A numerical methodology is presented in this paper for the geometrically non-linear analysis of slender uni-dimensional structural elements under unilateral contact constraints. The finite element method together with an updated Lagrangian formulation is used to study the structural system. The unilateral constraints are imposed by tensionless supports or foundations. At each load step, in order to obtain the contact regions, the equilibrium equations are linearized and the contact problem is treated directly as a minimisation problem with inequality constraints, resulting in a linear complementarity problem (LCP). After the resulting LCP is solved by Lemke's pivoting algorithm, the contact regions are identified and the Newton-Raphson method is used together with path following methods to obtain the new contact forces and equilibrium configurations. The proposed methodology is illustrated by two examples and the results are compared with numerical and experimental results found in literature.

Motions of animals and gymnasts in the air as well as free flying space robots without thruster are subject to nonholonomic constraints generated by the law of conservation of angular momentum. The interest in nonholonomic control problems is motivated by the fact that such systems can not stabilized to its equilibrium points by the smooth control input. The purpose of this paper is to derive analytical posture control laws for free flying objects in the air. We propose a control method using bang-bang control for trajectory planning of a 3 link mechanical system with initial angular momentum. We reduce the DOF (degrees of freedom) of control object in the first control phase and determine the control inputs to steer the reduced order system from its initial position to its desired position. Computer simulation for a motion planning of an athlete approximated by 3 link is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the Proposed control scheme.
In experiment, a real inverted pendulum system has state constraints and limited amplitude of input. These problems make it difficult to design a swing-up controller. To overcome these problems, we design a sliding mode controller considering physical behaviour of the inverted pendulum system. This sliding mode controller uses a switching control action to converge along a specified path derived from energy equation from a state around the path to desired states(standing position). And optimal control method is used to guarantee stability at unstable equilibrium position. The designed controller can be applied to all inverted pendulum systems regardless of the values of their parameters. Compared with previous existing controllers, it is simple and easy to tune. Experimental results are given to show the effectiveness of this controller.
This paper is mainly forcused on the application of modal analysis In analyze the geometrically non-linear buckling behaviors of large span spatial structures, and the evaluation of each eigen mode affected post-buckling behaviors and buckling loads. Modal analysis is applied . to derivation of the system matrices transforming actual displacement space into generalized coordinates space represented by coefficients multiplied in the linear combination of eigen modes which are independent and orthogonal each other. By using modal analysis method, it will be expected to save the calculating time by computer extremely. For example, we can obtain the satisfactorily good results by using about 7% of total eigen modes only in case of single layer latticed dome. And we can decrease the possibility of divergence on the bifurcation point in the calculation of post-buckling path. Arc-length method and Newton-Raphson iteration method are used to calculate the nonlinear equilibrium path.
The primary objective of this paper is to grasp many characteristics of buckling behavior of latticed spherical domes under various conditions. The Arc-Length Method proposed by E.Riks is used for the computation and evaluation of geometrically nonlinear fundamental equilibrium paths and bifurcation points. And the direction of the path after the bifurcation point is decided by means of Hosono's concept. Three different nonlinear stiffness matrices of the Slope-Deflection Method are derived for the system with rigid nodes and results of the numerical analysis are examined in regard in geometrical parameters such as slenderness ratio, half-open angle, boundary conditions, and various loading types. But in case of analytical model 2 (rigid node), the post-buckling path could not be surveyed because of Newton-Raphson iteration process being diversed on the critical point since many eigenvalues become zero simultaneously.
Nonlinear equations of structures are generally solved numerically by the iterative solution of linear equations. However, this iterative procedure diverges when the tangent stiffness is ill-conditioned which occurs near limit points. In other words, a major challenge with simple iterative methods is failure caused by a singular or near singular Jacobian matrix. In this paper, using the Newton-Raphson algorithm based on Davidenko's equations, the iterations can traverse the limit point without difficulty. It is argued that the propose algorithm may be both more computationally efficient and more robust compared to the other algorithm when tracing path through severe nonlinearities such as those associated with structural collapse. Two frames are analyzed using the proposed algorithm and the results are compared with the previous methods. The ability of the proposed method, particularly for tracing the limit points, is demonstrated by those numerical examples.
In this paper, the question whether the curvature of the minimum energy path can affect the dynamic threshold was tested using the boundary trajectory method developed by Chesnavich and coworkers. For nonreactive system, the MO EXP model potential surface was used with modified equilibrium distance to control the curvature. The results showed that there is no relation between the curvature and the dynamic threshold. In order to study the reactive system, a generalization of the boundary trajectory method was achieved to apply on the nonsymmetric system. We have found no correspondence between the curvature and the dynamic threshold of the system. It was also shown that the fate of the trajectories strongly depends on the shape of potential surface around the turning points along the symmetric stretch line.
Various mechanistic aspects of the A2 hydrolysis of methyl acetimidate were explored using the MNDO method. As in thecorresponding reactions of acetamide and methyl carbamate, a proton transfer pre-equilibrium exists between the N-protonated and the O-protonated tautomers, and the subsequent hydrolysis proceeds from the more stable N-protonated form. Of the two reaction pathways, the $A_{AL}2$ path is favored in the gas phase and in concentrated acid solutions, whereas the $A_{AC}2$ path is favored in less acidic solutions with a stable cationic tetrahedral intermediate formed in the rate determining step. Negative charge development on the alkoxy oxygen in the transition state suggested a rate increase with the increase in the electron withdrawing power of the alkoxy group. Calculations on the reaction processes with AM1 indicated that MNDO is more reliable in this type of work, although AM1 is better than MNDO in reproducing hydrogen bonds.
The bucking and postbuckling behavior of composite laminated long cylinders under lateral pressure are investigated by the nonlinear finite element method. A long cylinder of 3-D shell problem is modelled as 2-D plane strain problem for analysis. And for the finite element analysis, eight nodes quadratic element is utilized. Arc-length method is adopted for the iteration and load-increment along postbuckling equilibrium path. The composite laminated cylinders in study are composed of cross-plied uniaxially reinforced shells. As a prsult, buckling load and postbuckling behavior are discussed.
This paper deals with the torsional buckling behavior of plain weave GFRP composite cylindrical shells having comparatively small length-to-diameter ratio. Boundary conditions corresponding to clamped ends and simply supported ends are considered. Torsional buckling loads and circumferential mode numbers according to the variation of shell length-to-radius ratio are conformed. To verify the availability of the theoretical results, comparison with the theoretical and experimental results are made.
