Purpose : This study aims to review the physical therapy training programs in the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and Japan, and propose standardization plan for clinical practice in physical therapy education to advance the development of physical therapy education in South Korea. Methods : This study investigates the clinical practice standards in advanced countries such as the United States and Canada, and refers to the clinical practice standards in Taiwan and Japan, which are members of the association of world phyisotherapy and have economic, cultural, educational, and healthcare delivery systems, as well as legal systems, similar to those of South Korea. Results : In the United States, physical therapy education programs allocate an average of 22 weeks and 880 hours for clinical practice. Foreign-trained physical therapists who wish to take the licensure exam in the United States must have their educational programs reviewed and recognized as having completed at least 1,000 hours of clinical practice. In Canada, physical therapy education programs allocate an average of 31 weeks and 1,240 hours for clinical practice. Taiwan allocates over 1,440 hours of clinical practice in its educational programs, while Japan requires 800 hours of clinical practice as a legal prerequisite for the licensure exam. Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, the following standardization plan for clinical practice of the physical therapy education in South Korea are proposed. First, a minimum of 16 weeks and 640 hours of clinical practice is necessary to produce competent physical therapists. Second, university-based basic practical training should be at least 440 hours, with the introduction of a standardized accreditation system and unification of the four-year academic system. Third, the qualifications of physical therapists who supervise clinical practice in medical institutions should be clearly defined in the curriculum, and the standards for clinical practice instructors need to be expanded.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing the nursing practice readiness of newly graduated nurses. Methods: The participants were 120 new nurses with 1 to 12 months of work experience at two tertiary hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The data were collected through an online questionnaire from February 6 to April 30, 2023. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS 25 program, and the independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and a multiple regression analysis were performed. Results: The participants' nursing practice readiness was found to be positively correlated with their confidence in core nursing skill performance, satisfaction with clinical practice, satisfaction concerning simulation education, satisfaction regarding preceptorship, length of preceptorship and length of current unit placement. The regression analysis showed that the significant variables affecting nursing practice readiness were confidence in core nursing skill performance and satisfaction with clinical practice, and the explanatory power of the variables on nursing practice readiness was 36.0%. Conclusion: In order for newly graduated nurses to achieve nursing practice readiness, it is necessary to develop a nursing education program that can improve their confidence in core nursing skills performance and satisfaction with clinical practice in the nursing college curriculum and further research on the factors affecting nursing practice readiness is needed.
This study was designed to compare the effect of internship and preceptorship on satisfaction of clinical practice in nursing students. A total of 46 third grade students were assigned to 2 groups; 23 to inturnship group, 23 to preceptorship group. Satisfaction scores of clinical practice instruction and practice environment in internship group were higher than satisfactory scores of preceptorship group. There were no difference between satisfactory scores of clinical practice contents, clinical practice hour and clinical practice environment in internship and preceptorship. Satisfaction scores on clinical practice weren't significantly correlated with school credits. There were significant correlations among clinical practice contents, practice environment, practice instruction and clinical practice hour. There were significant correlations among clinical practice instruction, practice environment and clinical practice evaluation. Clinical practice instruction was the highest factor predicting satisfaction of clinical practice. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, 100% of the variance in satisfaction of clinical practice was accounted for by clinical practice instruction(59.1%), clinical practice contents(14.9%), clinical practice environment(12.3), clinical practice hour(8.8%), and clinical practice evaluation(5.5%).
Purpose: We investigated the effects of physical practice, mental practice, and cross education using serial reaction time (SRT) in the non-dominant left arm of right-handed individuals. Methods: Subjects were divided into three groups; physical practice (n=8), mental practice (n=8) and controls (n=8). They did, respectively, physical training or mental training, or had no intervention for three weeks. Super lab 4.0 displayed four symbols on the monitor and subjects were asked to push the matching button. Reaction time was assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results: Reaction time was significantly lower after physical practice (p<0.05), but mental practice did not significantly lower reaction time? in the left hand. Also, reaction time was not significantly lower after physical practice or mental practice in the right hand. Conclusion: Physical practice can improve motor learning, but mental practice is not sufficient. Also, neither physical practice nor mental practice is sufficient for cross education from the nondominant to the dominant arm.
