The strain localization of concrete is a phenomenon such that the deformation of concrete is localized in finite region along with softening behavior. The objective of this paper is to develop a plasticity and damage algorithm for the finite element analysis of the strain-localization in concrete. In this paper, concrete member under strain localization is modeled with localized zone and non-localized zone. For modeling of the localized zone in concrete under strain localization, a general Drucker-Prager failure criterion by which the nonlinear strain softening behavior of concrete after peak-stress can be considered is introduced in a thermodynamic formulation of the classical plasticity model. The return-mapping algorithm is used for the integration of the elasto-plastic rate equation and the consistent tangent modulus is also derived. For the modeling of non-localized zone in concrete under strain localization, a consistent nonlinear elastic-damage algorithm is developed by modifying the free energy in thermodynamics. Using finite element program implemented with the developed algorithm, strain localization behaviors for concrete specimens under compression are simulated.

The hydro-elastic system consisting of a pre-stretched highly elastic plate, compressible Newtonian viscous fluid, and the rigid wall is considered and it is assumed that on the plate a lineal-located time-harmonic force acts. It is required to investigate the dynamic behavior of this system and determine how the problem parameters and especially the pre-straining of the plate acts on this behavior. The elasticity relations of the plate are described through the harmonic potential and linearized (with respect to perturbations caused by external time-harmonic force) form of these relations is used in the present investigation. The plane-strain state in the plate is considered and the motion of that is described within the scope of the three-dimensional linearized equations of elastic waves in elastic bodies with initial stresses. The motion of the fluid is described by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations and it is considered the plane-parallel flow of this fluid. The Fourier transform with respect to the space coordinate is applied for a solution to the corresponding boundary-value problem. Numerical results on the frequency response of the interface normal stress and normal velocity and the influence of the initial stretching of the plate on this response are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established that the initial stretching of the plate can decrease significantly the absolute values of the aforementioned quantities.
A simple method to measure the elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio v of diamod-like carbon (DLC) films deposited on Si wafer was suggested. Using the anisotropic etching technique of Si we could make the edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate. DLC film is chemically so inert that we could not on-serve any surface damage after the etching process. The edge of DLC overhang free from constraint of Si substrate exhibited periodic sinusoidal shape. By measuring the amplitude and the wavelength of the sinu-soidal edge we could determine the stain of the film required to adhere to the substrate. Since the residual stress of film can be determine independently by measurement of the curvature of film-substrate com-posite we could calculated the biaxial elastic modulus E/(1-v) using stress-strain relation of thin films. By comparing the biaxial elastic modulus with the plane-strain modulus E/(1-{{{{ { v}^{2 } }}) measured by nano-in-dentation we could further determine the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio independently. This method was employed to measure the mechanical properties of DLC films deposited by {{{{ { {C }_{6 }H }_{6 } }} rf glow discharge. The was elastic modulus E increased from 94 to 169 GPa as the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} increased from 127 to 221 V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} Poisson's ratio was estimated to be abou 0.16∼0.22 in this {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} range. For the {{{{ { V}_{ b} / SQRT { P} }} less than 127V/{{{{ {mTorr }^{1/2 } }} where the plastic deformation can occur by the substrate etching process however the present method could not be applied.

The paper is on contact analysis of a spherical ball with a deformable flat, considering the effect of tangent modulus on the contact parameters of a non-adhesive frictionless elastic-plastic contact. The contact analysis of this model has been carried out using analysis software Ansys and Abaqus. The contact parameters such as area of contact between two consecutive steps, volume of bulged material are evaluated from the formulated equations. The effect of the tangent modulus is considered for determining these parameters. The tangent modulus are accounted between 0.1E and 0.5E of materials E/Y value greater than 500 and less than 1750. Result shows that upto an optimal tangent modulus values the elastic core push up to the free surface in the flat. The simulation is also carried out in Abaqus and result provide evidence for the volume of bulged material in the contact region move up and flow into the free surface of the flat from the contact edge between the ball and flat. The strain energy of the whole model is varied between 20 to 40 percentage of the stipulated time for analysis.
Elastic waves provide an important information about the soil mass in the near-surface. Soil properties in relation to elastic wave parameters are clarified to facilitate the application of geophysical technique to soil characterization. As an example, experiments are performed to gain further insight into the behavior of unsaturated particulate materials using bender elements. The small strain stiffness is continuously measured on specimens subjected to drying, and changes in stiffness are related to changes in interparticle forces such as capillarity, bonding due to ion sharing, buttress effect due to fine migration, and cementation due to salt precipitation. The rate of menisci regeneration is studied after a perturbation as well. Finally, several phenomena associated with the evolution of capillary forces during drying are identified.

