  • In this study, we classified word problems related to real life presented in elementary mathematics textbooks into five types of context problems(location, story, project, scrap, theme) suggested by Freudenthal(1991), and applied context problems to mathematics class to analyze the influence on students' mathematical belief and attitude. Also, we examined the types of context problems preferred according to academic performance and the reasons of preference within a group experiencing context problems. The results of the study are as follows. First, almost lessons in the mathematics textbook presents word problems related to real life, but the presenting method is inclined to a story type. Also, the problems with a story type are presented fragmentarily. Therefore, although these word problems are familiar to the students, they don't include contextual meanings and cannot induce enough mathematical motives and interests. Second, a lesson using context problems give a positive influence on their mathematics belief and attitude. It is also expected to give a positive influence on students' mathematics learning in the long run. Third, the preferred types of context problems and the reasons of preference are different according to the level of academic performance within the experimental group.

  • This study aims to analyze tile research trends of science education in Korea, and suggest the direction of the desirable research, which is to help the improvement of science education practically. To achieve these aims, the papers related to the science education (paper;1288, master′s thesis;724, doctoral thesis;59), which were published from 1992 to 1996 in Korea, are classified by the criteria for the analysis and summed up. The condensed results of this study are as follows, 1. The papers published through this period, maintains the stability in aspect of quantity compared with 1980s. It is owing to the efforts of the prime investigator so that "the science education," as a part of normal science, may settle down in Korea. 2. In the case of thesis for the academic degree, the doctoral theses are rare, as the ratio of the doctoral vs. the master′s is 1:13. Even so, most of the theses were produced by a few universities(master′s thesis/Kor. Nat. Univ. of Edu.;28.3%, Ewha Woman′ Univ.;16.2%, doctoral thesis/Seoul Nat. Univ.;57.6%, Kor. Nat. Univ. of Edu.;22.0%). 3. Most of papers are preponderant at three categories among the ten categories proposed by this study (science teaching-learning material;23.5%, science teaching methods;21.4%, psychology of science education;21.1%). 4. Concerning the subject of research, these papers are not diversity and intensive, that is; the subject related to scientific concepts, scientific thinking and attitude, and analysis of scientific textbook is 17.7%, 14.3%, and 10.5% of the total, respectively. 5. Though not including this study, among the theses for the master of science education, many of theses are related to the subject of pure science. There are some suggestions related to tile results of this study. The severe preponderance ill the training process, the subject, and area of research, can be pointed out one of the flimsy in our researches of science education. Because these cannot be considered separately, the policy and support of educational administration must be needed to remove this phenomena. To improve the present situation of science education, the research funds have to be given to the practical than the theoretical subjects. Which can make promptly a settlement of tile problems and difficulties from the field of science education, and encourage the reseal,:h activities that tile front teachers take part in. Lately, the accumulation of literature and references are a prior condition in the development of academic knowledge. Therefore the data base system for the information of science education and translation of foreign literature related to science education must be achieved. In addition, the programs that tile teacher and the investigator can make good use of such an information without limited conditions, must be prepared.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mathematical instruction using GSP program on the symmetrical figures learning and self-directed learning attitude. According to the pretest result, the experiment group and the comparison group showed to be homogeneous groups. The experiment group has learned symmetrical figures for 9 hours using the GSP program and the comparison group has learned for 9 hours using the traditional method(paper and pen lesson). As the posttests, self-directed learning attitude test and symmetry figure understanding test were performed. The results obtained in this research are as follows; First, there was a significant difference in symmetry figure understanding test between the experiment group which learned through GSP program and the comparison group which learned through traditional method. Since there showed a very high achievement in the experiment group which learned using GSP, it can be inferred that GSP was very effective in the lessons of symmetrical movements. Second, there was a significant difference in self-directed learning attitude test between the experiment group and the comparison group. This seems to be because the length of the sides of the figures, size of the angles of the figures etc can be verified instantly and the students can correct by themselves and give feedbacks when they use GSP program. Students preferred drawing using the GSP over drawing using rulers and pencils, and they showed interest in the GSP program and they did not have burden in being wrong in their study and studied in various methods. And as they become familiar with the GSP program, they even studied other contents beyond the scope presented in the textbook.

