  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, unielement thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two principal design parameters. a swirl angle and a recess length, have been investigated through hot firing tests for the understanding of their effects on high pressure combustion. Clearly, both parameters considerably affect the combustion efficiency, dynamics and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in a recess region increases combustion efficiency along with the increase of a pressure drop required for flowing the same amount of mass flow rates. It is concluded that pressure buildup due to flame can be released by the increase of LOx flow axial momentum or the reduction of a recess length. Dynamic pressure measurements of the thrust chamber show varied dynamic behaviors depending on injector configurations.

  • This paper is to introduce Hanwha Aerospace R&D Center's development status of TVC(Thrust Vector Control) system and control valves for Korean space launch vehicles. With the successful development of KSR-III TVC system, Hanwha have developed TVC system and RCS control valves for KSLV-I. Also, in the advance research area of KSLV-II, Hanwha have participated in LOx and fuel flow control valves and LOx shut-off valve development in the engine supply system. Based on the accumulated experiences and technologies in the aerospace key components and system development, Hanwha will make an important contribution to KSLV-II development in the future.

  • Clearance movements of engine piston are regarded very important because they cause impact vibrations as well as many tribological problems. Some of the major parameters that influence these kinds of performances are piston profiles, piston offsets and clearance magnitudes. In our study. computational investigation is performed about the piston movements in the clearance between piston and cylinder liner by changing the skirt profiles and piston offsets. Our results show that curved profile and more offset to thrust side have better performance with low side impact during the engine cycle.

  • Hot test of a full-scale turbopump for a 30-ton-thrust liquid rocket engine was carried out. The turbopump is composed of an oxidizer pump, a fuel pump, and a turbine on a single shaft. Model fluid was used in the test, that is, hot air for the turbine and water for the pumps. The turbopump was operated stably at full speed for 120 seconds. In terms of performance characteristics of pumps and turbine, the results from the turbopump assembly test are compared with those from the turbopump component tests which were performed at about half of the design rotational speed.

  • Vibration problem of deckhouse structure in a container vessel was investigated through the analysis and measurement. The natural frequency of deckhouse structure was found to be resonant with main engine 4th order excitations in the operating range, major sources of which were main engine inertial moment and axial thrust of the propulsion shafting system. To investigate and solve the problem, exciter test was performed to identify the vibration chracteristics of the ship structure and mechanical balancer was installed to compensate the 4th order inertial moment. Measurement results under the conditions with and without balancer operating were compared and analyzed to confirm the balancer effect. Good coincidence was found between the measurement and analysis results, which made it possible to predict the vibration problem in the earlier design stage.

  • A computational analysis has been conducted on the compressible flow in the turbine exhaust nozzle of the gas generator cycle liquid rocket engine. The commercial CFD code Fluent has been used. Four nozzle designs have been compared to select the turbine exhaust nozzle concept. Three candidates with single nozzle have comparable performance. The model with bifurcated nozzles shows significant performance loss. However it will be better in the view of balanced thrust distribution because of its symmetric geometry.

  • Experiments on film cooling were performed with a small scale rocket engine homing liquid oxygen (LOx) and Jet A-1(jet engine fuel). Film coolants(Jet A-1 and water) were injected through the film cooling injector. Film cooled length and the outside wall temperature of the combustor were determined for chamber pressure, and the different geometries(injection angle) with the flow rates of film coolant. The loss of characteristic velocity due to film cooling was determined for the case of film cooling with water and Jet A-1. As the coolant flow increases, the outside wall temperatures decrease but the decrease in the outside wall temperatures reduced over the 8 percent film coolant flow rate. The efficiency of characteristic velocity was decreased with the Increase of the film coolant flow rate.

  • In this study, forced vibrations analysis was performed for main wing of small scale WIG vehicle which is equipped two-stroke pusher type propeller engine, in terms of structural. for the frequency response analysis, excitations were assumed by H-mode(Horizontal mode), X-mode(Twisted mode) which is main vibration mode of engine, and for the transient response analysis, excitations were assumed by L-mode(Longitudinal mode) with propeller thrust which is occurred when it revolution.

  • The ongoing developmental studies on the application of hydrogen peroxide for propulsion are briefly reviewed. A detailed design-study of a laboratory scale facility of a hydrogen peroxide mono-propellant engine of 100-N thrust is presented. For the preparation of concentrated hydrogen peroxide, a distillation facility has been realized. Results of water analogy tests are presented. Initial firings using the concentrated hydrogen peroxide were not successful. Low environmental temperature, low contact area of the catalyst pack, and contamination in the hydrogen peroxide were considered to be the reasons. Addressing the first two points resulted in successful firing of the rocket engine.

  • The colse type of engine system, in which the combustion gas after the gas-turbine with high temperature is supplied to the combustion chamber, was selected to increase the energy characteristics in making the rocket engine scheme which makes 1700kN thrust. The nozzle was designed with consideration of film cooling, nozzle efficiency, and the real state of cobmustion gas during the expansion in nozzle. The change of gas state and the composition of the gas through the nozzle was studied by the graphic, too.
