The authors aimed to understand the structural relationship among lifelong education, life satisfaction, and depression in later life. For the data analysis, 4,096 older adults aged 65 and more without anti-depression treatment were subtracted from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) of the year 2012. The findings include that first, older adults' non-formal and informal learning activities influence their life satisfaction positively. Second, older adults' non-formal and informal learning activities have a negative effect on their depression. Third, older adults' depression has a negative impact on their life satisfaction. Fourth, older adults' non-formal and informal learning activities decrease the degree of depression and in turn influence their life satisfaction positively, which shows depression level has a partial mediating effect. The indirect effect of informal learning was greater than that of non-formal learning. We drew practical implications based on these findings.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-perceived benefits from singing and the quality of life of older adults aged 75 years and older. A total of 231 older adults participated in this study with 141 of them living alone and 90 of them living with others. Each participant was instructed to complete the investigator-constructed questionnaire and the Quality of Life scale. The questionnaire consisted of 49 items on demographic information, involvement in leisure activities and singing-related experiences, and perceived benefits from singing. The results showed that the amount of involvement in leisure activities and the measured quality of life were found to differ between the two subgroups of older adults living with and without others. The number of older adults who had singing-related experiences was also differed between the groups. A positive correlation was found between the amount of self-perceived benefit from singing and quality of life. These results indicate that self-perceived benefits from singing could be an important factor for the quality of life of older adults. This study supports the potential benefits of incorporating singing as an active leisure activity into interventions for older adults, expanding the research that has been extensively based on listening-based interventions. Also, it presents clinical implications for how singing interventions and programs could be designed and suggested to support this population to better cope with their life issues and enhance the quality of life.

The aim of this study is to analyse the relationships between the usefulness of information literacy education and life satisfaction on the older adults in Korea. How the information literacy education impact on the information activities is an additional research question. To achieve these objectives, data were collected through the 227 respondents of over 50-years-old adults in Korea and analysed using AMOS for the structural equation modeling. In this study, information literacy education was measured by it's usefulness aspects, and information activities were measured by it's convenience aspects. The results showed that the information literacy education influences positively both in life satisfaction and in information activities.
This study was aimed to examine the association between resilience and mental health among individuals aged 65 and older. The number of the sample was 2,004 older people living in Chuncheon city. The dependent variables were measured with depression and mental well-being. Depression was measured by the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression(CES-D) 10 items. Mental well-being was measured by Korean version of the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form(K-MHC-SF). The independent variable, resilience, was measured with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC). Adjusted for age, gender, region, education, living arrangement, religion, employment, income, and self-rated health, a logistic regression analysis result showed that resilience was negatively associated with depression among older adults. On the other hand, a multiple regression analysis result showed that resilience was positively associated with mental well-being among older adults. The study findings suggest that resilience can promote mental health in later life. Implications for older adults suffering from mental health problems are also discussed.

The aim of this study was to analyse the usefulness of information literacy education for the over 50-years older adults in Daegu, Korea. To achieve this objective, data were collected through the questionnaire survey and interview. Of the 311 valid data were categorized into two groups in accordance with their experience of information literacy education, and analysed using AMOS for the structural equation modeling. As the results, both groups showed that the information literacy education influences positively among in 'information convenience', in 'information usefulness' and in 'life satisfaction'. Also, regardless of their experience of information literacy education, the group revealed that 'information convenience' positively impacts on the 'life satisfaction', however, 'information usefulness' did not show any significant relationship with the 'life satisfaction' in this study.
The purpose of this study is to understand the diverse lifestyles of Korean older adults by analyzing the consumption pattern of older households and its determinants. The 9th wave of the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS) data was used for analysis. The twenty consumption items provided by the dataset was reduced to thirteen according to the consumption purpose inherent in the item. K-means cluster analysis and multinomial logistic regression was employed to categorize the consumption pattern of older households and to analyze the determinants. The results are as follows. The consumption pattern of Korean older adults was clustered into six distinctive groups named Breadwinner, Leisure-time pursuer, Friendly outgoes, Daily-life survivor, Illness sufferer and Shelter seeker. Breadwinner, Leisure-time pursuer and Friendly outgoes were lifestyles that earn and spend more compared to the other three. Nevertheless, they differed according to the family size, indicating that the parenting burden might have direct influence on the lifestyle of Korean older adults. Older adults without parenting burden and with high level of education and economic capacity were likely to show Friendly outgoes lifestyle. On the other hand, Daily-life survivor, Illness sufferer and Shelter seeker showed lower level of spending, indicating that for those lacking in economic capacity, urgent needs such as medical need or housing need dominates the lifestyle. The results call for adequate custom policies that best fit the needs of older adults.
