  • This paper aims to compare the effects of two teaching methods, the discovery-observational(DO) and the expository-observational(EO) instructions, on students learning interest in the life cycle of fruit fly. The subjects, 463 third-graders from two elementary schools in Changwon City, were divided into two groups, the DO group and the EO group. After the instruction on the life of the flies in two different teaching ways, a questionnaire with 13 items was devised regarding the students' interest, and the subjects were asked to respond to it. The results reveal that the general mean score of the DO group is higher than that of the EO group. Also, the DO group obtains the higher mean score in each item, except two items about knowledge learning. The differences of the mean scores of the two types, general as well as item-individual, between the two groups are statistically significant. This suggests that the class about the life cycle of living creatures easily getatable and observable, such as fruit flies, should be student-centered investigatory one, where students themselves collect them and observe the process of their growth and whole cycle.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the required cognitive levels of the current 6th graders' science textbooks conform to the children's cognitive levels and to examine the students' sensed psychological difficulty of the current science textbooks. The eighty five students (boy: 39, girl: 46) from one elementary school were participated in this study. The results of the study are as follows. First, the 2/3 out of the contents in the six graders' science textbooks require concrete level of operation and the 1/3 out of the contents in the textbooks requires the formal level of operation. So the 70% students at the concrete operational level are likely to undergo difficulties with the 1/3 contents in the textbooks. Second, the students' psychological difficulty on the science textbooks is relatively low (approximately two out of five points) and there is not any special pattern between the cognitive level of the textbooks and the students' psychological difficulty of the textbooks.

  • This study explores the features of sociocultural context of experiment classes taught by a science subject teacher. Two experiment classes on electric circuit for fifth graders were observed and video recorded. The data was also collected through student interviews and teacher interviews. Using the cultural historical activity theory, we extracted the six sociocultural factors and analyzed their interactions. This study could identify that four features of the sociocultural context of the cases. First, the rules of science classes were not decided by the teacher, but formed and modified through the negotiation between the teacher and students or between the students. Second, elementary students played a game, i.e. 'Countdown game', during their electricity experiments, which had both positive and negative influences on science learning. Third, the science teacher feels a limit on life guidance because of the position as a subject teacher in an elementary school. Lastly, although the science teacher had enough time to prepare science classes, there was no guarantee of the improvement of teaching quality. Based on the results of this study, educational implications are discussed in terms of teaching science experiments and of the science subject teacher system.

  • The principal objective of this study was to assess perceptions and preferences of chungkukjang in elementary school children who used a school foodservice. In this investigation, 583 elementary school students(300 boys, 283 girls) in the Seongnam area were surveyed via questionnaire, and the collected data were analyzed using the SAS package. The results demonstrated that 82.0% of students responded that they were aware of chungkukjang. Female students were more aware of chungkulgang than were male students, and children of the nuclear families were more aware of those of the extended family. With regard to the origins of their interest in chungkulgang, 51.8% of the subjects answered 'through home education' and 35.5% learned about chungkukjang 'through mass media'. Most students recognized chungkulgang as a 'healthy food' and a 'Korean traditional food'. Approximately 44% of the students ate chungkukjang in the school foodservice once per month, and 41.7% preferred this menu. Therefore, in order to increase elementary school students' knowledge and intake of chungkulgang, the school should attempt to foster the quality of chungkulgang in nutrition education, to serve chungkukjang frequently in school foodservices, and to develop recipes for tastier chungkukjang foods for children.
