  • This paper uses the finite element method to simultaneously consider the coupled cable-deck vibrations and the parametric vibrations of stay cables in dynamic analysis of a cable-stayed bridge. The stay cables are represented by some cable finite elements, which can consider the parametric vibration of the cables. In addition to modeling stay cables using multiple link cable elements, a procedure for removing the self-weight term of cable element is proposed. A eigenvalue analysis process using dynamic condensation method for sorting out the natural modes of the girder-tower vibrations and the Rayleigh damping considering element damping for damping matrix are also proposed for dynamic analyses of cable-stayed bridges. The possibilities of using cable elements and of using global and local vibrations to evaluate the parametric vibrations of stay cables in a cable-stayed bridge are confirmed, respectively.

  • In this paper, an efficient method of analysis and design of fault detection filter is presented. Since the directional constraint is applied to the eigenstructure associated with the detection space, an eigenvector is determined by the eigenvalues associated with other eigenvectors. Further, the assignment of a pair of eigenvalue and eigenvector leads to the fixation of overall eigenstructure related with the detection space. Using the transmission zeros and the transmission zero vectors, these phenomenon are clearly proven, and an efficient algorithm for design of the fault detection filters is presented.

  • The design of an $H{\infty}$ controller for a TCSC to enhance the damping of an inter-area oscillation in a Power system is presented. The paper describes a comprehensive and systematic way of applying the $H{\infty}$ control design algorithm in power systems. Eigen sensitivity analysis to selction a TCSC location is described. Time simulation and eigenvalue analysis show that the proposed TCSC $H{\infty}$ controller can suppress the inter-area oscillations efficiently with robustness.

  • planar circulator swith arbitrarily shaped ferrite resonators are analyzed in this paper. First, resonant frequencies and field distributions for the magnetized ferrite resonator are obtained using finite element method (FEM). Then the RF voltage distributions and other circuit parameters of the circulator which is formed by connecting three suitable transmission lines ot the ferrite resonator are derived from the green function . To remove the spurious solutions in analyzing the ferrite resonator, the results of eigenvalue analysis by node based FEM are comapred with the edge based fEM. The green function is expanded in terms of normalized eigenfunctions of th ecorresponding wave equation. Circulator parameters for circular disk resonator are clculated and compared with the analytical results. The experimental data for the designed circulator using hexagonal reosnator in the 850 MHz frequency range agree well iwth the simulated data.

  • 3D-PTV measurement was conducted on the wake of a sphere. The Reynolds number is 1130 with the diameter(d=30mm). The measurement system consisted of three CCD cameras, an image grabber, an Ar-Ion laser and a host computer. An eigenvalue analysis was introduced for the analysis on the wake. Statistical turbulent properties were quantitatively clarified using the time-consecutive instantaneous three-dimensional vectors obtained by the 3D-PTV system. The spatial distributions of the sphere wake showed strong relations with spiral motions of the vortcies shedded from the surface of the sphere.

  • It has become apparent from the recent work by Choi et al. [3] on the nonlinear beam deflection problem, that analysis of the integral operator $\mathcal{K}$ arising from the beam deflection equation on linear elastic foundation is important. Motivated by this observation, we perform investigations on the eigenstructure of the linear integral operator $\mathcal{K}_l$ which is a restriction of $\mathcal{K}$ on the finite interval [$-l,l$]. We derive a linear fourth-order boundary value problem which is a necessary and sufficient condition for being an eigenfunction of $\mathcal{K}_l$. Using this equivalent condition, we show that all the nontrivial eigenvalues of $\mathcal{K}l$ are in the interval (0, 1/$k$), where $k$ is the spring constant of the given elastic foundation. This implies that, as a linear operator from $L^2[-l,l]$ to $L^2[-l,l]$, $\mathcal{K}_l$ is positive and contractive in dimension-free context.

  • This paper describes the FEM analysis for squeak problem of the ceramic-on-ceramic hip joint system. The onset of hip squeak is estimated by the positive real parts of the eigenvalues in the hip joint system. From the complex eigenvalue analysis, the unstable frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are determined at the certain severe friction coefficients. It is found that some bending and torsion modes of the femoral stem can be unstable due to the mode-coupling mechanism. It also shows that the magnitude of the friction coefficient plays a key role on the occurrence of hip squeak.

  • In this study, the exact rigidity and the free vibration of trapezoidal corrugated plate are analyzed by being based on the Kirchhoff's plate theory and the Ritz method. The previous rigidity of corrugated plate analyzed by considering just a geometric characteristic, a basic assumption and an equivalent idea can cause large errors in practical behaviors. Accordingly, the exact rigidity supplemented by correction factors of the theoretical rigidity is needed. Therefore an analysis on the exact rigidity and the free vibration using the rigidity for the plate is performed in this paper.

  • In this paper, the stability of a flexible missle, idealized as a free-free beam, is evaluated by using the finite element method. For the study, heavy machinery part is modeled as a concentrated mass and the thrust, which is controlled by a feedback sensor located at a predetermined position, is considered as a constant follower force. The aerodynamic forces, the structural damping, the cross sectional variation servo lag effect are neglected in this study. With unconstrained variational principle, the finite element method is applied to the nondimensionalized beam eqution. The matrix eigenvalue equation is obtained and the eigenvalues are calculated by a computer for the stability analysis. The stability is evaluated by the inspection of the eigenvalues are calculated by a computer for the stabilith analysis. The stabilith is evaluated by the inspection of the eigenvalues of the problem. For the study, the behaviors of the eigenvalues at various thrusts and the effects of the magnitudes and positions of the concentrated mass and directional control constant are analyzed.

  • Dynamic stability and behavior are analyzed fur Pendulum Automatic Dynamic Balancer which is a device to reduce an unbalanced mass of rotors. The nonlinear equations of motion for a system including a Pendulum Balancer are derived with respect to polar coordinate by Lagrange's equations. The perturbation method is applied to find the equilibrium positions and to obtain the linear variation equations. Based on linearized equations, the dynamic stability of the system around the equilibrium positions is investigated by the eigenvalue problem. (omitted)
