  • To improve poor dye uptake of safflower yellow colorants, cellulose fibers were pretreated with chitosan. The effect of chitosan pretreatment on the dyeability of safflower yellow colorants to cotton, ramie, and rayon was investigated in terms of dye uptake, color, and colorfastness. Irrespective of fiber types, dye uptake increased continuously with increase in chitosan concentration. Chitosan pretreatment improved dye uptake up to 5.6 times for cotton, 7.2 times for ramie, and 3.7 times for rayon. For cotton and ramie, the shade of dyed fabric changed YR color to Y color with increase in chitosan concentration. Dyed rayon fabrics showed Y color irrespective of chitosan concentration. Shades got darker and deeper with increasing chitosan concentration. Shades of chitosan pretreated fabrics were shifted differently depending on dyeing temperature within same fabrics. In common, the color of all dyed fabrics changed to YR at 50 and $70^{\circ}C$ while Y color at 30 and $90^{\circ}C$. V and C value decreased with increase in dyeing temperature and resulted in darker and duller color, in general. Light fastness was fair while washing fastness was poor. It was confirmed that ultrasonic dyeing method enhanced dye uptake more than 30% for cotton and ramie fabrics compared to the conventional automatic machine dyeing method. However, no difference in dye uptake between two dyeing methods was found for rayon.

  • The properties of biosorption of dye(Rhodmine B) was investigated to figure out the effects of temperature as a function of dye concentration and sludge concentration by the Langmuir and Lagergen adsorption model. It was found that the uptake capacity of biosorption was increased at low temperature. The Langmuir adsorption model was found suitable for describing the biosorption of the dye. The experimental results indicated that the dye uptake process followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics.

  • Dyeing and fastness properties of direct spun type PET microfiber fabrics have been investigated. The dye uptake of finer microfibers commenced at lower temperatures and showed faster rate of dye uptake. The build-up and wet fastness properties of disperse dyes on finer microfbers were relatively poor since the more dye was needed to achieve a given depth of shade due to the large surface area.

  • In order to obtain high dye uptake initially, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) filaments were dyed with C.I.Disperse Orange 3 and Red 1 in mixed solvents of tetrachloroethylene acidic solvent, ethyl alcohol and tetrachloroethylene basic solvent, DMF. The dyeing behavior in the mixed solvent of tetrachloroethylene and basic solvent, DMF, the initial uptake of disperse dyes increased rapidly. The shrinkage of PET increased when the solubility parameter values of PET fiber and mixed solvent approached graduately.

  • Dyeing properties of cotton fabrics with green tea colorants were studied by investigating the effects of dyeing conditions such as colorants concentration. pH dyeing temperature and time on dye uptakes effects of mordats on dye uptakes and color change and effects of cationizing agent on dye uptakes. And various colorfastnesses of dyed fabrics were evaluated for practical use. Green tea colorants showed low affinity to cotton and produced yellowish red color. Freundlich adsorption isotherm was obtained thus it is considered that hydrogen bondings are formed between colorants and cotton. Dye uptake was maximum at pH 5 and decreased as pH increased. Mordants especially Cu and Sn were effective for increasing dye uptake. Dye uptakes were improved remarkably by cationizing. Cationized cotton showed Langumuir adsorption isotherm indicating that ionic bondings were formed between colorants and cationized cotton. While mordanting did not affect lightfastness cationizing affected adversely. Colorfastness of cationized sample was generally inferior to that of mordanted samples.

  • This paper focuses on the application of a novel mathematical limit approach derived for K/S values in reactive dyeing of cotton fabrics. The relation obtained from Kubelka-Munk equation is used because the Kubelka-Munk equation is the basic relationship among fabric reflectance, fabric dye content and dyestuff characteristics. The limit approach derived in a former paper is applied to the laboratory dyeings and the dyeing behavior of some reactive dyes on cotton knitted fabric has been obtained. The results of the laboratory experiments are discussed using the new mathematical approach. When the actual K/S values obtained from the dyeings and the calculated K/S values derived by the limit approach are considered independently, it is observed that the limit relation is val id for low dye concentration applications. When the K/S values are calculated taking the K/S value of the initial dyeing concentration $(0.1\;\%\;owf)$ as the starting concentration by applying the result of the derived limit approach, the calculated K/S values fit with the ones obtained in actual dyeings. It is concluded that the novel approach presented in the paper can be used in calculating the K/S values when the initial dyeings at low dye concentrations are carefully carried out.

  • In this study, the efficacy of Amaranth(Amaranthus spp. L.) as a natural dye resource was investigated for wool fabrics. It is known that a large amount of flavonoid and anthocyanin colorant are contained in leaves and stems, as well as red flowers. The optimum condition of dyeing was 1.3% of dye concentration(o.w.b.) at 100℃ for 60 minutes, resulting the K/S value, 23.43 and R Munsell color on the wool fabrics. Al, Fe, Zinc and Titanium were used as a mordant. The mordant improved the dye uptake, regardless of the mordant type and mordant method. The pre-mordanting method was more effective than the post-mordanting method. Al pre-mordanted fabric showed the highest K/S, 30.02. Light fastness and washing fastness were high in grades 4-5 and 5, and rubbing fastness was good in grades 4 and 4-5 in dry condition, but low in grades 2-3 and 3 in wet condition. The dry cleaning fastness was excellent in all 5 grades. However, the alkaline perspiration fastness ratings were low in grades 2-3 and 3. The results show Amaranthus spp. L. colorant can be used as a functional natural dye for wool fabrics.

  • Silk fabric was printed with the reactive dyes (mono and di-chlorotriazinyl type) in order to investigate the change of adsorption and fixation by steaming time, viscosity of dyeing paste, and alkali concentration. It was found that the amount of adsorption and fixation of mono-chlorotriazinyl type dye increased with the increase of steaming time, while di-chlorotriazinyl type dye showed the maximum uptake at 20 minutes. The amount of dye uptake of each dye showed the maximum value at 340 cp of dyeing paste. The light fastness of each dye was poor but the washing fastness was excellent.

  • In the prior studies, we reported that the dye uptakes of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 on polyester fiber in hexane and cyclohexane were higher than those in the other solvents, as the number of carbon atoms of alkanes decreased, the dye uptake increased, and the logarithmic plot of the dye uptakes vs. the solubilities of the dye showed that the dye uptakes are inversely proportional to the solubilities. In this study, for Interpretation of dyeing behavior of C. I. Disperse Violet 1 on polyester in alkanes, the thremodynamic parameters of dyeing, such as standard affnity, heat of dyeing(enthalpy change), entropy change, diffusion coefficient, and activation energy of diffusion, were obtained from isotherms and dyeing rates at different temperature. As the number of carbon atoms of alkanes increased, the standard affinity decreased, but the heat of dyeing(enthalpy change) and the entropy change showed larger negative values. These results mean that as the number of carbon atoms of alkanes increases, the dye uptake decreases, but both the fraction of the dye molecules dyed at relatively highly aligned or compact region of polyester fiber and the regularity of dye aggregates in the fiber become increased. As the number of carbon atoms of alkanes increased, the diffusion coefficient decreased, but the activation energy of diffusion increased. In the alkane of larger number of carbon atoms, because the solubility of the dye is higher, the desorption rate of the dye is faster and the diffusion coefficient is smaller than those in the smaller alkanes. But the energy required to separate the dye molecules from the alkane molecules is much higher because the interaction between the alkane molecule and the dye molecule become strong with the number of carbon atoms.
