Shallow footings usually belonged to the category of thick plate structures. For accurate analysis of thick plates, the contribution of out-of-plane components of the stress tensor should be considered in the formulation. Most of the available shallow footing models are based on the classical plate theories, which usually neglect the effects of the out-of-plane stresses. In this study, a mixed-field plate finite element model (FEM) is developed for the analysis of shallow footings rested on soil foundations. In addition to displacement field variables, the out-of-plane components of the stress tensor are also assumed as a priori unknown variables. For modeling the interaction effect of the soil under and outside of the shallow footings, the modified Vlasov theory is used. The tensionless nature of the supporting soil foundation is taken into account by adopting an incremental, iterative procedure. The equality requirement of displacements at the interface between the shallow footing and soil is fulfilled using the penalty approach. For validation of the present mixed FEM, the obtained results are compared with the results of 3D FEM and previous results published in the literature. The comparisons show the present mixed FEM is an efficient and accurate tool for solving the problems of shallow footings rested on subsoil.
This research concentrates on the effects of distributions and volume fractions of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on the nonlinear bending behavior of deep cylindrical panels reinforced by functionally graded carbon nanotubes under thermo-mechanical loading, hitherto not reported in the literature. Assuming the effects of shear deformation and moderately high value of the radius-to-side ratio (R/a), based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and von Karman type of geometric nonlinearity, the governing system of equations is obtained. The analytical solution of field equations is carried out using the Ritz method together with the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The effects of radius-to-side ratio, temperature change, and boundary conditions on the nonlinear response of the functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite deep cylindrical panel (FG-CNTRC) are investigated. It is concluded that, among the five possible distribution patterns of CNT, FG-V CNTRC deep cylindrical panel is strongest with the highest bending moment and followed by UD, X, O, and Ʌ-ones. Also, considering the present deep cylindrical panel formulation increases the accuracy of the results. Hence, according to the noticeable amount of R/a in FG-CNTRC cylindrical panels, it is mandatory to apply strain-displacement relations of deep cylindrical panels for bending analysis of FG-CNTRC which certainly is desirable for industrial application.

Effect of thickness stretching on mechanical behavior of functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) laminated nanoplates resting on elastic foundation is analyzed in this paper using a novel quasi 3D higher-order shear deformation theory. The key feature of this theoretical formulation is that, in addition to considering the thickness stretching effect, the number of unknowns of the displacement field is reduced to four, and which is more than five in the other models. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are the reinforced elements and are distributed with four power-law functions which are, uniform distribution, V-distribution, O-distribution and X-distribution. To cover various boundary conditions, an analytical solution is developed based on Galerkin method to solve the governing equilibrium equations by considering the nonlocal strain gradient theory. A modified two-dimensional variable Winkler elastic foundation is proposed in this study for the first time. A parametric study is executed to determine the influence of the reinforcement patterns, power-law index, nonlocal parameter, length scale parameter, thickness and aspect ratios, elastic foundation, thermal environments, and various boundary conditions on stresses, displacements, buckling loads and frequencies of the CNTRC laminated nanoplate.
In this research, an earthquake-resistant structural system consisting of a pin-connected steel frame and a bracing with metallic fuses is proposed. Contrary to the conventional braced frames, the main structural elements are deemed to remain elastic under earthquakes and the seismic energy is efficiently dissipated by the damper-braces with an amplification mechanism. The superiority of the proposed damping system lies in easy manufacture, high yield capacity and energy dissipation, and an effortless replacement of damaged fuses after earthquake events. Furthermore, the stiffness and the yield capacity are almost decoupled in the proposed damper-brace which makes it highly versatile for performance-based seismic design compared to most other dampers. A special attention is paid to derive the theoretical formulation for nonlinear behavior of the proposed damper-brace, which is verified using analytical results. Next, a direct displacement-based design procedure is provided for the proposed system and an example structure is designed and analyzed thoroughly to check its seismic performance. The results show that the proposed system designed with the provided procedure satisfies the given performance objective and can be used for developing highly efficient low-damage structures.

Effect of thickness stretching on free vibration, bending and buckling behavior of carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) laminated nanoplates rested on new variable elastic foundation is investigated in this paper using a developed four-unknown quasi-3D higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The key feature of this theoretical formulation is that, in addition to considering the thickness stretching effect, the number of unknowns of the displacement field is reduced to four, and which is more than five in the other models. Two new forms of CNTs reinforcement distribution are proposed and analyzed based on cosine functions. By considering the higher-order nonlocal strain gradient theory, microstructure and length scale influences are included. Variational method is developed to derive the governing equation and Galerkin method is employed to derive an analytical solution of governing equilibrium equations. Two-dimensional variable Winkler elastic foundation is suggested in this study for the first time. A parametric study is executed to determine the impact of the reinforcement patterns, nonlocal parameter, length scale parameter, side-t-thickness ratio and aspect ratio, elastic foundation and various boundary conditions on bending, buckling and free vibration responses of the CNTRC plate.
A mathematical model and its computer solution program were proposed to analyze the motion of contact lenses which are being subject to lid-blinking. The equation was derived by incorporating an acceleration induced lid's force exerting on the contact lens, the viscous damping resistance in the tear layer beneath the lens and the sliding frictional force between the lid and the contact lens surface into the formulation of differential equation describing the vibration. The model predicts the time-dependent displacement from the equilibrium postion during/after the blinking. During the blinking, as the time for the completion of one cycle of blinking decreases the off-the-equilibrium displacement of contact lens increases while the decrease of diameter in the contact cause the opposite effect. It is found that lid pressure exerting on the lens cause an insignificant lens displacement from the equilibrium position. After blinking the frequency of damped oscillation of contact lens decreases as the diameter of lens increases, due to the incresed surface while the reduced blinking time does not cause a significant frequency change. This is because that driving force for the contact lens movement posterior to blinking is the capillary-induced force not the lid force.

