This study investigated pre-service elementary teachers' understanding of the planetary revolution movement of Mars and their explanatory models to show how the Sun-Earth-Mars system worked. An assessment item set using five celestial maps drawn from the Stellarium was designed to probe pre-service teachers' understanding of the prograde-retrograde motion of Mars. Among 23 participants, only four showed scientifically accurate understanding of Mars movement and drawing correct explanatory models for the planetary movement. Even the pre-service teachers who construed correctly prograde and retrograde motions of Mars showed a clockwise movement model due to their intuitive perceptions of Mars movement data from the celestial maps. Pre-service teachers with poor understanding of planetary movement also showed weak explanatory models due to their limited observation or lower spatial thinking. Although the planetary motion is not an easy topic for pre-service elementary teachers, it can be argued if the alternative approach, such as using appropriate observational data of a planet and changing the frames of reference between Earth-based view and Space-based view, is employed effectively in teaching planetary motion, pre-service teachers can reach the upper level of leaning planetary motion in terms of the planet's revolution.
The purpose of this study was to compare rock descriptors used by students in two different task contexts and to suggest the characteristics of a task suitable for learning of rocks. Twenty-four 3rd grade students were given descriptive and inferential tasks about three types of sedimentary rocks, and the rock descriptors used by the students were analyzed from a resources-based view (RBV) about students' conceptions. The result showed that the number of students using everyday descriptors to describe properties of the rocks and the frequency of using the everyday descriptors decreased in the inferential task. It was also revealed that the students using disciplinarily more appropriate descriptors were more likely to infer the process of rock formation in scientifically valid ways. By contrast, student inferences lacking scientific validity were mostly those that used everyday descriptors to express properties of the rocks. Based on these findings, it was concluded that inferential tasks would be suitable for student learning of rocks which is to be authentic to the essential features of earth science practices.

This work describes a preliminary investigation to a learning model based on cybernetics and radical constructivism. To achieve this purpose, main ideas of cybernetics, i.e., negative feedback, difference, self-regulation, equilibrium, and purpose-directed behavior was analysed under radical constructivism. Powers' model, which consists of hierarchically arranged negative feedback systems, is introduced into this work. This was based on the claim that living organisms behave to control perceptions. By adding the notion of scheme from the view of radical constructivism, a learning procedure, which consists of six steps, was suggested in this work.

High-resolution earth-observing satellites acquire substantial amount of geospatial images. In addition to high image quality, high-resolution satellite images (HRSI) provide unprecedented direct georegistration accuracy, which have been enabled by accurate orbit determination technology. Direct georegistration is carried out by relating the determined position and attitude of camera to the ground target, i.e., projecting an image point to the earth ellipsoid using the collinearity equation. However, the apparent position of ground target is displaced due to the atmosphere and satellite velocity causing significant georegistration bias. In other words, optic ray from the earth surface to satellite cameras at 400~900km altitude refracts due to the thick atmosphere which is called atmospheric refraction. Velocity aberration is caused by high traveling speed of earth-observing satellites, approximately 7.7 km/s, relative to the earth surface. These effects should be compensated for accurate direct georegistration of HRSI. Therefore, this study presents the equation and the compensation procedure of atmospheric refraction and velocity aberration. Then, the effects are simulated at different image acquisition geometry to present how much bias is introduced. Finally, these effects are evaluated for Quickbird and WorldView-1 based on the physical sensor model.

