A Bayesian Approach to Replacement Policy with Extended Warranty (연장된 보증이 있는 교체정책에 대한 베이지안 접근)

  • This paper reports a manner to use a Bayesian approach to derive the optimal replacement policy. In order to produce a system with minimal repair warranty, a replacement model with the extended warranty is considered. Within the warranty period, the failed system is minimally repaired by the manufacturer at no cost to the end-user. The failure time is assumed to follow a Weibull distribution with unknown parameters. The expected cost rate per unit time, from the end-user's viewpoints, is induced by the Bayesian approach, and the optimal replacement policy to minimize the cost rate is proposed. Finally, a numerical example illustrating to derive the optimal replacement policy based on the Bayesian approach is described.

  • This study examines apparel brand extensions in terms of types and leverage effects. The researchers identified types of apparel brand extensions based on recent data gathered from the Korean apparel market. Three hundred forty eight Korean female subjects in their 20's evaluated three hypothetically extended brands from a major casual brand which actually exists in the Korean market. Major findings of the study follow. First, apparel brands are extended to different product categories by adjusting mostly target profiles as well as product usage, product class, and distribution channel. Secondly, leverage effects, the extent of image transfer from the parent brand to extended brands, are different according to the extension types.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on structural behavior of hammer head pier cap beams, extended on verges and reinforced with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. A 3-D finite element (FE) model along with a simplified analytical model are presented. Concrete damage plasticity (CDP) was adapted in the FE model and an analytical approach predicting the CFRP anchor strength was adapted in both FE and analytical model. Total five quarter-scaled pier cap beams with various CFRP reinforcing schemes were experimentally tested and analyzed with numerical approaches. Comparison between experimental results, FE results, analytical results and current ACI guideline predictions was presented. The FE results showed good agreement with experimental results in terms of failure mode, ultimate capacity, load-displacement response and strain distribution. In addition, the proposed strut-and-tie based analytical model provides the most accurate prediction of ultimate strength of extended cap beams among the three numerical approaches.

  • In a target tracking problem, the radar glint noise has non-Gaussian heavy-tailed distribution and will seriously affect the target tracking performance. In this study, an extended robust $H_{\infty}$ was developed which can significantly improve the tracking performance when glint noise is present. Through the computer simulations, the proposed filter showed superior and robust tracking performance compared with other extended Kalman filters.

  • Many researches have been carried out on carbonation, a representative deterioration in underground structure. The carbonation of RC (Reinforced Concrete) structure can cause steel corrosion through pH drop in concrete pore water. However extension of service life in RC structures can be obtained through simple surface protection. Unlike the conventional deterministic maintenance technique, probabilistic technique can consider a variation of service life but it deals with only normal distributions. In the work, life time-probability distributions considering not only normal but also log distributions are induced, and repair cost estimation technique is proposed based on the induced model. The proposed technique can evaluate the repair cost through probabilistic manner regardless of normal or log distribution from initial service life and extended service life with repair. When the extended service life through repair has log distribution, repair cost is effectively reduced. The more reasonable maintenance strategy can be set up though actual determination of life-probability distribution based on long term tests and field investigations.

Test of extended thick-walled through-diaphragm connection to thick-walled CFT column

  • The strength and stiffness of the steel beams to concrete-filled tubular columns connections are significantly reduced if the thick-walled components are used. However, the thick-walled tubes used for columns can largely reduce the demand for space and increase the strength-to-weight ratio. This paper describes the cyclic performance of extended through-diaphragm connections between steel beams and thick-walled concrete-filled tubular columns improved with fillets around the diaphragm corners. Test on one full-scale connection was conducted to assess the seismic behavior of the connection in terms of strength, stiffness, ductility, deformation, energy dissipation, and strain distribution. It is shown that the fillets and extended through-diaphragm can alleviate the stress concentration in the connection and thus improve the seismic performance. The test results demonstrate that the through-diaphragm connections with thick-walled concrete-filled tubular columns can offer sufficient energy dissipation capacity and ductility appropriate for its potential application in seismic design.

  • A technique which has been used for the evaluation of certain kinds of multiple integrals, viz., the technique of imcomplete gamma function operators, is employed and extended to the case where the parameters and arguments are non-equal and non-integer for the probability integral of the inverted Dirichlet distribution. Several types of recurrence formulas have been developed for the tail probabilities and a subset selection procedure in ranking variances is discussed as an application.

Discovery of the Extraplanar FUV Halo of NGC 891

  • We report the extended far-ultraviolet (FUV) halo of NGC 891 above the galactic plane. The FUV intensity distribution is well described by two exponential components, one with the scale height of ~0.34 kpc and the other of ~2.3 kpc. The extraplanar FUV halo is traceable up to > 5 kpc. The FUV halo is attributable to scattered-off starlight by extraplanar dust. Using Monte-Carlo radiative transfer simulations, the FUV intensity distribution along the minor axis is found to be well modeled with two dust comonents. Its implications are discussed.

  • This paper shows the model of a consecutive-k-out-of-n :G system with common-cause outages. The objective is to analytically derive the mean operating time between failures for a non-repairable component system. The average failure time of a system and the system availability are also considered. Then, the model is extended to a system with repairable components and unrestricted repair, in which service times are exponentially distributed.

  • Computation of three dimensional dose distribution using CT image and RT plan was applied to a case of pituitary adenoma. Algorithm was based on two dimensional Tissue Maximun Ratio model extended to the third dimension. The resulting isodose curve of transeverse, coronal and sagittal section was demonstrated. This RT plan allows computation of dose distribution in any arbitarily defined plane in addition to conventional cross sectional view.
