Scientifically Gifted Students' Conceptions of Nature of Science

  • The purpose of this study is to assess gifted students' conceptions about nature of science (NOS). Scientifically gifted students who are expected to be professionals in the future should possess an adequate understanding of NOS that if firm foundation for scientific career. 47 volunteers from the 8th grade gifted science program in Seoul National University Gifted Education Center participated to answer questions inquiring NOS conceptions. Their answers were analyzed and compared to different groups such as non-gifted students and younger gifted students. As a result, gifted students' understanding of NOS appeared to surpass that of non-gifted students in many aspects and it seemed that gifted students formed their NOS view in early ages. The relative weakness in their NOS conceptions was found in understanding of scientific enterprise. Their strong misunderstanding about obstacles that minority people would face in scientific enterprise was noticed, too. They admitted that there has been discrimination in scientific enterprise, but they wrongly believed that outstanding scientists cannot be affected by it. Further studies will be required to probe more.

Comparison on Positive Experiences about Science between Gifted and General Students in Middle School

  • In this study, we investigated the difference in the affective characteristics between science-gifted students and general students through the positive experiences about science (PES) index. We also explored ways to apply the characteristics of gifted classes suggeseted by the teachers of this study, which had a positive effect on science-gifted students, to general science classes. For this study, a PES survey was carried on middle school science-gifted students enrolled in the gifted education center in the central region and general middle school students in the same area who had no experience in gifted education. Based on the survey result, we conducted in-depth interviews with teachers, having teaching experience with both science-gifted and general students. The results revealed that science-gifted students showed a significantly higher PES index than general students in all five areas of PES. The area with the largest difference between the two groups was science-related self-concept and the smallest was science academic emotion. Teachers suggested ways to apply the characteristics of science-gifted classes to general science classes, such as organizing general science classes around inquiry activities, supporting class materials such as MBL or tablets, reconstructing the classes using materials reflecting students' needs, and changing the textbook content and narrative style, to induce students' interest and curiosity. Based on the study results, ways to enhance the PES through science classes for general students were proposed.

과학영재학생과 일반학생의 사고양식에 따른 지구과학 개념 비교 (Analysis on the Earth Science Concepts of the Gifted Science Students and Non-gifted students By the Type of Thinking Styles)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 Sternberg의 정신자치제 이론에 근거하여 영재학생과 일반학생의 사고양식의 차이를 조사하고, 사고양식 유형에 따라 두 집단이 가지고 있는 지구과학 개념을 비교 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 과학영재학교 1학년 120명과 일반계 고등학교 2학년 122명을 대상으로 총 65문학의 자기보고식 사고양식 검사와 서술형 지구과학 개념검사를 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 과학영재학생은 입법적, 사법적, 무정부제, 전체적, 진보적 사고양식이 우세하여 새로운 과제를 선호하고 자기 자신의 방식으로 문제를 해결하는 특성을 나타내었다. 반면에 일반학생은 행정적, 과두제, 보수적 사고양식이 우세하여 이미 짜여진 구조나 지침에 따라 문제를 해결하는 특성을 나타내었다. 사고양식 유형에 따른 지구과학 개념을 비교한 결과, 과학영재 집단과 일반학생 집단 모두 Type I 사고양식의 학생들이 Type II 사고양식의 학생들 보다 지질학 분야와 천문학 분야 공통적으로 심도 있고 복합적인 개념을 나타내었다.

과학 영재의 행동 특성 분석 (An Analysis on the Behavioral Characteristics of the Scientifically Gifted Students)

  • 본 연구에서는 과학영재학생들과 일반학생의 행동특성 차이를 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 과학영재 40명(남 27명, 여 13명)과 일반학생 38명(남 21명, 여 17명)을 연구의 대상으로 선정하고, 논리적 사고력, 과학탐구능력, 창의력, 지구과학창의력, 과학적 태도, 자기주도적 학습능력, 인지양식을 검사하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 과학영재들은 94.74%, 일반학생은 36.36%가 형식적 조작기에 도달해 있다. 둘째, 과학영재들은 일반학생보다 과학탐구능력 8.11점, 창의력 8.27점, 지구과학창의력 6.73점, 과학적 태도 10.79점, 자기주도적 학습능력 21.66점 높게 나타났다. 셋째, 과학영재의 약 70.0%와 일반학생의 약 60.53%가 장독립적인 사고를 하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 본 연구의 결과는 과학영재교육의 본질과 효율성 극대화를 위해 과학영재의 높은 행동 특성이 반영되어야 함을 의미한다.

초등 과학영재와 일반학생의 과학적 태도와 과학수업 만족도 비교 연구 (A Study on the Scientific Attitudes and Degree of Satisfaction about School Science Lessons of Science Gifted and General Students in Elementary School)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare scientific attitude and degree of satisfaction for school science lessons between science-gifted and general elementary school students. The results of analysis are as follows : 1. Scientific attitude of both groups appeared to be above average and especially science-gifted students demonstrated higher level of scientific attitude in all area. The characteristics of science-gifted tenacity, high motivation, and creativity are demonstrated in their scientific attitudes. 2. Degree of satisfaction about school science lesson for both groups was above average while science-gifted students showed higher degree of satisfaction than general students. 3. Correlation of scientific attitude and science lessons between science-gifted and general students were relatively low. Scientific attitude of science-gifted students are more dependent on other variables than those of science lessons.

