  • The relationships were studied between the range of hardening zone and the intensity of vacuum pressure in case of applying vacuum consolidation drainage method for soil improvement. A testing apparatus was made to measure the range of hardening zone varying the water content and the intensity of vacuum pressure for 3 different the highly compressible dredged clays(Gwangyang, Busan and Mokpo). In case of applying high vacuum pressure, the hardening zone is not spreaded as compared to low vacuum pressure because of the clogging of drainage and developed hardening zone near the drainage.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model based on a finite volume method was formulated to solve the shallow water equations and applied for evaluating irrigation and drainage characteristics at large-sized paddy fields. Manning roughness coefficient was calibrated using the observed inundating depths at drainage tests and used for validating the model with the results from irrigation and drainage test. The simulated results were in good agreement with the observed inundating depths.

  • It has been noted, in case of the apartments in collective form, the drainage noise from cleaning of toilet causes many problems in the basement and adjacent rooms, mainly hampering the pleasant housing environment. The problems are increasingly raised by civil complaints with the public offices. Therefore, if the drainage noise generates when wash out of toilet bowl is grasped how the characteristics change according to the sorts of drainpipe, it is considered that the establishment of an effective sound insulation countermeasure could be possible when a civil petition against the drainage noise of apartment house is submitted hereafter. On such viewpoint, this study measured and analyzed the characteristics of drainage noise per the type of drainage pipe, according to KS A ISO $1996-1{\sim}3$, with the horizontal branch pipe and riser pipes in the drainage noise experiment chamber which has the characteristics of the anechoic room. In the result, the pipe type with excellent noise reduction function. The result of this study is considered to become available as fundamental data, to take actions on reduction of drainage noise of the ceiling piping method.

  • This study was to present the method for estimating the horizontal coefficient of consolidation by using velocity method which was based on the Barren's equation. Horizontal drainage consolidation tests, including a radial drainage consolidation test, a cylindrical consolidation test, and a large soil box test, were performed to examine its validity. Using the velocity method, horizontal coefficient of consolidation was calculated and compared with lost method, √t method, Magnan & Deroy's method, Bergado's method.

  • The experiment was implemented to introduce the drainage electrode irrigation system as early as possible after transplanting in order to save the nutrient solution in a convenient way. Drainage electrode irrigation method was introduced 15, 19 or 22 days after transplanting after irrigation was firstly controlled by time clock. Time clock method was also treated as a control plot. Drainage electrode method could be adopted from 15 days after transplanting, 15 days earlier than the present introducing time. The growth and yield was better in treatments with drainage electrode method. Water and fertilizer use efficiency were the highest in the treatment of 15 days, the lowest in time clock treatment.

  • Channel network delineation from DEM (Digital Elevation Model) is a fundamental pre-process for hydrologic model application since it determines the drainage system in a watershed. This study aims to propose an effective and efficient channel network delineation process and assess the effects of DEM-based channel networks on the watershed drainage system. For these objectives, we applied two methods to generate the channel networks of the Jinan-cheon catchment with $18.28km^2$ from the 20 m resolution DEM: a widely-used area-threshold method and a slope-area threshold method based on the relationship between contributing areas and local slopes. The results showed that the area-threshold method led to unreliable drainage system, which did not satisfy geomorphological laws with respect to drainage density and source area representation whereas the slope-area threshold method provided acceptable results under the geomorphological laws. Our suggestions in this study can give valuable pre-processing information in DEM-based hydrologic modeling.

  • With the wide spread of direct current(DC) electric railroads in Korea, the stray current or leakage currents from negative return rails become a pending problem to the safety of nearby underground Infrastructures. The most widely used mitigation method for this interference is the stray current drainage method, which connects the underground metallic structures to the rails with diodes (polarized drainage) or thyristor (forced drainage). This method, however, inherently possesses some drawbacks such as an increase of total leakage torrents from rails, expansion of interference zone, etc. In order to resolve these drawbacks, we developed a rapid potential-controled rectifier and applied to a depot area where stray current inference is very severe. The effect of this method was analyzed from the field tell data and we suggest this method can be an excellent alternative to the drainage-bond-based mitigation methods.

  • Multi-regional water supply system, which installed for supplying multiple water demands, is characterized by large-sized, long-distance, tree-type layout. This system is vulnerable to long-standing service interruption when a pipe breaks is occurred. In this study, a numerical method is proposed to calculate drainage time that directly affects time of service interruption. To begin with, governing equations are formulated to embed the delayed drainage effect by the friction loss, and to resolve complicated connection of pipelines, which are derived from the continuity and energy equations. The nonlinear hydraulic equations are solved by using explicit time integration method and the Newton-Raphson method. The developed model is verified by comparing the result with analytical solution. Furthermore, the model's applicability is validated by the examples of pipelines in serial, in parallel, and complex layout. Finally, the model is utilized to suggest an appropriate actions to reduce the deviation of draining time in the C transmission line of the B multi-regional water supply system.

  • The newly designed mole drainage plower which is attached to tractor is tested for work capacity comparing with the pulling by man animal and winch. Besides. the effect of desalinization by the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland was observed. The results as obtained in this experiment are as follows: 1. The mole drainage plower of tractor attachment has higher work capacity by 3 to 5 times than that of winch 2. The suitable soil moisture content to carry out the layout of mole drains is from 21 to 25 percent. 3. The new design mole drainage plower requires th lowest cost as comparing with the other methods. 4. Carrying out the mole drainage in reclaimed tideland it is effective in desalinization from 2 to 3 times than the only use of irrigation water. 5. The reasonable depth and interval of mole drains may be 60cm and 3m respectively. 6. The desalinization by the mole drainage increases the yield of rice from 40 to 45 percent in reclaimed tideland.

  • Authors report a rare case of acute intracranial subdural and intraventricular hemorrhage that were caused by intracranial hypotension resulted from cerebrospinal fluid leakage through an unidentified dural tear site during spinal surgery. The initial brain computed tomography image showed acute hemorrhages combined with preexisting asymptomatic chronic subdural hemorrhage. One burr hole was made over the right parietal skull to drain intracranial hemorrhages and subsequent drainage of cerebrospinal fluid induced by closure of the durotomy site. Among various methods to treat cerebrospinal fluid leakage through unidentified dural injury site, primary repair and spinal subarachnoid drainage are well known treatment options. The brain imaging study to diagnose intracranial hemorrhage should be taken before selecting the treatment method, especially for spinal subarachnoid drainage. Similar mechanism to its spinal counterpart, cranial cerebrospinal fluid drainage has not been mentioned in previous article and could be another treatment option to seal off an unidentified dural tear in particular case of drainage of intracranial hemorrhage is needed.