Purpose: This study was to determine the mediator or moderator role of social support in the relationship between stress and depression among family caregivers of older adults with dementia. Method: Sixty nine family caregivers were randomly selected from health care centers in P city and a face-to-face interview was conducted using questionnaires from January to May of 2002. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression using SPSS program. Result: Family caregivers of older adults with higher dependency in ADLs and higher problematic behaviors, provided care to the older adults for a longer period of time, and perceived less social support reported higher depression. Social support showed mediating effects between stress and depression, while did not show moderating effects. Elderly dependency on ADLs and caregiving duration decreased perceived social support and decreased social support increased depression. Conclusion: To increase family and social support to the caregivers of more functionally impaired elderly, family education to increase emotional support and physical assistance to the caregivers and broader and flexible application of social support such as increasing accessibility to the elderly daycare service with lower price may prove beneficial.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that influence medication adherence and self-care among low-income older adults with hypertension. Methods: A sample of 297 low-income older adults with hypertension was recruited from June 30 to July 30, 2010. Data collection was done using a face-to-face interview with structured questions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and path analysis. Results: Subjective health status, duration of hypertension, number of drugs excluding antihypertensives, body mass index, knowledge about hypertension, sense of coherence, benefit, barrier, and self-efficacy were identified as significant predictors. Subjective health status and duration of hypertension, knowledge, depression, and self-care showed direct effects on medication adherence. Depression had the strongest direct influence on medication adherence. Body mass index, benefit, self-efficacy, and depression showed a direct effect on self-care. Sense of coherence was a strong predictor of depression which significantly influenced on medication adherence and self-care. Conclusion: For enhancing medication adherence and self-care, it is suggested that a psycho-education program reducing depression and increasing knowledge about hypertension should be provided into low-income older adults with hypertension.
Purpose: This study aimed to measure the relationship between the recognition of well-dying, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and repulsion-related nursing homes and community-dwelling older adults. Method: A descriptive survey was conducted among 505 community-dwelling older adults aged over 65 years. Data were collected from October 25 to November 30, 2023, and analyzed using a t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients with SPSS/WIN 26.0. Results: The results reveal that the subjects' recognition of well-dying was 2.30, HRQoL was 0.84, and repulsion-related nursing home was 3.31 points. Recognition of well-dying was significantly correlated with HRQoL (r=.10, p=.024). Conclusion: The results indicate that consumer-centered, well-dying education programs for community-dwelling older adults should be developed and applied continuously through effectiveness verification.
Purpose: This study was to examine the relation between diabetes and cognitive function in older adults. Methods: Eighty community-dwelling patients with diabetes and 506 subjects without diabetes were studied with cognitive function test. Cognitive function was measured by Full-scale IQ, Basic IQ, Executive IQ, Attention Function Index, Working Memory Index, Language Function Index, Visuospatial Function Index, Memory Function Index, and MMSE-K1. Results: In model controlling for education, the diabetic group showed significantly lower scores than the non-diabetic group in in Full-scale IQ (p=.012), Basic IQ (p=.034), Executive IQ (p=.014), Attention Function Index (p=.002), Working Memory Index (p=.037), and Memory Function Index (p=.043). The diabetic and non-diabetic groups that were matched for gender, age, and education showed similar differences in 7 out of 9 cognitive measures. The impairments of Full-scale IQ and Memory Function Index in the diabetic group were, respectively, 2.7 and 2.8 times greater than that in the diabetic group. Conclusion: These results showed that diabetes should be considered to a factor of cognitive impairment in older adults.