Analysis of elasto-dynamic deformation of flexible linkage mechanism is conducted using the finite element method. The equations of motion of the system are derived from the static structural problem in which dynamic inertia, gravitational and driving forces are treated as external loads. Linear spring model is included in the formulation of equation of motions to represent the effects of deformation of elastic bearings of revolute joints on the system behavior. A computer program is constructed and applied to analyze a specific crank-lever 4-bar mechanism. The algorithm of the program is as follows. First, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the system are calculated by solving the eigenproblem of the mechanism system which can be considered as a static structure by assuming the input shaft (crank shaft) to be fixed at any given configuration of mechanism. And finally, the elasto-dynamic deformation of the whole system is obtained using mode superposition method for the case of constant input speed. The effect of geometric stiffness on the mechamism is included in the program with the axial forces of links obtained through the quasi-static displacement analysis. It is found that the geometric stiffness exerts an important effect upon the elasto-dynamic behavior of the flexible linkage mechanism. Elastic deformation of bearing lowers the natural frequencies of the system, resulting smaller elastic displacement at the mid-point of the links and bigger elestic displacement at the ends of the links than rigid bearing. The above investigation of flexible linkage mechanism shows that the effects of the elastic deformation of bearing on the mechanism should be considered to design the mechanism which satisfies more preciously the purpose and the condition of design.

Nonlinear analysis of RC containment structure under thermal load and pressure is presented to trace the behaviour after an assumed LOCA. The temperature distribution varying with time through the wall thickness is determined by transient finite element analysis with the two time level scheme in time domain. The layered shell finite elements are used to represent the containment structures in nuclear power plants. Both geometric and material nonlinearities are taken into account in the finite element formulation. The constitutive relation of concrete is modeled according to Drucker-Prager yield criteria in compression. Tension stiffening model is used to represent the tensile behaviour of concrete including bond effect. The reinforcing bars are modeled by smeared layer at the location of reinforcements accounting elasto-plastic axial behaviors. The steel liner model under Von Mises yield criteria is adopted to represent elastic-perfect plastic behaviour. Geometric nonlinearity is formulated to consider the large displacement effect. Thermal stress components are determined by the initial strain concept during each time step. The temperature differential between any two consecutive time steps is considered as a load incremental. The numerical results from this study reveal that nonlinear temperature gradient based on transient thermal analysis will produces excessive large displacement. Nonlinear behavior of containment structures up to ultimate stage can be traced reallistically. The present study allows more realistic analysis of concrete containment structures in nuclear power plants.

This Paper describes a crack scattering model for SH wave based on the boundary integral equation(BIE) method, where the fundamental unknown is crack opening displacement(COD). When a time harmonic plane wave was incident on a 2-D isolated crack (slit) of width 2a, the COD distributions were numerically calculated as a function of ka. The calculated COD agreed well with results obtained with other methods. The far-field scattering amplitude, which completely characterizes the flaw response, was calculated in two ways. The Kirchhoff approximation and the BIE-COD exact formulation were compared in terms of incidence angle and frequency ka in a pulse-echo mode. Maximum response was obtained for both methods at the specular reflection direction. Away from the specular direction, the Kirchhoff approximation becomes less accurate. The time domain crack response was also calculated using a band-limited spectrum of center frequency 10 MHz. At oblique incidence to the crack both methods show the existence of an antisymmetric flash points occurring from the crack edge. The Kirchhoff approximation provides an exact time interval between flash points, although it unrealistically gives the same amplitude.

Recent investigation into the integrity of nuclear containment buildings has highlighted the importance of developing an elaborate diagnostic method to evaluate the distribution and size of cavities inside concrete walls. As part of developing such a method, this paper presents a finite element approach to modeling elastic waves propagating in the containment building walls of a nuclear power plant. We introduce a perfectly matched layer (PML) wave-absorbing boundary to limit the large-scale nuclear containment wall to the region of interest. The formulation results in a semi-discrete form with symmetric damping and stiffness matrices. The transient elastic wave equations for a mixed unsplit-field PML were solved for displacement and stresses in the time domain. Numerical results show that the sensitivity of displacement, velocity, acceleration, and stresses is large depending on the size and location of the cavity. The dynamic response of the wall slightly differs depending on the existence of the containment liner plate. The results of this study can be applied to a full-waveform inversion approach for characterizing cavities inside a containment wall.