The Hertzian indentation contact damage behavior of porous alumina with controlled pore shape was investigated by experiments. Porous alumina ceramics containing well-defined pore shape, size and distribution were prepared by incorporation of fugitive spherical starch. Porous alumina with isolated pore structure was prepared with porosity range up to 30%. The indentation stress-strain curves of porous alumina were constructed. Elastic modulus and yield stress can be obtained from the stress-strain relationship. Impulse excitation method for the measurement of elastic modulus was also conducted as well as Hertzian indentation and was confirmed as a useful tool to evaluate the elasticity of highly porous ceramics. Elastic modulus of the inter-connected pore structure is more sensitive to porosity than that of the isolated pore structure. When the specimen had isolated pore structure, higher yield point was obtained than it had inter-connected pore structure. This study proposed that the elastic modiulus of porous ceramics is strongly related to not only porosity, but also the structure of pore.

As a part of round robin analysis to develop a finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis procedure for nuclear safety class 1 components, a series of parametric analyses was carried out on the simulated pressurizer surge line system model to investigate sensitivity of the analysis results to finite element analysis variables. The analysis on the surge line system model considered dynamic effect due to the seismic load corresponding to PGA 0.6 g and elastic-plastic material behavior based on the Chaboche combined hardening model. From the parametric analysis results, it was found that strains such as accumulated equivalent plastic strain and equivalent plastic strain are more sensitive to the analysis variables than von Mises effect stress. The parametric analysis results also identified that finite element density and ovalization option in the elbow elements have more significant effect on the analysis results than the other variables.

Effect of thickness stretching on mechanical behavior of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) laminated nanoplates resting on elastic foundation is analyzed in this paper using a novel quasi 3D higher-order shear deformation theory. The key feature of this theoretical formulation is that, in addition to considering the thickness stretching effect, the number of unknowns of the displacement field is reduced to four, and which is more than five in the other models. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are the reinforced elements and are distributed with four power-law functions which are, uniform distribution, V-distribution, O-distribution and X-distribution. To cover various boundary conditions, an analytical solution is developed based on Galerkin method to solve the governing equilibrium equations by considering the nonlocal strain gradient theory. A modified two-dimensional variable Winkler elastic foundation is proposed in this study for the first time. A parametric study is executed to determine the influence of the reinforcement patterns, power-law index, nonlocal parameter, length scale parameter, thickness and aspect ratios, elastic foundation, thermal environments, and various boundary conditions on stresses, displacements, buckling loads and frequencies of the CNTRC laminated nanoplate.

Effect of thickness stretching on free vibration, bending and buckling behavior of carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) laminated nanoplates rested on new variable elastic foundation is investigated in this paper using a developed four-unknown quasi-3D higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The key feature of this theoretical formulation is that, in addition to considering the thickness stretching effect, the number of unknowns of the displacement field is reduced to four, and which is more than five in the other models. Two new forms of CNTs reinforcement distribution are proposed and analyzed based on cosine functions. By considering the higher-order nonlocal strain gradient theory, microstructure and length scale influences are included. Variational method is developed to derive the governing equation and Galerkin method is employed to derive an analytical solution of governing equilibrium equations. Two-dimensional variable Winkler elastic foundation is suggested in this study for the first time. A parametric study is executed to determine the impact of the reinforcement patterns, nonlocal parameter, length scale parameter, side-t-thickness ratio and aspect ratio, elastic foundation and various boundary conditions on bending, buckling and free vibration responses of the CNTRC plate.
The problem of interest is formulating elastic contact problem of a layered semi-infinite solid in terms of Fourier integral. The plane strain problem is considered for a solid composed of homogeneous isotropic two layers with different mechanical properties. General solutions for the subsurface stress and deformation field of frictionless elastic bodies under normal loading using of Fourier transformation technique are obtained. The numerical results for the stress distribution of coated solid for some particular cases are given.
