  • Eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5) and docosahexaenoic (DHA, 22:6) acids of gull eggs were analyzed and the results are summarized as follows: 1. EPA and DHA were 2.25% and 4.35% in the total fatty acid of gull eggs. 2. Triglyceride fractions in the fatty acids had 0.56% in EPA and 1.59% DHA. 3. Diglyceride fractions contained 1.10% EPA and 1.97% DHA. 4. Phospholipid fractions had the most abundant amounts of 4.26% EPA and 8.13% DHA.

  • Both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) have attracted increasing attention since the first epidemiological report on the importance of n-3 essential fatty acids. Lipids in microbial cells play various biological roles and, consequently, much research has been carried out on their role in cell physiology. The lipid composition of microorganisms can exhibit considerable variations depending on environment. The effects of culture conditions, temperature (15, 20, 24, 28, 32 and $36^{\circ}C$), salinity (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 psu), pH (pH5, 6, 7, 8 and 9), rotation speeds (50, 100, 150 and 200 rpm), carbon sources, nitrogen sources and C/N ratio on the production of docosahexaenoic acid, fatty-acid profiles, and acids secreted to the broth culture by the oleaginous microorganism, Schizochytrium mangrovei (KCTC 11117BP), were studied. Temperature (initially $28^{\circ}C$), salinity (20 psu), pH (pH7), rotation speeds (100 rpm), organism fatty acids, and secreted acids in the broth were varied during cultivation of S. mangrovei. At pH 7.0, S. mangrovei was able to accumulate lipids up to 40% of its biomass, with 13% (w/w) DHA content. The monosaccharides glucose and fructose, and yeast extract were suitable carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The primary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid produced was docosahexaenoic acid.

Dietary Docosahexaenoic Acid Decreases Plasma Triglycerides with Mixed Effects on the Indices of $\beta$-oxidation

  • One known effect of long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids is their ability to decrease plasma triglycerides. However, identification of the specific n-3 fatty acids and the underlying mechanisms responsible for this change remains uncertain. This present study was designed to evaluate the effects of moderate levels of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (22 :6(n-3)) on modulating plasma triglyderides. Male CD-1 mice were maintained for 15 days on identical diets containing either docosahexahexaenoic acid ethyl ester(1.5%, w/w) or linoleic acid(18 : 2(n-6)) ethyl ester (1.5%, w/w) . Plasma triglycerides were 40% lower in the docosahexaenoic acid group than in the linoleic acid group. Hepatic carnitine palmitoyltransferase activity (a key regulatory enzyme for mitocondria $\beta$-oxidation) was not significantly different between the dietary groups. However, plasma acid soluble acylcarnitine levels (which increase with increasing $\beta$-oxidation )were significantly higher in the decosahexaenoic acid group. This data suggests that plasma triglyceride levels are lower in mice fed diets containing moderate levels of docosahexaenoic acid compared to linoleic acid, but this effect on plasma triglycerides is not modulated through an augmentation of mitochondrial $\beta$-oxidation.

대마(Carnnabis sativa L.)씨의 지방산 조성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Composition of Fatty Acids of Hempseed)

  • This investigation on the composition of fatty acids of hempseed through gas -chromatography analysis found the follwing results. Myristic acid and other ten materials were detected. And there was mainly composed of myristic acid 29.4%, Palmitoleic acid 16.2%, linoleic acid 14.9%, oleic acid 12.4%. It also showed that heptadecanoic acid 10.8%, erucic acid 0.5%, docosahexaenoic acid 0.3% and essential fatty acid were contained 11.9% between them. As stearic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, linoleic acid and arachidonic acid made lower cholesterol level in body, they will help prevention of senile disease with the oil d hemp seed.

A Kinetic Study of Fatty Acid Composition of Embryos, Oviductal and Uterine Fluids in the Rabbit

  • The different developmental stage embryos and oviductal and uterine fluids of rabbit were analyzed by gas chromatography. Myristic (C 14:0), palmitic (C 16:0), palmitoleic (C 16:1), stearic (C 18:0), oleic (C 18:1), linoleic (C 18:2), linolenic (C 18:3), arachidic (C 20:0), arachidonic (C 20:4), docosahexaenoic (C 22:6) and lignoceric (C 24:0) acids were the common fatty acid constituents with little exception. In most of the samples palmitic, oleic, linoleic and arachidonic acids were observed in high concentration. Moreover, linoleic, linolenic and arachidonic acids were the three poly-unsaturated fatty acids in both type sample except day-1 oviductal fluids. Similarly, in both day-1 and day-2 oviductal and uterine fluids myristic, palmitoleic, stearic, linolenic, arachidic and docosahexaenoic acids were in less composition or undetected.

