  • Background: The purpose of this study was to examine associations between classification of the Geriatric Screening for Care-10 (GSC-10) and the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) among elderly inpatients. Methods: Among elderly inpatients aged over 65 admitted to hospital (from November 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017), the data for 5,780 patients (who were evaluated using the Morse Fall Scale and the Geriatric Screening for Care-10) were analyzed using x2-tests and t-tests to examine differences between the GSC-10 and MFS, according to general characteristics of elderly inpatients (i.e., gender) using IBM SPSS Statistics 24. Results: : Scores for the GSC-10 were significantly higher in women than men for depression (p<.001), delirium (p=.048), functional decline (p<.001), incontinence (p<.001), and pain (p<.001). Statistically significant differences in all domains of the GSC-10 for elderly hospitalized patients were found for the classification of fall risk. Conclusion: The findings of this study, as supported by the GSC-10, indicate that the most common problems experienced by the elderly are related to the risk of falling. In order to reduce the incidence of falls in elderly inpatients, customized fall prevention based on the GSC-10 results is necessary.

  • Objectives: Republic of Korea has entered an aged society, recently. As chronic diseases increase, elderly inpatients has been increasing and they have used caregivers for convenience. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the oral health knowledge and attitude of caregivers on oral health management of elderly inpatients, which would affect the general health and quality of life. Methods: A survey questionnaire was distributed to the caregiver(n=165), at a neurosurgery or orthopedic hospital inpatient ward in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do from April 1 to 14, 2017. We analyzed the data with descriptive statistics analysis, chi-squared analysis and logistic regression analysis by using SPSS 23.0. Results: The response rate to the questionnaire was 92%. Oral health management provided by caregivers to inpatients in the elderly was prevention of oral diseases(92.8%), tooth brushing (89.5%), use of oral care products(68.4%), denture cleaning(90.8%) and oral cleaning(90.8%). Frequency analysis of oral health management in accordance with the educational needs of caregivers was all confirmed statistically significant(p<0.05). In the logistics regression model, oral health knowledge was significantly associated with low oral cleaning(OR=1.58) and oral health attitude was significantly associated with high denture cleaning(OR=1.29) and oral cleaning(OR=1.28) after adjustment for other covariates including gender, age, certification, education level, ward, working years. Conclusions: It is necessary to expand the scope and improve the quality of education that can change the attitudes and behaviors of the caregivers on the oral health management of the elderly on the basis of the current oral health education.

  • Objectives : To review the drug prescription pattern of antiulcerative agents for elderly inpatients, Methods : The study population comprised inpatients of community hospitals who were members of the Korean Elderly Pharmacoepidemiologic Cohort (KEPEC), aged 65 years or over, beneficiaries of the Korea Medical Insurance Corporation (KMIC) and residing in Busan city in 1993. The drug prescription information was collected from the claims data of hospitals where the cohort members received medical care between January 1993 and December 1594. The information included personal identification, age, gender, diagnosis, drug dosage, date of hospital admission and name of medical institutions where the study subjects received drug prescriptions. The data analysis produced outcomes in terms of distribution of antiulcerative agents by class and by medical institution and trend of relative prescription, Analysis was also performed in terms of combined prescriptions of antiulceratives and drugs that could induce risk from drug interaction with antiulceratives. Results : The number of patients prescribed antiulcerative agents was 1,059 (64,9%) male and 1,724 (65.5%) female among the total inpatients. An antacid and composite agent was the most frequently prescribed antiulcerative agent (70.8%), followed by $H_2$ antagonist (16.0%), Among the potential drugs that could induce risk from drug interaction with the antiulcerative agents, diazepam was the most frequently prescribed. The proportion of diazepam co-prescription was 22.5% of the total cimetidine prescriptions and 14.5% of the fetal omeprazole prescriptions. Conclusions : Antiulcerative drugs were frequently prescribed in the elderly inpatients. The adverse drug reaction could possibly be due to drug interaction. The study results could be used as fundamental data for further drug utilization review of antiulceratiye agents.

Methods: A non-equivalent pre-and post-test design was used. Sixty-six hospitalized patients were recruited using a convenience sampling method and assigned to the experimental (n=34) or the control group (n=32). For the experiment, bergamot, lavender, and roman camomile oil were mixed in 2:1:1 ratio to provide aroma hand massage to both hands of each patient in the experimental group for 5 minutes per hand, for 3 days. Post-test data collection was conducted three days after completion of the hand massage. Results: The experimental group had significantly lower stress score (t=-2.648, p=.010, and anxiety scores (t=-4.166, p=.000), and higher sleep measurement scores (t=2.328, p=.023) than those in the control group. Conclusion: These results indicate that short-term application of aroma hand massage for hospitalized elderly patients has a positive effect on hospitalization stress, anxiety, and sleep. Therefore, aroma hand massage should be applied as a nursing intervention to reduce stress response and enhance sleep in elderly hospitalized patients.

Drug Use Knowledge Scale, Self-efficacy for Appropriate Medication Use Scale, and Drug Misuse Scale were used. Analysis included descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, repeated measured ANOVA. Results: Findings showed significant differences in knowledge of medication and drug misuse between groups according to time(pretest, post 1, and post 2). At post 1 and post 2, knowledge and self-efficacy levels were significantly higher and misuse scores were lower in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Findings indicate that elder-tailored medication education consisting of group education and individual guidance with images is effective and practical for medicine safety in elderly inpatients. Moreover, it could lead to a healthier life for elders, even elders with multiple chronic diseases and taking several medications.

The subjects were consisted of elderly patients over the age of 65, 50 people in geriatric hospital of gwangju and jeonnam area. The results are as follows: First, swallowing function score of the subjects is $29.90{\pm}5.27$, SWAL-QOL score is $158.12{\pm}33.36$, ADL score is $80.40{\pm}22.91$. Second, swallowing function, SWAL-QOL details and ADL details of each other showed a statistically significant correlation. Third, the items of swallowing function affecting on quality of life are 'oral cavity in residue', 'to eat solid food', and 'phlegm obstructs the throat'. In conclusion, this study showed that swallowing function of inpatients in geriatric hospital is closely associated with the quality of life and the activity of daily living. Therefore, future development of programs for the improvement of swallowing function is required in order to improve the quality of life of inpatients in geriatric hospital.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of elderly motorcycle accidents according to data from elderly inpatients to prepare prevention measures for the elderly against injury in motorcycle accidents. Chi-squared test, independent sample t-test, and canonical correlation analysis were performed on the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's National Hospital Discharge In-depth Injury Survey data from 2015 to 2019, from which the records of 1,384 elderly inpatients hospitalized because of motorcycle accidents were obtained. intracranial injury(S06) was the most common care and treatment characteristic for both age groups. The most frequent injury site was the head and neck, and the most frequent injury type was a fracture. The above findings show that prevention education and policy formulation at the national level are necessary to identify and manage the factors of elderly motorcycle accidents. This study provides basic data for developing measures and policies to prevent and reduce injuries, making it significant for public health causes.
