Analysis of Time Data in Japanese Astronomical Almanacs of 1885-1943

  • In this paper, we analyze time data (i.e., new moon time, sunrise and sunset times, twenty-four seasonal subdivision times, and so forth) in the Japanese astronomical almanacs between 1885 and 1943. During this period, two types of astronomical almanacs were published in Japan; Honreki (本曆; Formal Almanac) and its simplified version, Ryakuhonreki (略本曆). We use mainly the latter almanac for analyzing the time data. It is also known that Japan introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1873, adopted the standard meridian of $135^{\circ}E$ in 1888, and used Tokyo Observatory (東京天文臺; $139^{\circ}$ 44' 30" E and $35^{\circ}$ 39' 15" N) as the reference position of time data since 1891. We verify those facts and investigate the accuracy of time data in Japanese almanacs by comparing the data with the results of modern calculations. In this study, we present our findings.

Circular cylinder drag reduction using piezoelectric actuators

  • An active flow control technique based on "smart-tabs" is proposed to delay flow separation on a circular cylinder. The actuators are retractable and orientable multilayer piezoelectric tabs which protrude perpendicularly from the model surface. They are mounted along the spanwise direction with constant spacing. The effectiveness of the control was tested in pre-critical and in post-critical regime by evaluating the effects of several control parameters of the tabs like frequency, amplitude, height, angular position and plate incidence with respect to the local flow. Measurements of the mean static pressure distribution around the cylinder were used to estimate the pressure drag coefficient. The maximum drag reduction achieved in the pre-critical regime was of the order of 30%, whereas in the post-critical regime was about 10%, 3% of which due to active forcing. Furthermore, pressure fluctuation measurements were performed and spectral analysis indicated an almost complete suppression of the vortex shedding in active forcing conditions.

  • The alkaline phosphatase (K-ALPase) gene of Kluyveromyces fragilis has been cloned (1) and determined its base sequences (2) previously in our laboratory. When the K-ALPase gene was expressed in Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, it showed a constitutive activity in E. coli, and a derepressed activity in S. cerevisiae in phosphate-limited medium. Northem hybridization experiment was performed to elucidate the transcription level of the K-ALPase gene. Northern experiment showed that transcription level of K-ALPase gene in S. cerevisiae was higher in phosphate depletion, but it was higher in high phosphate medium than in phosphate limited medium in K. fragilis. The transcription initiation site of the K-ALPase gene was determined by primer extension analysis. It matched nucleotide position - 169 in relation to the putative trnslational start site.

  • For synthesis of benzastatin E, F and G analogues, the indole-2-carbaldehydes with or without substituents at C-5 position were prepared as key intermediates. Several synthetic attempts to achieve benzastatin E-G analogues were suggested using the indole-2-carbaldehyde intermediates.

  • The scattering problem by E-polarized plane wave with oblique incidence on a tapered resistive strip grating with infinite resistivity at strip-edges is analyzed by the method of moments in the spectral domain. Then the induced surface current density is expanded in a series of Ultraspherical polynomials of the zeroth order. The expansion coefficients are calculated numerically in the spectral domain, the numerical results of the geometricoptical reflection coefficient for the tapered resistivity in this paper are compared with those for the existing uniform resistivity. And the position of sharp variation points in the magnitude of the geometric-optical reflection coefficient can be moved by varying the incident angle and the strip spacing. It is found out that these sharp variation points are due to the transition of higher modes between the propagation mode and the evanescent mode.

  • In a rapidly changing business environment, the improvement of managerial techniques through IT utilization brings about remarkable increases in profitability and redesign of work process for better performances. IT innovation by electronic instruments such as ICT e-business provides accelerates forming inter-organizational information network and helps them benchmark the best practices of advanced organizations. A new shift of paradigm by e-business across all enterprises has turned the traditional aspects of inter-organizational competition and relationship into a form of collaboration. Collaboration enables business activities in parallel position among companies and facilitates cooperation between partner enterprises. Lately, the concept of 'Synchronization' is emerging beyond dimension of cooperation between networks, and the most concepts related to it are converging into 'Collaboration Networks'. This research observes a virtual organization as a form of collaborative networks, and measures the degree of virtualization of Korean collaborative organizations.