  • The purpose of this study is analysis of to investigate relation proportion problem of mathematics textbooks of 7th curriculum to proportional reasoning(relative thinking, unitizing, partitioning, ratio sense, quantitative and change, rational number) of Lamon's proposal at sixth grade students. For this study, I develop two test papers; one is for proportion problem of mathematics textbooks test paper and the other is for proportional reasoning test paper which is devided in 6 by Lamon. I test it with 2 group of sixth graders who lived in different region. After that I analysis their correlation. The result of this study is following. At proportion problem of mathematics textbooks test, the mean score is 68.7 point and the score of this test is lower than that of another regular tests. The percentage of correct answers is high if the problem can be solved by proportional expression and the expression is in constant proportion. But the percentage of correct answers is low, if it is hard to student to know that the problem can be expressed with proportional expression and the expression is not in constant proportion. At proportion reasoning test, the highest percentage of correct answers is 73.7% at ratio sense province and the lowest percentage of that is 16.2% at quantitative and change province between 6 province. The Pearson correlation analysis shows that proportion problem of mathematics textbooks test and proportion reasoning test has correlation in 5% significance level between them. It means that if a student can solve more proportion problem of mathematics textbooks then he can solve more proportional reasoning problem, and he have same ability in reverse order. In detail, the problem solving ability level difference between students are small if they met similar problem in mathematics text book, and if they didn't met similar problem before then the differences are getting bigger.

  • This study analyzed teachers' Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) regarding the pedagogical aspect of the instruction of ratio and rate in order to look into teachers' problems during the process of teaching ratio and rate. This study aims to clarify problems in teachers' PCK and promote the consideration of the materialization of an effective and practical class in teaching ratio and rate by identifying the improvements based on problems indicated in PCK. We subdivided teachers' PCK into four areas: mathematical content knowledge, teaching method and evaluation knowledge, understanding knowledge about students' learning, and class situation knowledge. The conclusion of this study based on analysis of the results is as follows. First, in the 'mathematical content knowledge' aspect of PCK, teachers need to understand the concept of ratio from the perspective of multiplicative comparison of two quantities, and the concept of rate based on understanding of two quantities that are related proportionally. Also, teachers need to introduce ratio and rate by providing students with real-life context, differentiate ratios from fractions, and teach the usefulness of percentage in real life. Second, in the 'teaching method and evaluation knowledge' aspect of PCK, teachers need to establish teaching goals about the students' comprehension of the concept of ratio and rate and need to operate performance evaluation of the students' understanding of ratio and rate. Also, teachers need to improve their teaching methods such as discovery learning, research study and activity oriented methods. Third, in the 'understanding knowledge about students' learning' aspect of PCK, teachers need to diversify their teaching methods for correcting errors by suggesting activities to explore students' own errors rather than using explanation oriented correction. Also, teachers need to reflect students' affective aspects in mathematics class. Fourth, in the 'class situation knowledge' aspect of PCK, teachers need to supplement textbook activities with independent consciousness and need to diversify the form of class groups according to the character of the activities.

  • This study is aimed to compare the area of geometry of elementary mathematics textbooks in korea and china. Through this study, we would like to suggest some guidelines in order to develop geometric curriculum and textbooks in korea and to search for more efficient methods of learning mathematics. For this, we have looked through the general characteristics of geometry domain in mathematics curriculums and the textbooks in korea and china. Furthermore, we have found the similarities and differences while comparing specific contents in the two countries. The followings are the conclusions of this study. First, The mathematics curriculum in korea is divided into 'figure' domain, but the one in china is divided into 'space and figure' domain, which deals with figure and measurement. And china constructs the contents of the basic figure as a whole unit. Second, korea gives clear learning aims about contents whereas china gives learning activities. Lastly, when starting teaching a plain figure, korea focuses on checking and finding definitions and characters through fundamental figures. However, china focuses on figuring out components and the relations among them throughout various plain figure activities.

