Association Rule Mining and Collaborative Filtering-Based Recommendation for Improving University Graduate Attributes

  • Outcome-based education (OBE) is a tried-and-true teaching technique based on a set of predetermined goals. Program Educational Objectives (PEOs), Program Outcomes (POs), and Course Outcomes (COs) are the components of OBE. At the end of each year, the Program Outcomes are evaluated, and faculty members can submit many recommended measures which dependent on the relationship between the program outcomes and its courses outcomes to improve the quality of program and hence the overall educational program. When a vast number of courses are considered, bad actions may be proposed, resulting in unwanted and incorrect decisions. In this paper, a recommender system, using collaborative filtering and association rules algorithms, is proposed for predicting the best relationship between the program outcomes and its courses in order to improve the attributes of the graduates. First, a parallel algorithm is used for Collaborative Filtering on Data Model, which is designed to increase the efficiency of processing big data. Then, a parallel similar learning outcomes discovery method based on matrix correlation is proposed by mining association rules. As a case study, the proposed recommender system is applied to the Computer Information Systems program, College of Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Al-Baha University, Saudi Arabia for helping Program Quality Administration improving the quality of program outcomes. The obtained results revealed that the suggested recommender system provides more actions for boosting Graduate Attributes quality.

스마트폰 동영상 교육 프로그램이 일개 대학병원에서의 재활병동 입원환자 교육 만족도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Smartphone Video Educational Program on Educational Satisfaction of Patients in Rehabilitation Units at a University Hospital)

  • Purpose: This study was to determine the effect of a smartphone video educational program on educational satisfaction of patients in rehabilitation units at a university hospital. Methods: The subjects of this study were 60 stroke patients recruited and divided into two groups; experimental group (n=30) and control group (n=30). Subjects in the experimental group and control group conducted conventional physical and occupational therapy. In addition, only the experimental group provided smartphone video information for a total of 15 sessions. The video consisted of five episodes (10 minutes each) viewed a total of 15 times (for each video three times). The outcome was assessed by educational satisfaction. Result: After inervention, both groups revealed significant increased awareness of prevention of infection educational satisfaction and prevention from falling educational satisfaction and exercise program educational satisfaction. However, the experimental group was more effective than the control group relative to heightened awareness of increasing prevention of infection prevention from falling and exercise program. Conclusion: We suggest that a smartphone video educational program may be effective in improving awareness of the prevention of infection, prevention from falling, and exercise program educational satisfaction. Therefore, video-based information is beneficial for such patients. Further studies are needed for better understanding of the effectiveness of a smartphone video educational program in rehabilitation units at a university hospital.

  • Since Universal Design emerged as a new design paradigm for future, the strategies of implementing UD in educational setting has been continuously pursued. Many university programs in North America especially explored the possibility and shared their experiences in the international conferences. In asia, however, no attempt was tried. This presentation will share the navigation teaching modules used in a undergraduate course “Interior Environment and Human Behavior” class, its methodology of experience and data analysis, and finally educational outcome. Since UD is a basic human oriented design, the modules surely provided affluent and realistic opportunity for students to feel emotional sympathy to understand a diverse range of users and to facilitate creative design solution for them.

The Social Effects of Higher Education Policy in South Korea: The Rise of the "Pig Mum" phenomenon

  • The contemporary educational system in South Korea is built on high-stakes standardised tests, a manifestation of the national project of social reconstruction and reform. One recent outcome is the emergence of an unfamiliar yet ubiquitous phenomenon: the "pig mum"; a Korean parent who is fully involved in organising, scheduling and managing the educational process from primary to secondary school for a group of children in a neighbourhood. Based on a quasimixed method utilizing a survey of a group of students and parents, this pilot study explores the "pig mum" phenomenon and its linkage to education policy. The authors conclude that the current educational policy fails to achieve the ideals it professes to value. This creates deep and negative societal norms that endanger a growing generation of students by creating a parallel private education market environment where "pig mums" thrive.