  • In this paper, we provide some fundamental properties and basic theoretical results of K-class-based dedicated storage policy in a unit load system assuming the constant-space assumption that the number of storage locations for a class is not the maximum aggregate inventory position for a class but the sum of space requirement for products assigned to the class. The main theorem is that there exists a (K+1) -class-based storage layout whose expexted single command (SC) travel time is not greater than that of a K-class-based storage layout, i.e, $E(SC^*_{K+1}){\leq}E(SC^*_K)\;for\;K=1,{\cdots}$, (n-1).

Crystallinity of yellow colored silkworm variety cocoons

  • The structure and properties of silk polymers (fibroin and sericin) can be satisfactorily controlled by choosing a suitable silkworm variety and, hence, this parameter (i.e., silkworm variety) has attracted increasing attention. A previous study reported that the crystallinity of white colored silkworm cocoons depends on the silkworm variety. In the present study, sixteen yellow colored silkworm variety cocoons were produced and their molecular conformation and crystallinity were investigated. The conformation of the silkworm cocoons varied with the silkworm variety. Most cocoons exhibited ${\beta}$-sheet conformation, although random coil and ${\beta}$-sheet conformations co-existed in some cocoons (e.g., 21 and D90). The crystallinity of the silkworm cocoons varied with the silkworm variety and the measurement position of the cocoon (i.e., outer surface or inner surface). However, the difference in the crystallinity indices of the outer and inner surfaces comprising the cocoons varied with the silkworm variety, but was <2% for all cocoons, except for MAL.

포항 로란-C(9930M) 이용 영일만 dLoran 측정 (dLoran Measurement in Yeongil Bay using the Pohang Loran-C (9930M))

  • dLoran과 ASF 데이터 맵 그리고 로란 데이터 채널은 eLoran 시스템의 중요한 3 요소이다. dLoran은 eLoran 기술의 핵심 기술로 ASF 보정을 통해 항법 정확도를 향상시키는 기술이다. 이러한 dLoran 보정을 통해 항만 접안(HEA)시에 8~20 m 정확도의 항법 성능을 얻을 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 로란 9930M 체인 중에 주국인 포항 송신국의 신호를 이용하여 dLoran 측정을 하였다. 영일만 해상을 대상으로 dLoran 기준국을 포항 호미곶 표지관리소에 설치하고 시험용 수신기를 흥환 해수욕장에 설치하여 dLoran 측정의 유효성을 평가하였다. 그 결과 표지관리소 dLoran 기준국의 TOA 측정 데이터와 흥환 시험국의 이용자 수신기 TOA 측정 데이터의 하루 동안의 차분 데이터는 약 10~30 ns (거리오차: 3~9 m) 이내로 일치하고 있어서 이 dLoran 측정 데이터로 이용자의 ASF 측정값을 보정하면 eLoran의 항만 접안에서의 항법 정확도를 만족할 수 있다.

전파간섭환경에서 UAV를 활용한 선박의 백업항법시스템 설계 (Design for Back-up of Ship's Navigation System using UAV in Radio Frequency Interference Environment)

  • 국제항로표지협회에서는 해양 분야에서 활용하는 백업항법시스템의 경우 항만 입출항시 10 m의 수평정확도를 보장하도록 요구하고 있다. 대표적인 해양분야의 백업항법시스템인 eLoran은 10 m 이내의 수평 정확도를 만족함이 증명되었지만, 수신환경에 따라 항법성능이 저하되기도 한다. 특히 수신 안테나 주변의 잡음 및 멀티패스 등으로 인한 요인으로 인해 특정 상황에서는 항법 자체가 불가능해지기도 한다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 환경에서 항만입출항 조건의 수평정확도 요구성능을 만족하기 위하여 UAV(unmanned aerial vehicles)를 활용한 선박의 백업항법시스템을 설계하였다. eLoran 신호 수신에 영향을 주는 주변 환경의 영향을 감소시키기 위하여 UAV에 카메라, IMU센서, eLoran 안테나 및 수신기를 장착하였으며, 선박의 안테나보다 높은 곳에서 카메라를 이용하여 랜드마크를 추적하고 일정 범위 내에서 eLoran 신호 수신과 위치 및 자세를 제어하도록 설계하였다. 선박에서는 UAV로부터 수신한 영상 및 자세 정보와 eLoran 신호를 이용한 선박기반 측위결과를 이용해 항만 입출항 시 수평정확도 요구성능을 만족할 수 있다.
