  • A stepped beam with immovable ends under the free and forced vibrations with large amplitude is investigated by using the finite element method to show the effects of longitudinal displacement, shear deformation and rotary inertia. A modified harmonic force matrix is introduced for analysis of finite amplitude vibration of the stepped beam under uniform harmonic loading and a beam under nonuniform harmonic loading. Numerical examples are analysed for deflections and natural frequencies of stepped beam under various support conditions. Results show that the proposed method is valid and efficient.

  • Zero-crossings with Peak amplitudes (ZCPA) model motivated by human auditory periphery was proposed to extract reliable features form speech signals even in noisy environments for robust speech recognition. In this paper, the performance of the ZCPA model is further improved by incorporating conventional speech processing techniques into the model output. Spectral and cepstral representations of the ZCPA model output are compared, and the incorporation of dynamic features with several different lengths of time-derivative window are evaluated. Also, comparative evaluations with other front-ends in real-world noisy environments are performed, and result in the superiority of the ZCPA model.

  • In this paper, the tension-compression fatigue test method and the fatigue life characteristics of carbon fabric/epoxy laminate coupon are presented. To avoid the buckling during the compression, a proper design for the test coupons is essential. The critical buckling loads for the coupons are calculated by assuming the coupons as columns under two types of fixed conditions. The first is that both ends of each coupon are perfectly clamped, the second is that both ends of each coupon are simply supported. The strain-load curves are obtained by compressing the representative coupons, on each surface of which a strain gage is attached. The buckling loads obtained from the tests are all between the two calculated critical buckling loads. All the coupons are broken by the compression during the fatigue tests. It is estimated to be the reason that the fatigue load causes delamination before the eventual failure of each coupon, and sequentially the micro-buckling in the delaminated region drives each coupon into fatigue failure during the compression. The S-N curve, the fatigue life characteristics of carbon fabric/epoxy is obtained.

  • An experimental study was carried out for hybrid steel beams with reinforced concrete ends. The purpose is to examine the shear strength and to develop the design methodology of the RC-S connection region. Tested were four beams which included a reference beam and three beams with various parameters. The reference beam was used to make a comparison with remaining specimens. The test parameters were focused mostly on the concentrated shear reinforcements. The ratio of concentrated shear reinforcements and their types were investigated in this study.

  • Tencel is a high quality cellulosic fiber, which is controlled and processed by an environmentally sound route. But, the point about tencel and the reason why it achieves its unique touch in its finished state is that it is a fibrillating fiber. That means it can take a great deal of punishment during the finishing process, which raise the fiber to produce the characteristics handle, without destroying the cloth. The aim of cellulase treatment is to improve appearence of tencel, plus the fiber ends protruding from the fabric surface. But enzymatic hydrolysis can weakens the fiber ends and changes the properties of fabrics. This study examined about the changes of properties according to several conditions and effect of cellulase to fibril of tencel. The results are as follows. The weight loss was occurred, tensile strength was decreased, softness was increased. And cellulase treatment reduced amount of fibril.

  • In plate rolling, it is desired to reduce the trimming loss by controlling the formation of defective end shapes. For this reason, edge rolling is frequently performed in the plate mill. In this paper, the effect of various process variables on the deformation of plate ends in edge rolling is examined by conducting experiments and finite element computer simulation. A focus is given to investigating the effect of edging on the width of the deformed plate trimming-free plate rolling.

  • The characteristics of longitudinal dispersion enhancement by the flow oscillation are numerically studied according to various groove geometries in a 2-D channel in the present study. The length of expanded section l$_{1}$/h$_{1}$ is varied from 0 to 8.75. The oscillating flow condition is given at both side ends, i.e., u = Asin ($2{\pi}ft$) The non-dimensional temperatures at both side ends are set to zero. The bottom and top walls are adiabatic. The local heat sources are located at the middle of the groove wall. In order to solve the governing equations, the SIMPIER algorithm is employed. The present results indicate that maximum longitudinal thermal dispersion can be achieved when the area ratio of the expanded section to the contracted section in the grooved channel becomes 1.

  • In this paper, the in-plane end vibration of a cylindrical shell has been analyzed. The theoretical result has showed that the strong in-plane vibration at the ends of the cylindrical shell can be generated by the evanescent wave field, which is excited along about half the length of the shell. This has been also observed from experimental result. The evanescent waves are generated due to mode conversion of elastic waves at the ends of the cylindrical shells. The results show that the strong in-plane end vibration can be generated in cylindrical shells.

  • In this study, it is attempted to obtain the optimum size of holes in 15 square plate models where a hole exists on every quadrant of a plate, and to get eigenvalues by performing free vibration analysis far each model. Moreover, the specimen is produced from optimized square plate and eigenvalue of each plate is measured through the shocking load. And then the result is compared with that of finite element analysis. For free vibration analysis of the square plate, the boundary condition of finite element analysis and experiment is assumed as both ends support. From the results of this study, it is known that more stable structures can be designed by changing the natural frequency which is dependent on the location of holes and further studies are considered to be necessary for the basic design information.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic stability analyses of columns with constant volume and both clamped ends. Numerical methods are developed for solving natural frequencies of such column, subjected to an axial compressive load. Differential equation governing free vibration of such column is derived. The numerical methods developed herein for computing natural frequencies are found to be efficient and robust. From the numerical results, the dynamic stability regions of such columns are obtained.