  • This study developed an MEA program to which the invention technique was applied and analyzed the conceptual change of students. The MEA activity applying the invention technique (TRIZ) was composed of the topic of making a paper electric circuit in the section 'Using electricity' presented in the 6th grade textbook. As a way to materialize ideas for problem solving, among the TRIZ techniques, division, integration, multi-purpose, overlapping, subtraction, and converse techniques were extracted and applied. The devised program consists of examining invention techniques (1st session), problem-solving (2nd and 3rd sessions), and expressing the problem-solving process (4th session). As a result of applying to 6th grade elementary school students, it was confirmed that the scientific concept of the experimental group participating in the MEA class to which the invention technique was applied was improved compared to the control group participating in the general class. As a result of calculating the scientific concept improvement index, the control group showed a low educational effect of 0.15, and the experimental group showed an intermediate educational effect of 0.69. This study is meaningful in that it suggests a specific way to graft invention education into science subjects.

  • The 2015 revised science curriculum textbook of 6th graders describes 'day and night' as an astronomical phenomenon observed on a daily basis. Textbooks use only visual materials from a space-based perspective to explain the causes of day and night. This study aims to investigate what changes in spatial representations of 5th graders when additional visual materials of the Earth-based perspective were presented to them. It also shows that the Space and the Earth-based perspectives appear to be interconnected. The following are found in this study. First, when students were presented with a visual material of an Earth-based perspective, their spatial representations of both the Earth and the Space-based perspectives changed. Second, the visual material of an Earth-based perspective confirmed the possibility that students' spatial representation types could be different in many ways. Third, the effect on the spatial representation of each perspective is different depending on gender and the level of spatial representation.

  • This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the curricular progression of the concepts and learning sequences of 'lines', specifically, 'line segments', 'straight lines', and 'rays', at the elementary school level. By examining mathematics curricula and textbooks, spanning from 2nd to 7th and 2007, 2009, 2015, and up to 2022 revised version, the study investigates the timing and methods of introducing these essential geometric concepts. It also explores the sequential delivery of instruction and the key focal points of pedagogy. Through the analysis of shifts in the timing and definitions, it becomes evident that these concepts of lines have predominantly been integrated as integral components of two-dimensional plane figures. This includes their role in defining the sides of polygons and the angles formed by lines. This perspective underscores the importance of providing ample opportunities for students to explore these basic geometric entities. Furthermore, the definitions of line segments, straight lines, and rays, their interrelations with points, and the relationships established between different types of lines significantly influence the development of these core concepts. Lastly, the study emphasizes the significance of introducing fundamental mathematical concepts, such as the notion of straight lines as the shortest distance in line segments and the concept of lines extending infinitely (infiniteness) in straight lines and rays. These ideas serve as foundational elements of mathematical thinking, emphasizing the necessity for students to grasp concretely these concepts through visualization and experiences in their daily surroundings. This progression aligns with a shift towards the comprehension of Euclidean geometry. This research suggests a comprehensive reassessment of how line concepts are introduced and taught, with a particular focus on connecting real-life exploratory experiences to the foundational principles of geometry, thereby enhancing the quality of mathematics education.

  • "GukMinSoHakDokBon", published in 1895, is the first national textbook designated by the Education Institute. Ten of the 41 chapters consist of scientific contents. In this thesis, some the contents are reviewed in detail and studied to see what significance it has in view of science education. The scientific contents described in "GukMinSoHakDokBon" include Plants Change, Clock, Camels, Wind, Hive, Respiration, Crocodiles, Nature of Animals, and Chemical Elements. For that kind of diversity, it was told that "GukMinSoHakDokBon" was not considered for normal students, and there were many ambiguities due to in sufficient explanations. Some of the contents were even technically wrong. So it has been noted that the scientific contents of "GukMinSoHakDokBon" have more significance in providing new information at that time but not in understanding newly-organized scientific knowledge. However, it is obvious that the early science education in Korea is composed of the methods of reading "GukMinSoHakDokBon". This is a common figure, which can be found in "Willson's Reader", the elementary reading textbook in the U.S. in the 1860's or "小學讀本" by the Ministry of Education in Japan. One thing remarkable is "GukMinSoHakDokBon" induced students' interests through the use of storytelling method for introducing some unfamiliar scientific knowledge. There is no doubt that "GukMinSoHakDokBon" has a very positive role in increasing students interest and intelligence. These advantages are being actively applied in the present model of storytelling education these days. Therefore, "GukMinSoHakDokBon" can be regarded as both a language textbook and an early figure in science education, and it can be also considered that "GukMinSoHakDokBon" has a significance not only in approaching scientific substances theoretically but in using storytelling methods to deliver unfamiliar and strange knowledges to students.
