE amplitude and AE energy of PEA fiber decreased gradually, and their distributions became narrower than those in the initial state with hydrolysis time. In case of bioactive glass fiber, AE amplitude and AE energy in tensile failure were much higher than in compression. In addition, AE parameters at the initial state were much higher than those after degradation under both tensile and compressive tests. In this work, interfacial properties and microfailure degradation mechanisms can be important factors to control bioabsorbable composite performance.

  • Tool condition monitoring (TCM) is crucial for improvement of productivity in manufacturing process. However, TCM techniques have not been applied to monitor tool failure in an industrial gear shaving application. Therefore, this work studied a statistical TCM method for monitoring gear shaving tool condition. The method modeled the vibration signal of the shaving process using beta probability distribution in order to extract the effective features for TCM. Modeling includes rectifying for converting a bi-modal distribution into a unimodal distribution, estimating the parameters of beta probability distribution based on method of moments. The performance of features obtained from the proposed method was evaluated and discussed.

  • In this paper, the structural optimum design method of composite rotor blade cross-section was investigated with the genetic algorithm. An auto-mesh generation program was developed for iterative calculations of optimum design, and stresses in the blade cross-section were analyzed by VABS (variational asymptotic beam sectional analysis) program. Minimum mass of rotor blade was defined as an object function, and stress failure index, center mass and blade minimum mass per unit length were chosen as constraints. Finally, design parameters such as the thickness and layup angles of a skin, and the thickness, position and width of a torsion box were determined through the structural optimum design method of composite rotor blade cross-section presented in this paper.

  • It researched several jointing-methods of frame consisting of a concrete-filled steel tubular column and H-shaped beam. These beam-to-column connections is parameters to following: columns of square shape pipe infilled with or without concrete, joints assembled two types of diaphragm, outside-type and through-type. And it is testing that cyclically lateral loadings used hydraulic ram. In testing. we'll be on purposed to estimate the hysteretic behavior, strength and stiffness, energy absorption capacity, deformation capacity and failure configuration of each specimen. It is concluded that the frame specimens with outside-type are more stable and exhibit more energy absorption capacity compared with the through-type, in column of filled with concrete.

  • Plant growth-promoting effects of rhizobacterial inoculation obtained in pot experiments cannot always be dependably reproduced in fields. In this study, we investigated the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and Methylobacterium oryzae, which have displayed growth promoting effects in several pot experiments, on growth and fruit yield of red pepper under field condition in a plastic-film house. Four rows spaced 90 cm apart were prepared after application of compost ($10Mg\;ha^{-1}$), and red pepper seedlings (Capsicum annum L., Nocgwang) were transplanted in each row with 40-cm space. Experimental treatments were consisted of A. brasilense CW903 inoculation, M. oryzae CBMB20 inoculation, and uninoculated control. Twelve plots, 10 plants per plot, were allotted to the three treatments with four replicates in a completely randomized design. At the time of transplanting, 50 mL of each inoculum ($1{\times}10^8cells\;mL^{-1}$) was introduced into root zone soil of each plant, and re-inoculated at 7 and 14 days after transplant. Plant growth and fruit yield were measured during the experiment. Both A. brasilense CW903 and M. oryzae CBMB20 could not promote growth of red pepper plants. All growth parameters measured were not significantly different among treatments. There were large variations in fruit yield recorded on plot basis, and no statistically significant differences were found among treatments. The failure to demonstrate the expected plant growth promoting effect of the inoculants is possibly due to various environmental factors, including weather and soil characteristics, reducing the possibility to express the potential of the inoculated bacterial strains.

  • In this paper, it is proposed to produce high precision screws with a diameter of $800{\mu}m$ and a thread pitch of $200{\mu}m$ ($M0.8{\times}P0.2$) by means of a cold thread rolling process. In this part II of the study, the focus is on the production and reliability testing of the prototype $M0.8{\times}P0.2$ micro-screw. Designs for two flat dies were developed with the aid of the literature and previous studies. Process parameters during the cold thread rolling process were established through FE simulations. The simulation results showed that the threads of the micro-screw are completely formed through the rolling process. Prototype $M0.8{\times}P0.2$ micro-screw were fabricated with a high precision thread rolling machine. In order to verify the simulation results, the deformed shape and dimensions obtained from the experiment were compared with those from the simulations. Hardness and failure torque of the fabricated micro-screw were also measured. The values obtained indicate that the CAE based process design used in this paper is very appropriate for the thread rolling of micro-sized screws.

  • This paper presents a comprehensive and successful application of data mining methodologies to improve and predict wafer yield in a semiconductor wafer fabrication system. As the wafer fabrication process is getting more complex and the volume of technological data gathered continues to be vast, it is difficult to analyze the cause of yield deterioration effectively by means of statistical or heuristic approaches. To begin with this paper applies a clustering method to automatically identify AUF (Area Uniform Failure) phenomenon from data instead of naked eye that bad chips occurs in a specific area of wafer. Next, sequential pattern analysis and classification methods are applied to and out machines and parameters that are cause of low yield, respectively. Furthermore, radial bases function method is used to predict yield of wafers that are in process. Finally, this paper demonstrates an information system, Y2R-PLUS (Yield Rapid Ramp-up, Prediction, analysis & Up Support), that is developed in order to analyze and predict wafer yield in a korea semiconductor manufacturer.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze dynamic behaviors of the oil film thickness and engine bearings in both aligned and misaligned operation conditions of a crankshaft using computer simulation techniques. A crankshaft as an elastic body is modeled for a misaligned crankshaft which is very important design parameter of the film thickness and engine bearings. In this analysis, a dynamic characteristic of a minimum oil film is analyzed based on the elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. The boundary conditions for analyzing the film behaviors include non-linear constraint forces and bending moments in engine bearings. The more expedient model of an engine bearing is extended to consider the effect of crankshaft misalignment. The computed results indicate that the minimum oil film thickness that causes a major influence on the performance of engine bearings has showed a decrease of 16% to 24% for the misaligned crankshaft compared with an aligned crankshaft. The computed results show that the misalignment of a crankshaft inevitably brings the reduction of minimum oil film thickness and this may increase the failure of a bearing. These results as design parameters are very useful for a bearing designer as a firm reference data of an automotive engine.

  • Various geosynthetics used as liners or protection layers are installed in the solid waste landfills. The interface shear strength between geosynthetics installed at the slope of the landfill is a very important variable for the safe design of the bottom and cover systems in the solid waste landfills. The interface shear strength between Geomembrane and Geotexile is estimated by a large direct shear test in this study, The effects of normal stress, water existing between geosynthetics and surface condition of Geomembrae, i.e. smooth or textured, were investigated. The test results show that the effect varied depending on the level of normal stress and the type of geosynthetic combinations. The shear strength was evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion in this research. The shear strength parameters obtained from tests considering the site specific conditions such as normal stress, dry or wet, and surface condition of geosynthetic should be applied to the design of geosynthetics installed at the slope of the landfill to construct a safe solid waste landfill.