The purpose of this study was to compare the career awareness and social contribution consciousness between the elementary science gifted students and the general students. For this, survey was taken by 201 gifted students and 216 general students. Methods used are Cronbach alpha, frequency, percentage, independent t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results are as follows : 1. The gifted students have higher career awareness than the general students. The gifted students recognize their own interests, aptitudes and talents which they are concerned. 2. The gifted students have higher social contribution consciousness than the another. This shows that the gifted students have desire to be respected and positive view of social contribution. 3. There is a positive correlation between career awareness and the social contribution consciousness. According to the past studies, students' household economic status affect their view or grade which they get.. Based on these results, we suggest that a development of educational program for career awareness and social contribution consciousness which can improve gifted students' social responsibility consciousness is necessary.
Retaining walls with reinforced earth have been constructed around the world. The use of reinforced earth is a recent development in the design and construction of earth-retaining structure. It is believed that reinforced retaining wall has some advantages which make construction quite simple basically. It wilt take short construction time relatively, comparing, fur example with reinforced-concrete retaining wall. In addition, low price and easy construction will be good attractive points in practical point of view. In this study, five field-tests monitoring data for lateral pressures on geogrid-reinforced retaining wall have been compiled and evaluated. Based on field-tests it is found that horizontal displacements of the facing was measured to be about 0.19∼0.76% and that the maximum tensile strains of reinforcement was evaluated to be about 0.66∼1.98%. The maximum tensile strains, measured from each site, do not reach 5% of the practical allowable strain of the geogrid. And also it is found that the lateral pressure distributions of reinforced-earth retaining wall are close to a trapezoid shape like a flexible retaining wall system, instead of a theoretical triangular shape.
This thesis aims to provide an analytical basis for existing or new prescriptions based on the theory for properties and tastes of Korean oriental herbal medicines. To this end, prescriptions presented in the Various Changes in the Dominations of the Six Energies and their Relations with the Diseases of Plain Questions were analyzed based on the theory for properties and tastes of Korean oriental herbal medicines in Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine. This thesis focused on symptoms and prescriptions based on the theory for properties and tastes of Korean oriental herbal medicines, which were described in the Various Changes in the Dominations of the Six Energies and their Relations with the Diseases of Plain Questions with regard to the year when Taeyang is affecting the earth energy and the cold energy is partially over-abundant. Those symptoms and prescriptions originate from the theory of the five elements and six climates. The symptoms were analyzed from the perspective of physiology. The prescriptions were first analyzed based on the theory for properties and tastes of Korean oriental herbal medicines in Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine. Then, a mix formula of oriental medicines pursuant to those prescriptions was studied. Lastly, established prescriptions, which were in conformity with the above prescriptions, were selected. From the physiological point of view, symptoms with regard to the year when Taeyang is affecting the earth energy and the cold energy is partially over-abundant can be, based on the theory of the five elements and six climates, diagnosed as the symptoms from impaired heart due to excessive cold energy. Established prescriptions pursuant to prescriptions based on the theory for properties and tastes of Korean oriental herbal medicines can be broken down into the following: Cassia Twig, White Peony and Anemarrhena Decoction (Gyejijakyakjimotang); Rhemannia Bolus with Eight Herbs (Palmijihoanghoan); Back to the Left Pill (Joaguihoan); Bone-Strengthening Pill (Hojamhoan); Major Eum-Replenishing Pill (Daeboeumhoan). Therefore, symptoms of six kinds of weather presented in the Various Changes in the Dominations of the Six Energies and their Relations with the Diseases of Plain Questions can be analyzed from the physiological point of view. As a result, in addition to the methodology that analyzes existing prescriptions within the boundary of the theory for properties and tastes of Korean oriental herbal medicines in Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine, it is expected that a theoretical basis for new prescriptions can be provided by analyzing established prescriptions based on prescriptions from the theory for properties and tastes of Korean oriental herbal medicines.

Comparison between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM)/Precipitation Radar(PR) and the C-band doppler radar at Cheju, Kunsan and Pusan, operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA), is conducted for validation of the surface precipitation structure, and for calibration of KMA radar instrument. Data used in validation was selected for seven rain events in the south region of about $36^{\circ}N$ and at TRMM overflight in Korea, during the summer season of 2000. Quantitatively comparing radar reflectivities from two different platforms that have different view angles, bandwidths and frequencies is a challenging task. For the comparison, the precipitation patterns are projected on the same area for TRMM PR. Through the comparison, it is realized that the reflectivity from ground-based radar is under estimated, compared to TRMM/PR observations. We discuss that is underestimation may be produced by many factors(system performance, topography, etc).
