  • This research was based on a case study of a child who experienced difficulties in ego development due to her mother's compulsive and depressed behavior. Twenty-four therapeutic play sessions, including 16 sessions involving sandplay, were conducted. Based on discussions by Neumann and Kalff, the child's early psychic development and ego development were observed during these sandplay. As part af this investigation, I conducted counseling sessions in the sandbox where the atmosphere was free and safe. The sessions were based on mother-child unity with the therapist. As a result, the child exhibited restoration of mother-child unity and showed the journey of constellation of self and ego development. The results of this research indicate the effectiveness of sandplay in accelerating ego development.

  • Purpose: This study was done to explore the experiences of ego identity development in Korean nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from 16 nursing students through in-depth interviews. The main question was, "Could you tell me your experience of developing an ego identity?" Data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: The core category of the experiences of ego identity development in Korean nursing students was 'trying to be a different new person'. Action/interaction strategies were 'solving the problem using experiences', 'making one's own success story', and 'making harmony with others'. Consequences were 'being sure of oneself as a new person'. Conclusion: Korean nursing students tried to use their experiences, achieve success, and harmonize with others. Their efforts were influenced by conflicts and supports of people around. Therefore, nurse educators should understand contextual and intervening conditions of nursing students, and try to help them achieve ego identities.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of a personality-development program on ego-resilience and maladaptive behavior of school age children. Method: This study used a non-equivalent control group pre-post design. The data was collected from Apr. 2007 to Nov. 2007. The subjects consisted of 33 children. The experimental group (n=17) participated in a self-development program that consisted of 8 sessions during an 8 week period, each session lasted for 45 minutes. To examine the effects of the self-development program an ego-resilience scale and behavior problem scale (BPPS)of K-YSR were measured before and after the program. Result: The results of analyses indicated that the score of ego-resilience increased but not significantly in the experimental group. There was significant change in anxiety/depression, social problems, and aggressive behavior of BPS of K-YSR after the intervention. Conclusion: This study showed that the 'Personality-Development Program' was effective on maladaptive behavior. Therefore, it is advisable to use it in a community-based child center for maladaptive behavior in vulnerable children.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between ego- resilience and stress coping styles of adolescents. The study also tried to identify differences on stress coping styles based on the level of ego- resilience of adolescents. Ego-resilience showed positive correlations with problem-focused and social support seeking coping styles and a negative correlation with an emotion-focused coping style. Canonical Correlation analysis revealed that self-confidence among four sub-domains of ego-resilience made the most outstanding contributions in predicting stress coping styles of adolescents. The problem-focused coping style had the highest correlation with ego-resilience among the four coping styles. The group of adolescents who had a higher level of ego-resilience reported more problem-focused and social support-seeking coping styles in stressful situations. The results of this study suggested that development of ego-resilience of adolescents who were in the midst of transitions and adjustment problems was important for effective coping strategies.

In order to study the self-concept and ego-development, we used a self-concept test and ego-development as a research tool. In addition, the present research analyzed any changes which tool place by dividing each aspect in each sand tray of the therapy process into a positive subject and a negative subject, and analyzed the changing patterns seen in the sand tray worldas it unfolded. It was proven that an efficient treatment in changing the sand tray world and children's action, had an effect on rearranging the children's mental schemas. In terms of the progress of the sandplay journey, it was seen that negative elements decreased dramatically and positive elements were observed to have increased. As a result it was confirmed that Group Sandplay Therapy had a number of positive effects in the construction of children's self-concept and in terms of the enhancement of children ego-development.

Methods: The subjects were 291 juniors and seniors who received clinical training from nursing universities in Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong. General characteristics, main study variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation; ego-resilience and clinical competence by general characteristics were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA; correlations between ego-resilience and clinical competence were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The mean score for ego-resilience was 3.44; and the mean score for clinical competence was 3.71. The data showed a positive correlation between ego-resilience and clinical competence. Conclusion: According to the results, there is a correlation between clinical competence and the ego-resilience of nursing students. Therefore, to enhance clinical competence, a follow-up study on the development of a program for advanced ego-resilience is needed.

The subjects were 169 mother-adolescent dyads living in Seoul. Statistical methods used for the data analysis were frequencies, percentiles, Mean, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, Pearson's product-moment correlation, regression analysis, ANCOVA, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$. The results were as follows: (1) Significant differences of the adolescents were between family's SES and open communication patterns, between family types and problematic communication patterns. (2) Significant differences of the mothers were between family's SES and open communication patterns, and among family's SES, mother's educational level and problematic communication patterns. (3) There were significant differences in ego-identity of adolescents according to family's SES. (4) There were significant relationships between mother-adolescent communication patterns and the ego-identity development of adolescents. • This study focused on the relationship between ego- resilience and stress coping styles of male and female adolescents. The study also tried to identify differences in stress coping styles based on sexual differences and the level of ego- resilience in adolescents. Ego-resilience showed a positive correlation to problem-focused and social support seeking coping styles and a negative correlation to emotion-focused coping style for both male and female adolescents. Canonical Correlation analysis revealed that self-confidence among four sub-domains of ego-resilience made the most outstanding contributions in predicting stress coping styles of female adolescents. The self-confident female adolescents tended to use the problem-focused coping style. For male adolescents, the optimistic attitude among four sub-domains of ego-resilience was the most significant factor in predicting emotion-focused coping style. Female adolescents tended to use more varied coping strategies than male adolescents in stressful situations. The group of adolescents who had a higher level of ego-resilience reported more problem-focused and social support- seeking coping styles in stressful situations. Conversely the group of adolescents with lower level of ego-resilience tended to use emotion-focused coping strategy. The results of this study have important implications for theory, research, and practice. Development of ego-resilience in adolescents based on sexual differences was an important task for their effective coping strategies.
