In pressurized light water reactor fuel assembly, spacer grids support nuclear fuel rods both laterally and vertically. The fuel rods are supported by spacer grid springs and grid dimples that are located in the grid cell. The support system allows for some thermal expansion and imbalance of the fuel rods. The imbalance is absorbed by elastic energy to prevent coolant flow- induced vibration damage. Design requirements are defined and a design process is established. The design process includes mathematical optimization as well as practical design method. The shape of the grid spring is designed to maintain its function during the lifetime of the fuel assembly. A structural optimization method is employed for the shape design. Since the optimization is carried out in the linear range of finite element analysis, the optimum solution is verified by nonlinear analysis. A good design is found and the final design is compared with the initial conceptual design. Commercial codes are utilized for structural analysis and optimization.

A conventional elastic material replacement and performance evaluation are very complicated and time-consuming, and it is difficult to know when to replace the elastic material in advance. By comparing with the product limit and the functional limit, the necessity of elastic material replacement and the improvement of track support stiffness according to replacement can be immediately demonstrated based on experimental data. Using an evaluation system of track support stiffness, the performance evaluation data for elastic materials obtained through field tests using software for track support stiffness is integrated and managed on the administrator's computer. Therefore, the replacement plan is established and maintenance history is managed by identifying the replacement time and location of elastic materials. It is possible to evaluate the performance and condition of the elastic material at the various points during the working time of the track inspection and the track performance (track support stiffness) and durability of the elastic material (aging level, spring stiffness variation rate, etc.) at the operation condition. The elastic material could be replaced timely, and the deterioration of the elastic material can be continuously monitored.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration characteristics of tapered beams with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass with translational elastic support at the other end. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of section ratio, dimensionless spring constant and mass ratio.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the natural frequencies and mode shapes of tapered beams with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass with translational elastic support at the other end. The lowest three natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are calculated over a wide range of section ratio, dimensionless spring constant, and mass ratio.
Shear test procedure for concrete-dowel interaction was proposed along with determination of dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant using the spreadsheet example. For this task, three AASHTO-type standard specimens were prepared to simulate behavior of the jointed concrete pavement. A side support system was adopted to minimize twisting of the test specimen which had been observed in a preliminary test. A typical elastic behavior of the dowel-concrete interaction was observed from several test loops of loading, unloading and reloading procedures. However load versus slab displacement represents to be nonlinear. Test results show that the dowel support reaction factor ranges from 550-880 GN/m3, which is 1.4-2.2 times greater than 407GN/m3 proposed by Yoder and Witczak. This is because less torsional distraction was occurred with the help of a side support system adopted in this experiment. The dowel support reaction factor or shear spring stiffness constant obtained from the procedures proposed in this paper may be used as a reference data for the structural analysis of jointed concrete pavement.

In vibration-free vehicles such as limousine buses, the vibration is minimized by installing an air spring instead of the leaf spring used in the existing freight cars to prevent the damage to the loaded cargo from shocks generated during movement. In the existing vehicles, steel structures support the air spring system. This study was aimed at replacing the steel structures used in the Z-spring by carbon fiber and glass fiber reinforced plastics. In addition, the mechanical properties (elastic modulus, tensile strength, and shear strength) of carbon fiber and glass fiber prepreg were derived using specimens molded with the corresponding prepreg. The final goal was to develop a material lighter than the conventional steel material but with enhanced mechanical properties. Although the CF prepreg exhibited excellent mechanical properties, the production cost was extremely high. To overcome this limitation, hybrid composites with GF prepreg were examined, which are expected to be promising future materials.

In this study, a submerged plate-type breakwater is considered, which is supported by elastic foundation. This breakwater makes use of wave phase interaction among the incident, diffracted and radiated waves. We apply a three-dimensional singularity distribution method within the linear potential theory in order to describe the wave field. The submerged plate is assumed to be rigid and the elastic support be a linear spring with constant stiffness. A typical rectangle plate is exemplified for numerical calculation. The thickness of the plate is carefully selected in order to guarantee the solution to be stable by checking the condition number of the system matrix. A parametric study is carried out for examining the effect of the stiffness of the elastic support on performance of the breakwater. We also examine the effect of the submerged depth.

The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of non-circular arches with the translational (radial and tangential directions) and rotational springs at the ends, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest four natural frequencies for the parabolic geometry are calculated over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the arch rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, and the translational and rotational spring parameters.
Thermal expansion which occurs at the high speed rail joint is proportional to the free length from the point of fixity. This thermal expansion behaves similar to free expansion because the girder longitudinal stiffness is much larger than longitudinal resistance of rail pads. But the longitudinal displacement in the long rail is nominal because the longitudinal support condition of the girder is normally MFM(movable-fix-movable) system. Due to these girder expansion characteristics, there is longitudinal relative displacement at the rail pad and rail fastener spring which connects rail and girder. If the relative displacement between rail and girder is beyond the elastic limit for the rail pad, rail fastener system shall be applied using sliding fastener to prevent rail pad damage and fastener separation resulting from slip. On the other hand, train vertical vibration and tilting can occur due to the lack of fastener vertical force if the sliding fastener is applied at the girder joint. In the high speed rail bridge, vibration can occur due to the spring stiffness of the elastomeric bearing, also both vertical downward and upward displacement can occur. The elastomeric bearing vertical movement can cause rail displacement and finally the stability of the ballast is reduced because the gravel movement is induced.