황소개구리에서 추출한 지방의 지방산 조성 (Fatty Acid Compositions of Lipids Extracted from Bullfrogs)

  • 본 연구에서는 황소개구리(Rana catesbeiana Shaw)가 불포화지방산의 주요 공급원이 될 수 있다는 점에 착안하여, 국내에서 서식하고 있는 황소개구리에서 지방을 추출하여 지방산 조성을 분석하였다. 황소개구리의 다리와 몸통에는 1%(w/w)이하의 지방이 함유되어 있었으며, 계절에 따른 변화를 관찰할 수 없었다. 황소개구리 다리에서 분리한 지방에는 26~31%(w/w) 포화지방산, 16~24% 모노엔산, 30~40% 고도불포화지방산이 함유되어 있었으며, 몸통에서 분리한 지방에는 23~28% 포화지방산, 29~44% 모노엔산, 16~30% 고도불포화지방산이 함유되어 있었다. 황소개구리에서 추출한 지방의 주요 지방산은 palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid이었다. 다리에서 분리한 지방에는 3~8% eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA)와 6~10% docosahexaenoic acid(DHA)가 함유되어 있었으며, 몸통에서 분리한 지방에는 1~3% EPA 와 DHA가 각각 함유되어 있었다.

소나무 및 잣나무의 잎과 꽃가루의 지방산 조성 (Fatty Acid Composition of Total Lipids from Needles and Pollen of Korean Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis)

  • The needles and pollen of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were studied for their lipid contents and fatty acid composition. The total lipid contents in needles of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were 5.0 and 4.5%, whereas in pollen of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis 3.5 and 5.6%, respectively. Twenty-four fatty acids ranged from lauric acid to docosahexaenoic acid(22:6${\omega}$3) were identified in the needle lipids. In needles, linolenic acid and palmitic acid were the major fatty acids. The needles of Pinus densiflora showed higher proportions of docosahexaenoic acid and 5-olefinic nonmethylene-interrupted polyenoic acids than those in the Pinus koraiensis. Twenty fatty acids ranged from myristic acid to lignoceric acid were identified in the pollen lipids. Linoleic acid was the major fatty acid in the pollen followed by oleic and palmitic acid. The fatty acid profile of pollen of Pinus densiflora was similar to those of the Pinus koraiensis pollen lipids.

Eicosapentaenoic and Docosahexaenoic Acids Reduce Arachidonic Acid Release by Rat Kidney Microsomes

  • The effects of eicosapentaenoic (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA, 22:6n-3) on the phospholipase $A_2$ ($PLA_2$)-mediated release of arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) were studied in kidney microsomes from rats fed diets containing sunflower oil (SO) or fish oil (FO) concentrate for 11 months. The amounts of AA released by the endogenous $PLA_2$ enzyme were significantly lower by 38% in the FO, compared to the SO-fed rats (23.2 nmol versus 60.7 nmol AA released/mg protein/h in the FO- and SO-treated groups, respectively). The FO-derived microsomes released less linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6) and adrenic acid (22:4n-6), but larger amounts of the n-3 fatty acids, including EPA, DHA, docosapentaenoic acid (DPA, 22:5n-3), and 20:4n-3 than the SO-derived microsomes. A similar replacement of the AA and adrenic acid with the n-3 fatty acids including EPA and DHA was also observed in the microsomal phospholipid fraction from the FO-fed rats relative to the SO-treated group. The results suggest that the $PLA_2$-mediated release of AA is reduced and that of EPA is increased in compensation for AA decline in kidney microsomes from FO-fed rats (0.7 nmol EPA/mg protein/h versus 22.7 nmol EPA/mg protein/h for the SO and FO-treated groups). Replacement of the n-6 with n-3 fatty acids may explain the reduced synthesis of the AA-derived prostaglandins and the concomitant rise in the EPA-derived prostaglandins observed in kidneys of FO-treated rats.

가열 및 건조방법이 새우의 지방질 함량과 중성지방질 조성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Cooking and Drying Methods on the Lipid Content and Neutral Lipid Composition of Shrimp)

  • 가열처리 및 건조방법이 새우의 지방질 함량과 중성지방질에 미치는 영향을 밝히고자 하였다. 생새우의 총지방질 함량은 건물기준으로 6.0%였으며, 가열 및 건조방법에 따라 총지방질의 함량은 유의적인 변화가 없었다. 생새우의 중성, 당 및 인지방질의 함량비는 각각 36.8:21.5:41.7% 이었고 동결건조한 것은 열풍건조한 것보다 중성시방질의 함량이 유의적으로 많은 반면에 당 및 인지방질의 함량은 적었다. 중성지방질의 주요성불은 triglyceride, free sterol, free fatty acid 및 esterified sterol이었으며, 동결건조한 것은 열풍건조한 것보다 triglyceride 함량은 유의적으로 많았고 free fatty acid 함량은 적었는데, 이는 열풍건조중 triglyceride가 분해된 것으로 생각되었다. 생새우의 총지방질의 구성 주요지방산은 palmitoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid 및 docosahexaenoic acid이었고, 중성지방질의 구성 주요 지방산은 palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid 및 docasahexaenoic acid이었다.
