Penalty technique perhaps is the most common technique used in the genetic algorithms for constrained optimization problems. In recent years, several techniques have been proposed in the area of evolutionary computation. However, there is no general guideline on designing penalty function and constructing an efficient penalty function is quite problem-dependent. The purpose of the paper is to give a tutorial survey of recent works on penalty techniques used in genetic algorithms and to give a better classification on exisitng works, which may be helpful for revealing the intrinsic relationship among them and for providing some hints for further studies on penalty techniques.
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), synthesized in the hypothalamus, plays a pivotal role in the regulation of vertebrate reproduction. Since molecular isoforms of GnRH and their receptors (GnRHR) have been isolated in a broad range of vertebrate species, GnRH and GnRHR provide an excellent model for understanding the molecular co-evolution of a peptide ligand-receptor pair. Vertebrate species possess multiple forms of GnRH, which have been created through evolutionary mechanisms such as gene/chromosome duplication, gene deletion and modification. Similar to GnRHs, GnRH receptors (GnRHR) have also been diversified evolutionarily. Comparative ligand-receptor interaction studies for non-mammalian and mammalian GnRHRs combined with mutational mapping studies of GnRHRs have aided the identification of domains or motifs responsible for ligand binding and receptor activation. Here we discuss the molecular basis of GnRH-GnRHR co-evolution, particularly the structure-function relationship regarding ligand selectivity and signal transduction of mammalian and non-mammalian GnRHRs.
Proteins in DNAJ/K families are ubiquitous, from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, and function as molecular chaperones. For systematic phylogenomics of the DNAJ/K families, we developed the Eukaryotic DNAJ/K Database (EDD). A total of 12,908 DNAJs and 4,886 DNAKs were identified from 339 eukaryotic genomes in the EDD. Kingdom-wide comparison of DNAJ/K families provides new insights on the evolutionary relationship within these families. Empowered by 'class', 'cluster', and 'taxonomy' browsers and the 'favorite' function, the EDD provides a versatile platform for comparative genomic analyses of DNAJ/K families.

DOPA decarboxylase (DDC), which converts DOPA to dopamine, is important for many biological event such as cuticular melanization, sclerotization and neurotransmission in insects. Recently, it has been also shown that DDC activity is correlated with pupal diapause in M. brassicae. The silkworm, Bombyx mori is a typical insect diapausing at early embryonic stage. (omitted)

Partial sequence comparisons of mitochondrial small subunit rDNA (mt SSU rDNA) were used to examine taxonomic and evolutionary relationships among seven Penicillium species : two monoverticillate species, two biverticillate species, and three terverticillate species. Amplified fragments of mt SSU rDNA highly varied among seven species in size, suggesting the existence of multiple insertions or deletions in the region. A phylogengtic tree was constructed by exhaustive search of parsimony analysis. The phylogenetic tree distinguished two statistically supported monophyletic groups, one for two monoverticillate species and the other for three terverticillate species and ont biverticillate species, P. vulpinum. The phylogenetic relationship of P. waksmanii, the biverticillate species, was not clear.

This paper is to illuminate the dynamic relationship between the technological learning mechanism and international political intervention. Besides conventional techno-economic factors, international political factors are emphasized as external factors in the technological learning mechanism. Being influenced by international political intervention, the evolutionary path of technological capabilities is not incrementally cumulated and organizational process is not autonomously performed, either. In order to mitigate the impact of the international political intervention, DCs make efforts to develop technological capabilities step-by-step in line with current and future civilian industrial demand.

The phylogenetic study of Penicilium chrysogenum was performed based on amino acid sequence comparison of chitin synthase. Phylogenetic trees were constructed with the deduced amino acid sequences of the highly conserved region of chitin synthease gene fragments amplified by PCR. The BlasP similarity searcch and the bootstrap analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences of chitin synthase from P. chrysogenum with those form other fungi showed a close evolutionary relationship of Penicillium to ascomycetous fungi, especially to genus Aspergilus. The result from bootstrap analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences of the Class II chitin synthase from ascomyceteous fungi supported the usefulness of the Class II chitin synthease for phylogenetic study of filamentous fungi.
The sirtuins are a protein family named after the first identified member, S. cerevisiae Sir2p. Sirtuins are protein deacetylases whose activity is dependent on $NAD^+$ as a cosubstrate. They are structurally defined by two central domains that together form a highly conserved catalytic center, which catalyzes the transfer of an acetyl moiety from acetyllysine to $NAD^+$, yielding nicotinamide, the unique metabolite O-acetyl-ADP-ribose and deacetylated lysine. One or more sirtuins are present in virtually all species from bacteria to mammals. Here we describe a phylogenetic analysis of sirtuins. Based on their phylogenetic relationship, sirtuins can be grouped into over a dozen classes and subclasses. Humans, like most vertebrates, have seven sirtuins: SIRT1-SIRT7. These function in diverse cellular pathways, regulating transcriptional repression, aging, metabolism, DNA damage responses and apoptosis. We show that these seven sirtuins arose early during animal evolution. Conserved residues cluster around the catalytic center of known sirtuin family members.
