The aims of the study were to analyze the contents of elementary mathematics curriculum in order to help students to have ideas about the history of mathematics and to apply the ideas to develop their knowledge of mathematicians or mathematical history into the lesson ideas for preservice elementary teachers and elementary students. As a result, many ideas of mathematical connection into the history of mathematics are reviewed, and posters about Pythagoras and Pascal are designed to help students to reinvent the idea of triangular numbers and square numbers.
In this paper, we tried to analyze 7 textbooks for liberal mathematics in elementary teacher's colleges in Korea and 3 foreign textbooks (2 American textbooks and 1 Japan textbook) which are believed to be used for pre-service education. We tried also to analyze in 3 lesson plans in homepages of Japan teacher's colleges. Next we tried to grope for syllabus of Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, and we suggested one syllabus. But we think that syllabus as a tentative one. So, it must be criticized by other researchers to be better one.
Students' interest and motivation of a lesson can be deeply influenced by how their teacher starts his or her lesson. So the introduction part of math classes should be very carefully and thoughtfully designed. The goal of this study is to serve the foundation for developing the practical types of introduction part of math classes and to draw the implications for planning and teaching math classes. For these, 19 lesson plans titled by 'volume of cylinders' composed by elementary teachers and 2 lesson videos on the internet are analyzed. Finally, seven types of introduction parts of math class are probed and several implications are suggested.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the strengths and weaknesses resulting from a study of elementary mathematics lessons among in-service teachers and to discuss implications for the direction of improvement of the study on elementary mathematics lessons based on teacher learning community. The results of this study showed that the study on elementary mathematics lessons based on teacher learning community improved teacher knowledge related to teaching mathematics, enhanced teacher's accomplishment and self-esteem, made it possible for participant teachers to teach one another, created atmosphere in which teachers investigated instruction via sustainable and systematic lesson study. However, some limitations were noticed such as regulations by the social norms of the teacher learning community, the influence of an expert teacher, teachers' unprofessional decision making, and lack of systematic evaluation and reflection on lessons. Based on these results, this paper closes with critical implications to enhance teacher learning community.
The purpose of this study is to understand teaching and learning mathematics in elementary school classroom by considering mathematics as a kind of social practices and mathematics classroom as a kind of community of practice. The research questions of this study are as followings: 1) Which kinds of lesson organization reveal? 2) Which kinds of social participation structure reveal? 3) Which processes of making meaning reveal? This study was based on ethnomethodology. It was executed participation observations, interviews and surveys with teacher and 5 graders to collect the data related to the social practices formed their classroom. The social practices of mathematics classroom was analyzed from three aspects such as lesson organization, social participation structure and making meaning. The results from which we analyzed the social practices of the mathematics classroom are as followings. From the aspect of lessons organization, the teacher had a lot of power and authorities in the classroom and used them to elicitate students' responses. From the aspect of social participation structure, five SPSs(social participation structures) which revealed in Jo(1997)'s economics classrooms, were shown in this mathematics classroom, but there were a difference to the situations or frequencies which the SPSs appeared. From the aspect of making meaning, it was common that meanings are formed by the explanation of the teacher, but the teacher didn't deliver the mathematical meanings directly. She tried to interact with students to arrive shared meanings.

This paper analyzed 20 teaching practices of elementary mathematics lessons which were recognized as effective instruction by the local educational offices throughout Korea, using an analytic framework with 4 main domains (i.e., curriculum and content, teaching and learning, classroom environment and atmosphere, and assessment) and a total of 44 sub-elements. The results of this study showed that the lessons focused on the key mathematics concepts according to the national mathematics curriculum and learning objectives, managed students in terms of shared rules within each classroom, and evaluated students' understanding of the concepts at the end of the lesson. However, the lessons did not foster students' calculation skills and only partly used either technology or game. Building on the related studies, this paper included implications of implementing high-quality mathematics instruction.
The purpose of this study is to examine what aspects of mathematical activities in elementary school mathematics textbooks pre-service school teachers pay attention to in the process of didactic transposition. To do this, the third grade students of the College of Education were asked to analyze the activities of the elementary mathematics textbooks and then select a lesson activities as needed to modify or supplement the activities. As a result of the study, in the process of revising textbook activities for mathematics lessons, pre-service teachers pay attention to whether the textbook activities provide concrete activities, whether they induce student motivation, and whether there is overlap between classes activities. For the didactic transposition of textbook activities for mathematics lessons, pre-service teachers were able to comprehensively utilize relevant curriculum documents such as national curriculum and teachers' manual for checking the goals and achievement standards and lesson objectives.
The purpose of this study is to develop and implement an alternative elementary mathematics curriculum to enhance creative problem solving ability. The curriculum consisting of three main elements was developed. The three elements are content knowledge, process knowledge and creative thinking skills. The curriculum contents and the units were developed by mathematics educators, elementary educators, psychologists, elementary school teachers and curriculum specialists for 3 years. In order to test the effectiveness of the developed curriculum, the 5 units based on a problem-based-learning (PBL) method were implemented in a 5th grade class as an experimental group during the second semester. For the comparison group the ordinary lesson based on the 6th national mathematics curriculum was implemented during the same period. Performance assessment was developed and used for the pre and post test. T-est was use to testify that the effect of the curriculum is statistically signigicant. The results of the test showed that the experimental group progressed significantly in the creative problem solving ability, but the comparison group did not.
This study analyzed the processes of lesson plan, implementation, and reflection by a professional learning community with five teachers who were teaching second grade students in the same elementary school. The results of the study showed that the learning community helped the teachers prepare for a lesson effectively, enhance their teaching practices, and reflect on their teaching methods. However, the teachers had difficulties in re-designing and implementing the collaborative lesson plan in their classrooms and had a tendency to talk about their feelings about lessons rather than meaningful comments for subsequent lessons. The successes and difficulties revealed through this study are expected to provide us with directions of learning communities for improving teachers' professional development.
In this paper I attempt to survey on the theories of observation and analysis of mathematics classroom discourse. In order to discuss applicability of the theories I look at preservice teachers' observation of mathe-matics classroom and teachers' conception of mathematics lesson. In examining reports from preservice teachers' I identify how they understand mathematics lesson and how the theories can enhance their understanding. Not surprisingly, there are lots of obstacles for teachers to practice mathe-matics educational theories. 1 find some features of their efforts or attempts to overcome the obstacles in an attempt to gain insights into alternative ways of concep-tualizing the methods of observation and analysis through the interview and the discussion with teachers.
