  • Transmission electron microscopy has been used to investigate the microstructure of hot-pressed $TiB_{2}$. Thin foil specimens, prepared by conventional ion beam thinning, revealed many features which originated from the crystallographic anisotropy of hexagonal $TiB_{2}$. It was observed that in these specimens Fe-impurities are precipitated to form secondary Fe-rich phases at grain triple edges, in grain boundaries and sometimes in-grain. These Fe-rich precipitates were characterised by their coherence or semi-coherence to a favourably oriented grain at a grain triple edge or grain boundaries or to the matrix $TiB_{2}$ phase.

  • High quality GaN layer and $In_xGa_{1-x}N$ alloy were obtained on (0001)sapphire substrate using ammonia$(NH_3)$ and dimethylhydrazine$(DMH_y)$ as a nitrogen source by gas source molecular hem epitaxy(GSMBE) respectively. As a result, RHEED is used to investigate the relaxation processes which take place during the growth of GaN and $In_xGa_{1-x}N$. The full Width at half maximum of the x-ray diffraction(FWHM) rocking curve measured from Plane of GaN has exhibitted as narrow as 8 arcmin. Photoluminescence measurement of GaN and $In_xGa_{1-x}N$ were investigated at room temperature, where the intensity of the band edge emission is much stronger than that of deep level emission. In content of $In_xGa_{1-x}N$ epitaxial layer according to growth condition was investigated.

  • A positron camera, consisting of a pair of Anger-type scintillation detectors, has been developed for verifying the ranges of irradiation beams in heavy-ion radiotherapy. Images obtained by a centroid calculation of photomultiplier outputs exhibit a distortion near the edge of the crystal plane in an Anger-type scintillation detector. The images of a $\^$68/Ge line source were detected and look-up tables were prepared for the position correction parameters. Asymmetry of the position distribution detected by the positron camera was prevented with this correction. As a result, a linear position response and a position resolution of 8.6 mm were obtained over a wide measurement field.

  • The development and interaction of vortices over a delta wing with leading edge extension (LEX) was investigated through off-surface flow visualization using micro water droplets and a laser beam sheet. Angles of attack of $20^{\circ}$ and 24$^{\circ}$ were tested at sideslip angles of $0^{\circ}$, $-5^{\circ}$, and $-10^{\circ}$ The flow Reynolds number based on the main-wing root chord was $1.82{\times}10^{5}$. The wing vortex and the LEX vortex coiled around each other while maintaining comparable strength and identity at a zero sideslip. The increase of angle of attack intensified the coiling and shifted the cores of the wing and LEX vortices inboard and upward. By sideslip, the coiling, the merging and the diffusion of the wing and LEX vortices were increased on the windward side, whereas they were delayed significantly on the leeward side. The present study confirmed that the sideslip angle had a profound effect on the vortex structure and interaction of a delta wing with LEX, which characterized the vortex-induced aerodynamic load.

  • Circumventing problems lying in the conventional lithographic techniques, we devised a new method for the fabrication of nanometer scale metal wires inspired by the unique characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Since carbon nanotubes could act as masks when CNT-coated thin Au/Ti layer on a SiO2 surface was physically etched by low energy argon ion bombardment 9ion milling), Au/Ti nano-wires were successfully formed just below the CNTs exactly duplicating their lateral shapes. Cross-sectional analysis by transmission electron microscopy revealed that the edge of the metal wire was very sharply developed indicating the great difference in the milling rates between the CNTs and the metal layer as well as the good directionality of the ion milling. We could easily find a few nanometer-wide Au/Ti wires among the wires of various width. After the formation of nano-wires, the CNTs could be pushed away from the metal nano-wire by atomic force microscopy, The lateral force for the removal of the CNTs are dependent upon the width and shape of the wires. Resistance of the metal nano-wires without the CNTs was also measured through the micro-contacts definted by electron beam lithography. since this CNT-based lithographic technique is, in principle, applicable to any kinds of materials, it can be very useful in exploring the fields of nano-science and technology, especially when it is combines with the CNT manipulation techniques.