역량바탕의학교육을 촉진하기 위한 교육평가: 통합평가모형 적용 (Adapting an Integrated Program Evaluation for Promoting Competency-Based Medical Education)

  • Educational program evaluation can improve the quality of the curriculum, instructional methods, and resources and provide useful data for making educational decisions and policies. Developing and implementing a program evaluation system is essential in competency-based medical education. The purpose of this study was to explore and establish an educational program evaluation system adapting an integrated program evaluation model to promote competency-based medical education. First, an Educational Evaluation Committee was organized, consisting of faculty, staff members, and students. The committee established an integrated program evaluation model, combining Stufflebeam's Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) model of a process-oriented approach and Kirkpatrick's four-level model of an outcome-oriented approach. Kirkpatrick's model was applied to the product evaluation of the CIPP model. The committee then developed evaluation criteria, indicators, and data collection methods according to the components of the CIPP model and the four levels (reaction, learning, behavior, and results) of Kirkpatrick's model, and collected and analyzed data. Finally, the committee reported the results of evaluation to a Medical Education Quality Improvement Committee, and the results were used to improve the curriculum and student selection. To enhance the quality of education, identifying educational deficiencies and developing various elements of education in a balanced way through educational evaluation will be needed. Furthermore, it will be necessary to listen to opinions of various stakeholders, work with all members involved in education, and communicate with decision-makers in the process of educational evaluation.

간호학생의 성과기반교육 달성도에 미치는 영향 (The Influences of Accomplishment of Outcome-based Education in Nursing Students)

  • 본 연구는 간호학생의 성과기반교육 달성도에 영향 미치는 요인을 확인하기 위해 364명의 간호학생을 대상으로 의사소통능력, 비판적 사고성향, 셀프리더십, 연구능력, 성과기반교육 달성도로 구성된 자가보고 질문지로 자료를 수집하였다. 간호학생의 성과기반교육 달성도는 학년, 성과기반교육 이해도 및 만족도, 임상실습 경험여부에 따라 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 성과기반교육 달성도는 의사소통능력, 비판적 사고성향, 셀프리더십, 연구능력과 양의 상관관계로 나타났다. 간호학생의 성과기반교육 달성도에 영향을 미치는 요인은 성과기반교육 만족도(${\beta}=0.33$, p<0.001), 셀프리더십(${\beta}=0.21$, p<0.001), 연구능력(${\beta}=0.18$, p<0.001), 비판적 사고성향(${\beta}=0.17$, p=0.003), 의사소통능력(${\beta}=0.14$, p=0.006), 임상실습 경험(${\beta}=0.10$, p=0.023)의 순으로 나타났으며, 성과기반교육 달성도에 대한 이들 변수의 총 설명력은 38.1%였다. 성과기반교육의 달성도를 높이기 위해 셀프리더십, 연구능력, 비판적 사고성향 및 의사소통능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 교과 및 비교과 활동 전략을 개발하고 운영해야 할 것이다.

  • 2008년 '한국심리학회지: 사회문제, 14(1), 특집호'는 한국 사회와 교육적 성취라는 대 주제를 중심으로, (1) 성취의 이론적 토대, (2) 한국 청소년의 학업성취, (3) 한국 청소년의 일탈행동, (4) 문화적 배경과 국가간 비교, (5) 한국 사회의 맥락과 과제라는 하위주제들을 다루는 다섯영역으로 구성되어 있다. 이 글에서는 이번 특집호의 배경이 된 '2006 아시아 교육의 기적 국제학술대회'를 개관하고, 앞으로의 발전방향을 모색 하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 첫째, 한국 교육의 현실을 SWOT 접근의 틀에 기초해서 약점, 위협, 기회, 강점 요인의 측면에서 분석하였다. 둘째, 2006 국제학술대회의 목표와 의의를 검토하였다. 셋째, 한국심리학회지: 사회문제 특집호 제작의 배경과 내용을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로, 이러한 검토를 기반으로 2006 국제학술대회 및 특집호의 한계와 가능성이 진단되었다. 이와 관련하여 발전방향에 대한 모색으로서, 한국 사회에서 교육적 성취와 삶의 질의 문제 및 토착심리 연구의 필요성이 지적되었다.

