  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the outcome of 'The second plan for identifying and nurturing of science-gifted student' and investigate the implications for the third plan. 'The second plan for identifying and nurturing of science-gifted student' was made for the promotion of science-gifted education from 2013 to 2017. This plan is composed of three strategies with 25 sub-projects: a systematic identification of science-gifted students with potential, an activation of creative and integrated science-gifted education and an establishment of optimized science education supporting system. We supposed six implications through the investigation of the performance analysis of each sub-project. First, the third plan should be composed of projects to be able to be supported directly. Second, the paradigm shift is needed from quantitative expansion to qualitative expansion. Third, third plan should include a special support for profoundly gifted students. Fourth, a specialization plan for science-gifted institute is required. Fifth, it is necessary to establish a camp or residential type gifted institute. Sixth, it is needed to have a quality management of science-gifted programs and MOOC (massive open online course) on science-gifted programs are needed.

  • This study was carried out to analyze primary gifted education systems in Korea and China. The results of the research are as follows : (1) The objectives of the gifted children education of two countries are same. They intend to dig out hidden talent and giftedness of gifted children. They emphasize the development of creativity in the gifted children through the various special teaching methods. (2) Korea has been doing the gifted education limitedly focused on the 4th grade students in elementary school after regular school curriculum, but China has performed gifted education from primary school to university quite systematically. (3) Korea tend to select the students based on the objective sources such as teachers' observation, recommendation, school scores, but this has limit to find out the real potential genius. China has the similar problems, but they consider of the comprehensive talented and abilities in students at school unit level. (4) Both countries have the teacher training systems for study to make more efficient programs and methods in gited education. It has been emphasized the necessity of gifted education to expand the range and target. Most of all it is very essential to train the teachers to manipulate the gifted education programs. The government should be persue the multiplicity and professionality now. So there are so many things to learn from China since they managed the gifted education in a regular curriculum of the school.

  • The Center for Science Gifted Education (CSGE) of Chongju National University of Education was established in 1998 with the financial support of the Korea. Science & Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). In fact, we had prepared mathematics and science gifted education program beginning in 1997. It was possible due to the commitment of faculty members with an interest in gifted education. Now we have 5 classes in Mathematics, two of which are fundamental, one of which is a strengthened second-grade class gifted elementary school students, and one a fundamental class, and one a strengthened class for gifted middle school students in Chungbuk province. Each class consists of 16 students selected by a rigorous examination and filtering process. Also we have a mentoring system for particularly gifted students in mathematics. We have a number of programs for Super-Saturday, Summer School, Winter School, and Mathematics and Science Gifted Camp. Each program is suitable for 90 or 180 minutes of class time. The types of tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving tasks. Levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be further divided into grade 5 and under, grade 6, and grade 7 and over. Types of the tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving task. Also levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be divided into the level of lower than grade 5, level of grade 6, and level of more than grade 7. • Three conjectures as the criteria for developing differentiated science learning program for gifted elementary students were derived from the previous research report: 1) The students' reasons why certain educational programs were thought to be interesting or profitable could be classified into the 3 criteria; novelty, curiosity, participation. 2) Students used to think that the programs were interesting if at least anyone of the above 3 criteria is fulfilled. 3) They think, especially, that the programs were profitable if the curiosity criterion is satisfied. To check these conjectures, 47 students were investigated with a Likert type questionnair asking how much the given program is interesting and profitable to themselves after they finished a set of programs for gifted students.

  • To evaluate the educational programs at Science Education Center for the Gifted (SECG) on how it had influenced its graduates, we have surveyed the graduates with questionnaires categorized into four sections: scientific motivation, self-confidence, knowledge/inquiry activities, and peer-to-peer interactions. Of the graduates who studied at SECG for more than two years and are currently attending college, we questioned 26 students and interviewed 10 students. According to our research data, most students evaluated highly the quality of education they received at SECG; especially, in the areas of science knowledge/inquiry activities and social interactions with their peers. Based on the results from the interviews, for these gifted students with highly developed aptitude in science, we concluded that interactions with real-world scientists, investigative approach to and application of newly-learned scientific concepts, and emphasis on interactive activities with other gifted students at SECG were regarded as effective in promoting motivations towards science and self-confidence.

  • In order to promote national competition on knowledge based-society in 21centuries, it is important for us to train talented people who have much creativity. Comparing curriculums and contents studied in SECG (Science Education Center for the Gifted) and other organizations is object of this thesis. Finding implications of proper GATE(gifted and talented education) by understanding the present conditions is also a part of this thesis. We select 5 Science Education Centers for the Gifted and devise framework for analysis in order to analyze chemical textbooks in GATE programs. The framework consists of 6 categories including the contents, the level of activities, the opening extent of experiments, and the ability to think creatively. In our study of textbooks, we have found that the contents of chapters are divided properly but lacked the field of frontier and convergence science. Their activity types will have to develop programs which consist of various activities such as lectures and experiments. Precedent studies and study activities to promote scientific thinking were rated highly in general ratio. The level of studies that we analyzed lacked creative activities very much. In the opening extent of experiments, activities in the level 2 and the level 3 were low-rate. And in our study of thinking creatively, activities of promotion for expanded and related-ability to think seemed to lack. In order to achieve specific education for the gifted children, developments of GATE program is required. In the in-depth analysis from the questionnaires of Likert's method's descriptions, narrations, and interviews, it is divided into two answers in depth: contents of program, management of program. These also divided into two answers by attitude: positive answer or negative answer. According to the responses of the contents of program, the result of analysis shows that most respondents have positive reactions to not only contents and the managing method of SECG programs, but also to individual enhancing-abilities overall.

  • We have investigated the recognition for the gifted science education program of middle school students being educated at the local center for the gifted. We developed a questionnaire that includes items for contents of the program, learning environments, participation attitude, effects of the program and improvements, and consists of it5-point Likert items and related descriptive items. 161 students at the local centers for the gifted responded to the questionnaire. The total score was 3.70 on a 5-point Likert scale. The score of effects of the program was highest, learning environments was the lowest. Most of the students referred that the participation of the programs help their schoolwork because of schoolwork preparations & review, learning the process of the solving problem and principle. On the contrary, difficult contents and long lesson hours interrupted their schoolwork. Students recognized that the programs are mainly composed of students' self-activities and the role of teachers is subsidiary. The programs have a good effect on them to increase interest in science and creative thinking. It is necessary that the program be improved in lesson hours, contents of the program, school facilities, and full service.
