  • An optimization formulation of unconstrained damping treatment on beams is proposed to minimize vibration responses using a numerical search method. The fractional derivative model is combined with RUK's equivalent stiffness approach in order to represent nonlinearity of complex modulus of damping materials with frequency and temperature. The loss factors of partially covered unconstrained beam are calculated by the modal strain energy method. Vibration responses are calculated by using the modal superposition method, and of which design sensitivity formula with respect to damping layout is derived analytically. Plugging the sensitivity formula into optimization software, we can determine optimally damping treatment region that gives minimum forced response under a given boundary condition. A numerical example shows that the proposed method is very effective in minimizing vibration responses with unconstrained damping layer treatment.

  • A method to estimate the radiatio power to the surrounding formation due to axial vibration of the pipe in a fluid-filled borehole has been developed, by using the propagation modes of stress wave in an infinitely-long and uniform drilling borehole surrounded by a radially-infinite homogeneous formation. Also, the equivalent damping coefficient for the axial vibration of the pipe has been derived. As an example, results for a real drilling borehole has been presented. The analysis of the elastic motion of the infinite formation which has cylidrical cavity is simplified with the geometric axisymmetry and the low-frequency assumption so that the analytic solution is obtained.

  • This paper proposes a novel RF MEMS dc-contact switch with stiff membrane on a quartz substrate. The uniqueness of this work lies in the utilization of a seesaw mechanism to restore the movable part to its rest position. The switching action is done by using separate pull-down and pull-up electrodes, and hence operation of the switch does not rely on the elastic recovery force of the membrane. One of the main problems faced by electrostatically actuated MEMS switches is the high operational voltages, which results from bending of the membrane, due to internal stress gradient. This is resolved by using a stiff and thick membrane. This membrane consists of flexible meanders, for easy movement between the two states. The device operates with an actuation voltage of 6.43 V, an insertion loss of -0.047 dB and isolation of -51.82 dB at 2 GHz.

  • Primary cyst of the diaphragm is a rather uncommon disease. This is a report of a case of diaphragmatic cyst, located in the tendinous portion of the right diaphragm. The patient had no specific symptoms in the respiratory systems, but suffered from gastrointestinal symptoms [indigestion, epigastralgia, and loss of appetite etc.] for 2 months. Accidentally, on a simple chest x-ray examination, a round homogenous mass density was discovered. Tomography showed a well circumscribed parenchymatous mass. So a coin lesion in the medial segment of the right lower lobe was suspected. A thoracotomy was performed. There were no pathological findings in the lung and pleura. A ping-pong ball sized round mass, which was soft, elastic and fluctuated, was noted in the tendinous portion of the diaphragm. It was enucleated completely without diaphragmatic rupture, and diagnosed as a primary diaphragmatic cyst [fibrous-walled] by the histopathologic examination. Postoperative course was uneventful.

  • This paper investigates the effects of micro-tunneling on buried pipelines parametrically. A simplified numerical approach was developed and various parametric studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of ground settlements on the response of buried pipelines. The controlled parameters included the pipe stiffness, ground loss magnitude, and pipe location with respect to a micro-tunnel. Maximum settlement and curvature along a pipeline have been investigated and compared among others for different conditions. In addition, the numerical results have been compared with a theoretical method by Attewell et al. (1986), which is based on a Winkler type linear-elastic solution. The comparison indicated that the response of buried pipes to micro-tunneling-induced ground settlements highly depends on the soil-pipe interaction including the separation and slippage of pipe from soil with the effects of the investigated parameters. Therefore, rather than using the theoretical method directly, it would be a better assessment of the response of buried pipelines to consider the soil-pipe interaction in more realistic conditions.

  • This paper proposes a double cantilever sandwich-beam method fur evaluating the frequency dependence of dynamic characteristics of rubbers. The flexural vibration of a double cantilever sandwich-beam specimen with an inserted rubber layer was studied using a finite element simulation in combination with the sine-sweep test. Quadratic relationships of dynamic elastic modulus and material loss factor of rubbers with frequency were suggested employing the least square error method.

  • Rubber materials are extensively used in various machine design application, mainly for vibration/shock/noise control devices. Over the years an enormous effort has been put into developing procedures to provide properties of rubber material for design function. However, there are still a lot of difficulties in the understanding of dynamic characteristics of the rubber components in compression. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of rubber materials for anti-vibration under compression were investigated. Dynamic and static tests for rubber material with 3 different hardness were performed. In dynamic tests, non-resonance method, impedance method, was used to obtain the complex modulus(storage modulus and loss factor) and the effects of static pre-strain on the dynamic characteristics were investigated. Also, a relation equation between linear dynamic and nonlinear static behavior of rubber material was discussed and its usefulness to predict their combined effects was investigated.

  • In recent railway construction, the concrete slab track is getting highlighted as main stream in track type. However, it is the fact that there are different opinions in selection of the optimized spring coefficient of elastic pad. In this study, the performance of vibration reduction in different stiffness of rail pad for ballasted track was compared, and the changes in characteristics, such as static/dynamic deflection of components, vibration acceleration, insertion loss etc., were analysed by using ISI Program for various types of rail fastening system used in concrete slab track. It was concluded that the fastening system with softer pads has shown the better performance of vibration reduction in concrete slab track and the optimized static stiffness has been calculated to 21.1kN/mm for conventional railways, 17.6kN/mm for high-speed railways and 17.8kN/mm for subways.

  • Bulk metallic glass (BMG) shows higth strength, high elastic limit, corrosion resistance and good wear resistance and soft magnetic properties and has been considering as a candidate for new structural materials. But they show limited macroscopic plasticity and lack of tensile ductility due to highly localized shear deformation, which should be solved for real structural application. In this paper researches on the enhancement of plasticity of BMG were reviewed briefly. Introducing heterogeneous structure in glass is effective to induce more shear transformation zones (STZs) active for multiple shear band initiation and also to block the propagating shear band. Several methods such as BMG alloy design for high Poisson's ratio, addition of alloying element having positive heat of mixing, pre-straining BMG and variety of BMG composites have been developed for homogenous distribution of locally weak region, where local strain can be initiated. Therefore enhancement of plasticity of BMG is normally accompanied with some penalty of strength loss.

  • This study was carried out an experimental and finite element analysis on the fracture behavior of straight pipes with local wall thinning under internal pressure. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area has an eroded ratio of d/t=0.80~0.92 and an eroded length of l=25, 50 and 102 mm. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate failure behaviors. In regards to the relation ship between pressure and eroded ratio, the criterion that can be used safely under operating pressure and design pressure were obtained from this calculation. The results of this calculation were in relatively good agreement with that of the experiment.