간호사 질 향상 교육요구도 조사 연구 (Educational Needs of Hospital-based Staff Nurses in Quality Improvement Activities)

  • Recently there are increasing concerns on quality improvement activities related to difficult economic situations, more competitive environment, health professional's emphasis on quality, and customer's needs in health care. The purpose of this study was to identify educational needs in the quality improvement for staff nurses. Study setting was an acute care hospital having more than 1000 bed in Seoul, Korea. The subjects were 40 staff nurses who participated in the first Quality Assurance(QA) inservice education. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaire which consisted of four parts : QA knowledge and attitude(ten items, by five Likert scale), contents of QA education(ten items, by setting the priority), evaluation of the program(structure, time allocation, place, educational method), and general characteristics of respondents (age, duration to work for hospitals etc.) The response rate was 85%(34/40), Most had positive perspective and attitude about QI/QA activities, but 9% had negative impression and knowledge about this activities. Also they'd like to know the plan of hospital-level QI/QA activities, QI/QA current practice, general hospital system, the role of QA specialist and so on. Consequently, for building the quality improvement activities that is customer-focused, coordinated, outcome-oriented, resource-efficient, collaborative in Korea, at first the education about philosophy, theory, and implementation process of QI/QA should be conducted, and then that on QI/QA terminology, quality indicators development, the analysis and presentation of quality-related data and so forth be followed.

학습성과의 개념과 작성에 대한 탐구 (A Critical Evaluation of the Concept and Writing of Learning Outcomes)

  • Recent changes in educational paradigms that emphasize the performance or outcomes of education are redefining how learning objectives are being described as 'learning outcomes' in various academic disciplines. Medical education is not an exception to this trend. However, it has come to our attention that the key concepts and appropriate descriptions of learning outcomes have not been well understood among educators and that this lack of understanding has hindered our efforts to implement the practice in the field. This study aims to provide a direction to establish and describe learning outcomes by examining previous studies that have focused on setting learning objectives as well as learning outcomes. Setting and describing learning outcomes starts from reflection on the approach of behavioral learning objectives, which overemphasizes learner's acquired knowledge, skills, and attitude in each classroom rather than actual performance. On the other hand, the learning outcome approach focuses on what the learner is able to do as a result of a learning experience. This approach is more learner-friendly and encourages students to lead and be responsible for their learning process. Learning outcomes can best be described when the relevance of actual contexts and the hierarchy of learning objectives are considered. In addition, they should be in the form of context, task, performance, and level, as well as be planned with proper assessment and feedback procedures. When these conditions are met, the learning outcome approach is beneficial to students as it presents a curriculum that is more open to learners. Despite these advantages of the learning outcome approach, there is a possible concern that setting the learning outcomes and describing them can restrict evaluation to lower cognitive skills if the concept of learning outcome is narrowly interpreted or is set too low. To avoid such narrow applications, it is important for educators to understand the comprehensiveness of the learning outcome setting and to consider long-term outcomes embedded in an organizational vision rather than only short-term behavioral outcomes.

오픈소스 LMS를 이용한 효율적 e-Learning 환경 구축과 학습결과 분석에 관한 연구 (Development and Learning Outcome Analysis of an Efficient e-Learning Environment using Open Source LMS)

  • 본 논문은 오픈소스를 활용하여 e-Learning 에 필수적인 LMS를 개발 제시 하였다. 이는 MTT 에서 시작된 dotLRN 오픈소스 프로젝트를 한글화 하고, 인터넷 교육 표준안인 SCORM을 수용할 수 있는 모듈을 추가 개발하여 학습자의 학습 상황을 관리할 수 있는 기능을 부여한 것이다. 본 시스템은 공주 대학교 가상 대학의 LMS로서 1년 동안 안정적으로 서비스를 제공하였으며, 이를 기반으로 개발 시스템의 기능과 특정을 알아보고, 특히 학습소요시간을 활용한 학습결과 분석에 대하여 고찰 하고자한다.
