  • The purpose of this study is to investigate intrinsic values with respect to the nature of aim from the viewpoint of Dewey. The intrinsic values have been recognized as values independent of activities or the content that preexist before embodied into activities. But from the perspective of Dewey, intrinsic values can be revealed only through the activity. Because they are inherent in the activities. Dewey suggested that the educational aim that is influenced by the traditional metaphysics should be meaningless in that it is given from outside and not related to human activities. The educational purpose that influenced by modern metaphysics and contemporary theories also can be regarded external, because the content and value of learning are assumed ahead activities. In the view of Dewey, the concepts of values are exposed through activities, so they can not exist independently. According to his own metaphysics that organism and its environment interact each other, all values c an be formed only in the course of activities. Thus, the intrinsic value of Dewey is a process per se, as the intrinsic value cannot be assumed ahead activities but can be exposed through activities. Bringing meaning to life through experience is Dewey's concept of growth as an educational aim. Education under such a purpose, would give the foundation to cultivate talent who are creative, proactive and communicate with their neighbors as a member of a democratic society.

  • There has been a recurring call for using visual representations in textbooks to improve the teaching and learning of proportional reasoning. However, the quantity as well as quality of visual representations used in textbooks is still very limited. In this article, we analyzed visual representations presented in a Grade 6 textbook from two perspectives of proportional reasoning, multiple-batches perspective and variable-parts perspective, and discussed the potential of the double number line and the double tape diagram to help develop the idea 'things covary while something stays the same', which is critical to reason proportionally. We also classified situations that require proportional reasoning into five categories and provided ways of using the double number line and the double tape diagram for each category.

  • A perspective of the nature of teacher knowledge has a significant impact on why and how we study teacher knowledge. The purpose of this study was to explore the mathematics knowledge in teaching (MKiT) in terms of meanings, characteristics, and analytic methods. MKiT regards teacher knowledge as practical knowledge that has meanings only when it is employed in teaching mathematics. Various components of teacher knowledge interact one another in teaching mathematics. Given this, teacher knowledge is regarded as an organism specific to teaching contexts and it needs to be analyzed by observing lessons or a teacher's actions related directly to the lessons. This paper is expected to induce research on teacher knowledge from the MKiT perspective and urge researchers to have a profound understanding of the nature and analytic methods of teacher knowledge. Some implications of future research are included.
