This study was carried out of investigate the effect of weed control methods on the growth of 'campbell early' grape at the vineyards which was divided into the 18 zone ($3.5m{\times}5.5m/zone$) in the grape research institute. It's investigated control effects, growth and quantity of grape and dominant weed of July~August by sprayed glufosinate ammonium and paraquat dichloride each 3 times, fabric covering, grass planting (Festuca myuros), mechanical weeding (3 times). The weed showed total of 16 species at the vineyards. Late-May to early growth stage of grape was dominated Chenopodium album and Trifolium repens, but to late growth stage of grape from mid-July was dominated Erigeron canadensis, Echinochloa crus-galli and Chenopodium album. Weed control effect of 10 day after treatment showed fabric covering 100%, grass planting (Festuca myuros L.) 95.3%, mechanical weeding 81.9%, glufosinate ammonium (3 times) 98.1% and paraquat dichloride (3 times) 90.4%, respectively. Growth of grape was higher herbicides treatment and mechanical weeding than others. Yield tended to be higher glufosinate ammonium (3 times) and paraquat dichloride (3 times) each 12.6 kg/tree, 12.3 kg/tree than others.
Purple ammannia (Ammannia coccinea Rottb.) is an exotic weed originated from North America. It was known to be a noxious weed in a rice paddy field for the competition with rice. We investigated its distribution and habitat types in Korea to obtain basic data for the management plan of this species. Although purple ammannia is currently not a dominant species in natural habitats, its nationwide distribution was found in our study. We categorized the types of its habitats as margins of rice paddies, abandoned paddy fields, riverine wetlands and reservoirs. Particularly, purple ammannia plants were frequently located along banks of irrigation channels that ran through rice paddies and surrounding wetlands. Because they mainly occurred along the direction of water flow, we considered that the plants have spread along water courses. A total of 69 vascular plant taxa was identified at the habitats of purple ammannia. The largest group of life form among purple ammannia population was therophytes, which indicates that purple ammannia mostly grow in the disturbed habitats.
Several rice herbicides were evaluated to determine the herbicidal efficacy on dry seeded paddy rice. The time of herbicide application was within 1 day after seeding(DAS), 18 DAS, and 40 DAS. Under the upland conditions 30 DAS(before permanent flooding) dominant weed species were Echinochloa sp., Digitaria sp., Leptochla sp., weedy rice and other several annual broadleaved weeds belonging to Cruciferae, but after flooding Echinochloa sp., Aeschynomene sp., Eleocharis kuroguwai, Cyperus sorotinus, Ludwigia prostrata, Aneilema japonica were dominat. Early application (1 DAS) of thiobencarb, pyrazolate/butachlor, or chlomethoxyfen/butachlor resulted in very good herbicidal efficacy only during the first 30 days, but not thereafter. Application of propanil+butachlor on 18 DAS did not control the late occurring weeds effectively. Application of bentazone/quinchlorac on 40 DAS successfully suppressed weed growth throughout the remaining rice growing season and showed similar grain yield as hand weeded plot. Weed growth reduced the plant height, panicle number, 1000-grain weight, percent ripened grains, and grain yield of rice by 7, 82, 19, 55 and 87% respectively. There was a positive linear relationship between weed weight and lodging index of rice.
This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of mulching materials on root growth characteristics and weed occurrence of Platycodon grandiflorum transplants (3 years old) in organic farming. After transplanting, roots were mulched with one of three mulching materials (biodegradable film, sawdust, or rice husks) or a control (no mulching). The average root diameter of all mulching groups was 28.1 mm, which was 5.1 mm thicker than the no-mulching treatment. Roots with the biodegradable film treatment were the thickest at 30.9 mm. Root length was the shortest, 22.0 cm, with rice husk mulching. The number of rootlets was the highest with film mulching (36.0 rootlets/root) and the lowest with no mulching. For root fresh weight, which directly affects yield, the average of treated and untreated roots was 100 and 56 g/root, respectively. The highest fresh weight was in the biodegradable film plot (130 g/root). The mulching treatment groups showed a weed inhibition effect compared with the no-mulching treatment. The dominant weeds with the no-mulching treatment were Setaria viridis and Digitaria ciliaris, and that with the mulching treatment was Setaria viridis. Average annual weed occurrence across all treatments was 72%. Weed occurrence was the highest with the no-mulching treatment ($125weeds/m^2$), and there were no weeds with the biodegradable film treatment.
This experiment was conducted to know the difference in weed population in the five cropping patterns kept same for six years from 1976 such as ricebarley, potato-rice, pea-rice, rice-rye, and rice-fallow. More and many weeds were growing in single cropping field than double cropping field. Dominant weed species in pea-rice and potato-rice cropping patterns were M. vaginalis and S. hotarui, M. vaginalis and P. distinctus. Coefficient of similarity of the cropping patterns between pea-rice and potato-rice appeared higher than single cropping system. However, pea-rice and rice-fallow cropping patterns showed low coefficient of similarity.
