As in the other fields of mechanics, analytical methods represent an important analysis tool in marine hydrodynamics. The analytical approach is interesting for different reasons : it gives reference results for numerical codes verification, it gives physical insight into some complicated problems, it can be used as a simplified predesign tool, etc. This approach is of course limited to some simplified geometries (cylinders, spheres, ...), and only the case of one or more cylinders, truncated or not, will be considered here. Presented methods are basically eigenfunction expansions whose complexity depends on the boundary conditions. The hydrodynamic boundary value problem (BVP) is formulated within the usual assumptions of potential flow and is additionally simplified by the perturbation method. By using this approach, the highly nonlinear problem decomposes into its linear part and the higher order (second, third, ...) corrections. Also, periodicity is assumed so that the time dependence can be factorized i.e. the frequency domain formulation is adopted. As far as free surface flows are concerned, only cases without or with small forward speed are sufficiently simple to be solved semi-analytically. The problem of the floating body advancing in waves with arbitrary forward speed is far more complicated. These remarks are also valid for the general numerical methods where the case of arbitrary forward speed, even linearized, is still too difficult from numerical point of view, and "it is fair to say that there exists at present no general practical numerical method for the wave resistance problem" [9], and even less for the general seakeeping problem. We note also that, in the case of bluff bodies like cylinders, the assumptions of the potential flow are justified only if the forward speed is less than the product of wave amplitude with wave frequency.

An improved NDIF method is introduced to efficiently extract eigenvalues of two-dimensional, arbitrarily shaped acoustic cavities. The NDIF method, which was developed by the authors for the eigen-mode analysis of arbitrarily shaped acoustic cavities, membranes, and plates, has the feature that it yields highly accurate eigenvalues compared with other analytical methods or numerical methods (FEM and BEM). However, the NDIF method has the weak point that the system matrix of the NDIF method depends on the frequency parameter and, as a result, a final system equation doesn't take the form of an algebra eigenvalue problem. The system matrix of the improved NDIF method developed in the paper is independent of the frequency parameter and eigenvalues can be efficiently obtained by solving a typical algebraic eigenvalue problem. Finally, the validity and accuracy of the proposed method is verified in two case studies, which indicate that eigenvalues and mode shapes obtained by the proposed method are very accurate compared to the exact method, the NDIF method or FEM(ANSYS).

Eigenvalue reduction schemes approximate the lower eigenmodes that represent the global behavior of the structures. In the previous study, we proposed a two-level condensation scheme (TLCS) for the construction of a reduced system. And we have improved previous TLCS with combination of the iterated improved reduced system method (IIRS) to increase accuracy of the higher modes intermediate range. In this study, we apply previous improved TLCS to multi-level sub-structuring scheme. In the first step, the global system is recursively partitioned into a hierarchy of sub-domain. In second step, each uncoupled sub-domain is condensed by the improved TLCS. After assembly process of each reduced sub-eigenvalue problem, eigen-solution is calculated by Lanczos method (ARPACK). Finally, Numerical examples demonstrate performance of proposed method.
A new approach of a time-varying switching hyperplane based on the theory of variable structure system (VSS) is proposed for the control of multivariable systems. While the conventional switching surface can net achieve the robust performance against parameter variations and disturbances before the sliding mode occurs, the proposed switching hyperplane, which is obtained from the eigen-structure assignment theory powerfully used in the linear multivariable systems, ensures the sliding mode from the initial state. And new continuous control input which guarantees the sliding mode is proposed. This new control input does not arise chattering problem which arises with the conventional control input of variable structure control systems. Through numerical examples, the expellant performances of the proposed controller are verified.
In this paper, the $2^{nd}$ order hydrodynamic force effect of heaving submerged circular cylinder is considered, with the linear potential theory. Boundary value problem (BVP) is expanded up to the $2^{nd}$ order by using of the perturbation method and the $2^{nd}$ order velocity potential is calculated by means of integral equation technique using the classical Green's function expressed in cylindrical coordinates. The method of solving BVP is based on eigenfunction expansions. With different cylinder heights and heaving frequencies, graphical results are presented. As a result of the study, the cause of oscillatory force pattern is analyzed with the occurrence of negative added mass when a top of the cylinder gets closer to the free surface.

Pogo is the instability resulting from the interaction between rocket structure and propulsion system of liquid propellant rocket. The coupling of structure and propulsion system can lead to severe problem in rocket. For the analysis of pogo, a time-invariant linearized mathematical model is developed for a selected flight time. Propulsion system is modeled using element representations for each components. The constitutive equation of propulsion system is a homogeneous second-order equation form in the Laplace domain. Rocket structure is modeled using FEM. From the results of modal analysis of structure, the behavior of structure can be represented. System equations for coupling structure and propulsion system are composed of all propulsion system equations and vehicle motion equations reacting on the vehicle by each component of propulsion system. The stability is obtained by the eigen solution of system matrix. The optimization of the design variables such as size, place of accumulator for suppressing pogo instability is carried out. This article of study can be used to determine the degree of stability, and guide the design of pogo suppression system.
Environmental mismatch has been one of important issues discussed in matched field processing for underwater source detection problem. To overcome this mismatch many algorithms professing robustness have been suggested. Feature extraction method (FEM) [Seong and Byun, IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 27(3), 642-652 (2002)] is one of robust matched field processing algorithms, which is based on the eigenvector estimation. Excluding eigenvectors of replica covariance matrix corresponding to large eigenvalues and forming an incoherent subspace of the replica field, the processor is formulated similarly to MUSIC algorithm. In this paper, by using the ocean experimental data, processing results of FEM and MVDR with white noise constraint (WNC) are presented for two levels of multi-tone source. Analysis of eigen-space of CSDM and FEM performance are also presented.
The supplementalγ controls of the FACTS are designed for the enhancement of the small signal stability in power system. The designed supplementary controllers using residue are applied to SVC or TCSC for the improving the damping ratio of dominant eigen value in the New England and 39 bus test system as the sample system. The results show the validation of the supplementary controller for the enhancement of the eigenvalues which have the low frequency oscillations with poor damping ratio as the unstable problem in the sample system.
