  • This paper presents a simple identification method for discrete-time low-order model of unknown delay process from pulse response. The key idea is to find the parameters of the model such that the first N moments of the unknown process and the model are equal. We first show that the k-th moment of a process can be determined by the moments of the input and output. The parameters and delay are estimated separately. It is shown that for a given delay, the parameters of the low-order model can be determined by solving linear equations in a matrix form. Delay of the model is estimated such that the integral of the absolute errors (IAE) of the candidate models with possible delays minimizes. The illustrative example shows that the proposed method can directly identify low-order models without order reduction process from a single pulse response.

  • This study's primary aim is to check the existence of a representative volume element for granular materials and determine the link between the properties (responses) of macro structures and the size of the discrete particle assembly used to represent a constitutive relation in a two-scale model. In our two-scale method the boundary value problem on the macro level was solved using finite element method, based on the Cosserat continuum; the macro stresses and modulus were obtained using a solution of discrete particle assemblies at certain element integration points. Meanwhile, discrete particle assemblies were solved using discrete element method under boundary conditions provided by the macro deformation. Our investigations focused largely on the size effects of the discrete particle assembly and the radius of the particle on macro properties, such as deformation stiffness, bearing capacity and the residual strength of the granular structure. According to the numerical results, we suggest fitting formulas linking the values of different macro properties (responses) and size of discrete particle assemblies. In addition, this study also concerns the configuration and displacement fluctuation of discrete particle assemblies on the micro level, accompanied with the evolution of bearing capacity and deformation on the macro level.

  • In this paper, we propose extending proportional hazards frailty models to allow a discrete distribution for the frailty variable. Having zero frailty can be interpreted as being immune or cured. Thus, we develop a new survival model induced by discrete frailty with zero-inflated power series distribution, which can account for overdispersion. This proposal also allows for a realistic description of non-risk individuals, since individuals cured due to intrinsic factors (immunes) are modeled by a deterministic fraction of zero-risk while those cured due to an intervention are modeled by a random fraction. We put the proposed model in a Bayesian framework and use a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for the computation of posterior distribution. A simulation study is conducted to assess the proposed model and the computation algorithm. We also discuss model selection based on pseudo-Bayes factors as well as developing case influence diagnostics for the joint posterior distribution through ${\psi}-divergence$ measures. The motivating cutaneous melanoma data is analyzed for illustration purposes.

  • In this paper, we present a 3D thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled discrete beam lattice model of structure built of the nonisothermal saturated poro-plastic medium subjected to mechanical loads and nonstationary heat transfer conditions. The proposed model is based on Voronoi cell representation of the domain with cohesive links represented as inelastic Timoshenko beam finite elements enhanced with additional kinematics in terms of embedded strong discontinuities in axial and both transverse directions. The enhanced Timoshenko beam finite element is capable of modeling crack formation in mode I, mode II and mode III. Mode I relates to crack opening, mode II relates to in-plane crack sliding, and mode III relates to the out-of-plane shear sliding. The pore fluid flow and heat flow in the proposed model are governed by Darcy's law and Fourier's law for heat conduction, respectively. The pore pressure field and temperature field are approximated with linear tetrahedral finite elements. By exploiting nodal point quadrature rule for numerical integration on tetrahedral finite elements and duality property between Voronoi diagram and Delaunay tetrahedralization, the numerical implementation of the coupling results with additional pore pressure and temperature degrees of freedom placed at each node of a Timoshenko beam finite element. The results of several numerical simulations are presented and discussed.

  • The subject of this work is the complex discrete systems simulation special features with the aid of dynamic graph models. The proposed simulation technique allows to determine the ways for tasks solutions in terms of discrete systems analysis and synthesis of various complication: one-dimensional and multidimensional, steady and unstable, with the pulse elements abnormal operating mode and others. Often complex control systems analysis and synthesis task solutions, via classical approach comes out to be insolvent, because of the computational problems. The application of graph models allows to perform clear and strict characterization and computer procedures automation. The optimal controls synthesis algorithm presented in this paper, transferring the discrete system from target initial state to target final state within the minimum time, allows to consider the zero initial conditions systems, with the initial potential energy, with the control actions limitations and complex pulse elements operating mode.

  • This paper deals with the design technique of the controller for the discrete system control using Extended Safe Petri Net which is deduced from Petri Net as its subclass with a specific constraint and which is introduced to develop the design and analysis for the discrete systems. First, we propose a construction matrix suitable for the discrete systems that represent the marking flows which are the dynamic behavior of the discrete systems. Next, we develop a method that can design the controller for the discrete system control by analyzing the proposed construction matrix into the incidence matrix of Extended Safe Petri Net. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is shown by using the incidence matrix and matrix equation of Extended Safe Petri Net model.

  • Design, Simulation and experimental analysis of closed loop time domain based Discrete PWM buck-boost converter are described. To improve the transient response and dynamic stability of the proposed converter, Discrete PID controller is the most preferable one. Discrete controller does not require any precise analytical model of the system to be controlled. The control system of the converter is designed using digital PWM technique. The proposed controller improves the dynamic performance of the buck-boost converter by achieving a robust output voltage against load disturbances, input voltage variations and changes in circuit components. The converter is designed through simulation using MATLAB/Simulink and performance parameters are also measured. The discrete controller is implemented, and design goal is achieved and the same is verified against theoretical calculation using LabVIEW.

  • In this paper, a stabilized-penalized collocated finite volume (SPCFV) scheme is developed and studied for the stationary generalized Navier-Stokes equations with mixed Dirichlet-traction boundary conditions modelling an incompressible biological fluid flow. This method is based on the lowest order approximation (piecewise constants) for both velocity and pressure unknowns. The stabilization-penalization is performed by adding discrete pressure terms to the approximate formulation. These simultaneously involve discrete jump pressures through the interior volume-boundaries and discrete pressures of volumes on the domain boundary. Stability, existence and uniqueness of discrete solutions are established. Moreover, a convergence analysis of the nonlinear solver is also provided. Numerical results from model tests are performed to demonstrate the stability, optimal convergence in the usual L2 and discrete H1 norms as well as robustness of the proposed scheme with respect to the choice of the given traction vector.

  • A hybrid system contains both continuous variables and discrete event components. This paper presents the new control architecture for hybrid systems, which consists of a conventional controller for the continuous-time variable of the system, a supervisor for discrete event components of the system, and an interface for link between the controller and the plant. The presented controller is suitable for the system operating at the different operating conditions or for system being changing the plant model by enabling and disabling discrete events. This paper shows that the presented controller is better than the conventional controller.