좌우뇌 활용 선호도에 따른 지구과학 영재들의 문제해결방식에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Problem Solving Styles according to Left/Right Brain Preference of Earth Science Gifted Students)

  • 본 연구는 과학영재교육원의 지구과학영재들을 대상으로 좌/우뇌 활용 선호도에 따른 문제해결의 접근 방식에 관한 유형을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 지구과학 영재 16명을 대상으로 뇌활용 선호도를 알아보기 위하여 R/LCT, BPI를 실시하였고, 문제해결방식을 알아보기 위하여 S-CPST를 실시하였다. R/LCT에서 좌뇌 성향의 학생은 8명, 우뇌 성향은 7명, 중간 점수를 보인 학생은 1명이었다. BPI에서는 좌뇌 성향의 학생이 8명, 우뇌 성향은 8명이었다. S-CPST 에서 좌뇌 성향의 학생들은 먼저 구성 요소에 흥미를 갖고 그 특징을 탐색했다. 또, 숫자나 기호 등을 사용해 논리적이고 객관적으로 문제를 해결하는 반면 자신의 아이디어를 그림으로 표현하는 것을 어려워했다. 우뇌 성향의 학생들은 3단계문제해결방식을 나타냈다. 먼저 전체적인 형태에 관심을 갖고, 둘째, 각각의 구성요소 분석하고, 셋째, 이들을 종합하여 다시 전체로 조직하였다. 또, 직관적 패턴을 보고 문제의 해결 방법을 여러 가지로 제시하며 그림을 사용하여 구체화시켰다. 결과적으로 지구과학 영재들은 좌/우뇌 성향에 따라 서로 다른 방식으로 문제를 해결하였다. 따라서 보다 효과적인 지구과학 영재교육을 위하여 영재들의 좌/우뇌 성향을 고려한 교수학습방법이 요구된다.

과학 영재들의 성별에 따른 지구과학 영역 문제해결과정에 대한 비교 (Comparison on Problem Solving of Earth Science Area by Science Gifted Children's Gender)

  • This study was designed to explore problem solving process to earth science area by elementary science gifted children, which compared and analyzed the questionnaires and problem solving to earth science area by gifted Science education center, Seoul National University Of Education, The analyzed results showed difference by gender that in the science study level at the time of entrance to the gifted Science education center, male students was the highest in the middle school as 37.5%, and female students in the elementary 6th grade as 61.5%. And male students were investigated to do more precedent study than female students. Secondly, in the problem solving process of earth science related problems, males made most use of problem solving process area(30.3%), and females symbolizing (27.5%) area. Thirdly, comparison of reasoning technology in problem solving process by gender indicated that both sexes made the most use of analytical reasoning (male 62.0%, female 53.6%) to solve problems.

초등 영재학생과 일반학생들의 지구과학 영역에서 과학 글쓰기에 대한 분석 (An analysis of Scientific Writing about Earth Science Area by Gifted and Average Elementary School Students)

  • With five gifted and nine average elementary school students, this study attempted to make a comparative analysis on the characteristics of their scientific writings for earth science-related topics. The analysis found that all of the gifted students showed higher scores than the average in the writing sections of scientific nature, logical nature and creativity. Compared to the average scores, their creativity scores were far higher. By comparing and analyzing the predicates in the writings two groups wrote, I found that the gifted students used more sentences per topic than the average students. Both groups wrote the most numbers of sentences for Volcano-related topics. In the meantime, the gifted children used the least numbers of sentences for the related topics to atmospheric pollution and the average students did so for the related topics to fossils. By the analysis on the patterns of predicate, it was observed that both groups used material predicates most and verbal predicates least. As far as the second most used predicates are concerned, the gifted children used relational predicates and the average students used mental predicates.

고등학교 과학영재를 위한 지구과학 영역 해파 실험모듈 개발 및 활용 (Development and Application of the Sea Wave Experimental Module for the Gifted Students in High School Earth Science)

  • 본 연구는 과학영재들을 위한 지구과학 영역 해파 실험 모듈을 개발하고 그 활용가능성에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 과학영재들을 위한 해파 실험 모듈은 참여, 탐색, 설명, 정교화 및 확장 등 5단계로 구성된 특징을 가지고 있다. 실험 모듈의 교육적 효과를 알아보기 위하여 대전광역시교육청 지정 영재교육원 교육생으로 고등학교 10학년에 재학 중인 16명의 영재들을 대상으로 연구를 수행하였다. 수업 중의 연구보고서를 바탕으로 과학탐구능력과 사전 사후 검사에 의한 지식성취토의 변화를 분석하였다. 그 결과 변인 통제, 실험 설계, 실험과정 중의 도구의 선택과 활용 측면에서 효과적인 것으로 나타났으며, 지식 성취도에 있어서도 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과로부터 과학영재를 위한 실험 모듈의 활용은 과학성을 기르기에 매우 유의미하며, 과학영재들의 적합한 다양한 실험모듈의 개발과 활용이 필요하다고 하겠다.

초등 과학영재와 일반학생의 진로인식과 사회적 기여의식 수준 비교 (Comparison on the Consciousness Level of the Social Contribution and Career Awareness between Elementary Gifted Students and General Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the career awareness and social contribution consciousness between the elementary science gifted students and the general students. For this, survey was taken by 201 gifted students and 216 general students. Methods used are Cronbach alpha, frequency, percentage, independent t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results are as follows : 1. The gifted students have higher career awareness than the general students. The gifted students recognize their own interests, aptitudes and talents which they are concerned. 2. The gifted students have higher social contribution consciousness than the another. This shows that the gifted students have desire to be respected and positive view of social contribution. 3. There is a positive correlation between career awareness and the social contribution consciousness. According to the past studies, students' household economic status affect their view or grade which they get.. Based on these results, we suggest that a development of educational program for career awareness and social contribution consciousness which can improve gifted students' social responsibility consciousness is necessary.