Objectives: Practice of dental technology poses great potential risk since the manufacturing processes are complex and involve dangerous devices and the students are asked to handle various materials in the casting and processing process. Lacking an understanding of the overall practice process, the beginners of practice are exposed to greater danger due to their unsafe attitudes and poor practice attitudes. This study set out to investigate the students of dental technology for their attitudes toward safety and their practice of safe actions during practice and to provide basic data for safety education to prevent any possible safety incidents during practice. Methodology: The subjects include total 408 dental technology majors in their sophomore and junior year. Based on literature study and previous studies, a structured questionnaire was made, distributed to the subjects right after practice, and gathered on the spot. The questionnaire contained total 60 items, and data were collected from April 20 to May 25, 2006. Results: Collected data were analyzed in frequency and $X(C)^{\sim}$-test using the SPSS 12.0 version. The analysis results show that the students believed that they could prevent safety accidents by following safety rules and guidelines as far as safety attitudes were concerned. However, they did nothing more than paying attention to many practice processes even though they thought they were dangerous. Conclusion: Overall the subjects practiced proper safety actions during practice with significance differences in their behavioral characteristics according to grade, gender and age. The significant differences according to grade seem to derive from safety education before practice, and those according to gender and age have more to do with individual actions and common sense according to gender and age than education. Thus practice teachers need to develop safety education materials for each practice process and provide systematic safety education before practice so that the students can practice safety actions.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the awareness of gender equality and practice of housing education contents in Technology Home Economics Subject of university students. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of education and practice of the maternal role and becoming a mother using the concepts of self-confidence in caring, maternal attachment, and maternal identity. Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. Data was collected with the use of self-administered questionnaires from November 2007 to April, 2008. A total of 54 women at a Sanhujoriwon (postpartum care center) participated in the study. The experimental group consisted of 26 women (Nov-Dec), whereas the control group had 28 women (Feb-Apr). Education and practice on the maternal role was given individually and consisted of explanations, demonstrations and practice on breast feeding (day1 to 3), maternal attachment (day 8 to 9), bathing (day 10 to 11) and infant healthcare (day 13 to 14). The experimental group received education and practice on the maternal role while the control group received routine education only. Results: Data collection was done using pre and post questionnaires at admission and fourteen days later. The experimental group showed significant increases in self-confidence in caring (t=-3.31, p=.002) and maternal identity (t=-2.16, p=.036) compared to the control group. Conclusion: Education and practice on the maternal role and being a mother was an effective intervention in increasing self-confidence in caring and maternal identity.
Virtual reality (VR) simulation in nursing education, especially in the teaching of VR simulations just prior to clinical practice, has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of clinical practice and better prepare nursing students for patient care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a preclinical VR simulation education program on the development of critical thinking, self-efficacy, problem-solving ability, and perceived clinical competency among undergraduate nursing students. The study was conducted between May and June 2021 using a pretest-posttest design with a control group. A total of 42 nursing students were recruited through convenience sampling from two separate classes. The intervention group participated in VR simulation education, while the control group engaged in lecture-based education, before beginning clinical practice. Assessments were conducted before preclinical education and after completing clinical practice using structured questionnaires. The data was analyzed using chi-square tests, independent t-tests, and ANCOVA. The findings indicated that the intervention group had a significantly higher score in perceived clinical competency compared to the control group (F = 5.25, p = 0.029) after controlling for pretest scores. However, there were no statistically significant differences in critical thinking, self-efficacy, or problem-solving abilities between the two groups. These findings suggest that preclinical VR simulation education is partially effective in preparing nursing students for their clinical practice, underscoring the need for a balanced educational approach that integrates VR with clinical practice to develop a full spectrum of nursing skills and knowledge.