All types of weed community became dominant by Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.) Presl. as the nitrogen level increased. The importance value (IV.) of M vaginalis rapidly increased with increasing nitrogen level whereas the LV. of other weed species decreased. At the 10 $\times$ 10cm plant spacing, M. vaginalis was almost totally suppressed at all nitrogen levels. At the 20 $\times$ 20cm plant spacing, the degree of suppression declined with increasing nitrogen level. At the 30 $\times$ 30cm plant spacing, there was no suppression of M vaginalis at the highest nitrogen level. The yield obtained at the 10 $\times$ 10cm plant spacing when M. vaginalis was present was not significantly different from that obtained from the weed free plot for all rice cultivars while it was significantly reduced by M vaginalis competition at the 20 $\times$ 20cm and 30 $\times$ 30cm plant spacings. The difference in yield caused by M vaginalis competition was primarily due to a reduction in the number of panicles at all nitrogen levels. There was a high negative correlation between grain yield and weed weight at heading. The yield reduction due to weed competition varied depending upon the nitrogen level.
The climate change affects the growth and development of weeds as well as the outbreak of weeds. Especially, the occurrences of problematic paddy weeds due to climate change might cause the difficulties in weed control. This study therefore, investigated the current dominance and distribution of paddy weeds. As a result of the study on paddy weeds in northern Gyeonggi-do, there were total of 65 taxonomy groups including 23 family, 41 genus, 57 species, 7 subspecies and 1 variety. Among all the plants, 46 species were annual plants and 16 were perennial plants. Echinochloa crus-galli was the highest in importance analysis and the followings were in order of Ludwigia prostrate and Lemna paucicostata. The similarity of different paddy weeds in different regions observed through TWINSPAN analysis was distinguished by Fimbristylis miliacea, Rotala indica and Cyperus flaccidus. Regional differences shown in CCA analysis using weed species and soil environment revealed that Gimpo-si and Namyangju-si has difference soil and weeds, which are features that distinguished them from other regions. In northern Gyeonggi-do the result of paddy weed research showed the interregional difference not in dominant weeds but in distribution species.
A cultivar of taro(Colocasia antiquorum var. esculenta Engl.), Tosutoran was cultivated with planting density 60×30 cm at the field of Kwang-ju located in Kyeong-ki province in 1989. The purpose of this experiment was to attain the basic information about the pattern of weed occurrence and the effect of weed control on yield by various treatments in taro field. Ethalfluralin(35 EC), Clomazone(47.1 EC), Paraquat(24.5 Lq.) fb Ethalfluralin and Paraquat fb Clomazone were treated except for untreated plot and hand weeding plot. Weeds occurred were 15 species in 12 families, the dominant weed species were Echinochloa crus-galli, Potulaca oleracea, Acalypha australis in taro field. Weed control effects were higher in combination treatments than in single treatments so the yield was higher in combination treatment than in single treatment. Yield of untreated plot was reduced to 91.8% by comparison with that of hand-weeding plot.

Experiment was conducted to establish the weed control system on the paddy fields by investigating species, period and amount of weeds in Gangwon province. Four locations were selected for these experiments : West plain area, Chunchon(74m above the sea level), mid-mountainous area, Hongchon(300 m), high alpine area, Hoengsong(450m), and east sea area, Myungju(14m). Weed emergence was investigated 6 times from 10 days after transplanting to 60 days with 10 days interval. From the experiments stated above, the results were summarized as follows ; The identity of weed species was small in grass family, but broad-leaf family was numerous. Also the dominant weed species was generally the perenial weeds. The weed emergence was initiated from 10 days after translanting. The amounts of weed counted the most in Chunchon. A large number of weeds were emerged between 30-60 days after transplanting in Chunchon and between 40-60 days after transplanting in Hongchon and Hoengsong. Among agronomic characteristics affected by weed emergence during rice development, plant height was decreased by 2~4cm, panicle number by 1.3~2.9, spikelet by 3.7~7.5, ripening rates 3.3~6.5%, and milled yield by 12~17%, respectively.
Cover crop can be used to suppress weeds by competition for light and nutrient. Objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of legume cover crops on change of weed community in no-till corn cultivation. Two legume cover crops, hairy vetch and crimson clover were grown in the field, and succeeding corn was sown on 4 May, 2010. The distribution of weed was surveyed at 15 April, 1 June, and 20 August. At 15 April, the weed biomass in hairy vetch field was higher than in crimson clover field. The dominant weeds were Capsella bursa-pastoris L. and Stellaria aquatica L. in hairy vetch and crimson clover fields, respectively. At vegetative stage of corn, occurred weeds in hairy vetch and crimson clover fields were four and six species, respectively, while the weed was occurred with nine species in conventional. Also the dry weight of weed was decreased by 82 and 75% in hairy vetch and crimson clover fields compared to conventional. On the other hand, after harvest of corn, occurred weed in hairy vetch, crimson clover and conventional was five, four and five species, respectively. Dry weight percentage of occurred weed in conventional was 23.5%, and the value was higher than 13.8 and 14.7% in hairy vetch and crimson clover fields, respectively. Stellaria aquatica L. as winter annual weed only occurred in cover crop field during corn growing season. It is these possibilities that low soil temperature and light interception by soil cover of legume cover crop.