  • This paper deals with the development of an innovative distributed construction system based on smart prefabricated concrete elements for the real-time condition assessment of civil infrastructure. So far, two reduced-scale prototypes have been produced, each consisting of a $0.2{\times}0.3{\times}5.6$ m RC beam specifically designed for permanent instrumentation with 8 long-gauge Fiber Optic Sensors (FOS) at the lower edge. The sensing system is Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)-based and can measure finite displacements both static and dynamic with a sample frequency of 625 Hz per channel. The performance of the system underwent validation in the laboratory. The scope of the experiment was to correlate changes in the dynamic response of the beams with different damage scenarios, using a direct modal strain approach. Each specimen was dynamically characterized in the undamaged state and in various damage conditions, simulating different cracking levels and recurrent deterioration scenarios, including cover spalling and corrosion of the reinforcement. The location and the extent of damage are evaluated by calculating damage indices which take account of changes in frequency and in strain-mode-shapes. The outcomes of the experiment demonstrate how the damage distribution detected by the system is fully compatible with the damage extent appraised by inspection.

  • We describe the fabrication and characterization of a doubly clamped multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT). The device was assembled by an application of electric field in solution. The MWNT was clamped on end of metal trench electrodes in solution and deposited with additional platinum (Pt) on edge of electrode for firmly suspending the MWNT by focused ion beam (FIB). The MWNTs range of diameter and length were 100 to 150 nm and 1.5 to $2{\mu}m$, respectively. Electrical characteristics of fabricated devices were measured by I-V curve and impedance analysis. The mechanical deformation was observed by resistivity in high air pressure. Resonant frequency around 6.8 MHz was detected and resistivity was linearly varied according to the magnitude of air pressure. This device could have potential applications in nanoelectronics and various sensors.

  • The fracture toughness of two species, Pinus rigida MILL and Pinus koraiensis S. et Z. grown in Korea, was investigated by means of single edge notch beam specimen for the six principal systems of crack propagation in wood. The values of the fracture toughness for the LR and the LT systems ($K_{IC}$LR and $K_{IC}$LT) were found to be similar to each other and about 8 times greater than those for the other systems ($K_{IC}$RL, $K_{IC}$TL and $K_{IC}$TR) in both species. The results indicate that the characteristics of fracture toughness in three principal directions of wood (L, R, T direction) are quite different from those of bending strength for the responsible direction. To predict $K_{IC}$ value based on the variation of specific gravity, the experimental values of $K_{IC}$LT and $K_{IC}$TL were compared to the predicted values by published relationship between $K_{IC}$ and specific gravity. However, there were 10 to 25% differences between the former and the latter.

  • The structure of PSC box girder with FRP strut has a form of supporting the cantilever part in the widened upper slab by modifying the existing PSC box girder efficiently, and it is able to build an economical and aesthetically pleasing bridge as it reduces the size of the lower structure by reducing the self-weight of the upper structure. In this research, loading test of PSC Box Girder using full-scale mock-up was conducted and FEM analysis was performed. By comparing results, structural safety of the FRP strut and the upper slab following application of the strut in the PSC Box Girder Bridge were evaluated.

  • We proposed a novel electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) cell-embedded antenna structure for reducing the interference that radiates at the antenna edge in wireless access in vehicular environment (WAVE) communication systems for vehicle-to-everything communications. To suppress the radiation of surface waves from the ground plane and vehicle, EBG cells were inserted between micropatch arrays. A simulation was also performed to determine the optimum EBG cell structure located above the ground plane in a conformal linear microstrip patch array antenna. The characteristics such as return loss, peak gain, and radiation patterns obtained using the fabricated EBG cell-embedded antenna were superior to those obtained without the EBG cells. A return loss of 35.14 dB, peak gain of 10.15 dBi at 80°, and improvement of 2.037 dB max at the field of view in the radiation beam patterns were obtained using the proposed WAVE antenna.
