In the field of agricultural machinery, various on-field tests are conducted to measure design load for optimal design of agricultural equipment. However, field test procedures are costly and time-consuming, and there are many constraints on field soil conditions due to weather, so research on utilizing simulation to overcome these shortcomings is needed. Therefore, this study aimed to model agricultural soils using discrete element method (DEM) software. To simulate draft force, predictions are made according to travel speed and compared to field test results to validate the prediction accuracy. The measured soil properties are used for DEM modeling. In this study, the soil property measurement procedure was designed to measure the physical and mechanical properties. DEM soil model calibration was performed using a virtual vane shear test instead of the repose angle test. The DEM simulation results showed that the prediction accuracy of the draft force was within 4.8% (2.16~6.71%) when compared to the draft force measured by the field test. In addition, it was confirmed that the result was up to 72.51% more accurate than those obtained through theoretical methods for predicting draft force. This study provides useful information for the DEM soil modeling process that considers the working speed from the perspective of agricultural machinery research and it is expected to be utilized in agricultural machinery design research.
The computation of viscoelastic flow using neural networks and stochastic simulation (CVFNNSS) is developed from the point of view of Eulerian CONNFFESSIT (calculation of non-Newtonian flows: finite elements and stochastic simulation techniques). The present method is based on the combination of radial basis function networks (RBFNs) and Brownian configuration fields (BCFs) where the stress is computed from an ensemble of continuous configuration fields instead of convecting discrete particles, and the velocity field is determined by solving the conservation equations for mass and momentum with a finite point method based on RBFNs. The method does not require any kind of element-type discretisation of the analysis domain. The method is verified and its capability is demonstrated with the start-up planar Couette flow, the Poiseuille flow and the lid driven cavity flow of Hookean and FENE model materials.

This article deals with the transient analysis in bicycle shifting using a discrete chain model. Among the various components of a bicycle, we focused in the power-transmissions on the contact points between the chain element and sprocket. And by imposing kinematic motions on the front and rear derailleurs, we analyzed the shifting mechanism for increasing the rotational speed of rear wheel. In order to build the dynamic analysis model, we first tore down the real bicycle and measured each component's design parameters. Then we made 3-dimensional CAD models for each component related to the power transmission of a bicycle. Using the converted 3-dimensional dynamic model for the simulation program, we performed non-shifting and shifting dynamic analysis. As a result, we investigated the dynamic behaviors of a discrete chain model focused on the interaction between the chain and sprocket wheel.

A dynamic explicit finite element code for simulating sheet forming processes has been developed The code utilises the discrete Kirchhoff shell element and contact force is treated by a conventional penalty method. In order to reduce the computational cost a new and robust contact searching algorithm has been developed and implemented into the code. in the method a hierarchical structure of tool segments called a tree structure is built for each tool at the initial stage of the analysis Tree is built in a way to divide a trunk to 8 sub-trunk 2 in each direction until the lowest level of the tree(leaf) contains exactly one segment of the tool. In order to have a well-balanced tree each box on each sub level contains one eighth of the segments. Then at each time step contact line from a node comes out of the surface of the tool. Simulation of various sheet forming processes were performed to verify the validity of the developed code with main focus on he usefulness of the developed contact searching algorithm.

To reduce fuel consumption by reducing the weight of the deck of a dump truck and to design an eco-friendly deck, accurate structural analysis is required. To date, the load on the deck has been calculated based on the hydrostatic pressure or by applying the earth pressure theory. However, these methods cannot be used to determine the non-uniformity of the load on the deck. Load distribution varies depending on the size distribution and interaction of aggregate particles. Compared with the finite element method, the discrete element method can simulate the behavior of aggregate particles more effectively. In this study, major properties were obtained by measuring bulk density and repose. The deck of a 15 ton dump truck was simulated using the obtained properties and bumping, breaking, and turning load conditions were applied. EDEM, which is a discrete element analysis software, was employed. The stress and strain distribution of the deck were calculated by NASTRAN and compared with the measured values. The study revealed that the results derived from a DEM simulation were more accurate than those based on mathematical assumption.

In this paper, a coarse lunar soil model is developed using discrete element method and its computed physical properties are compared with those of the actual lunar soil for its validation. The surface of the actual moon consists of numerous craters and rocks of various sizes, and it is covered with fine dry soil which seriously affects the landing stability of the lunar lander. Therefore, in consideration of the environment of the lunar regolith, the lunar soil is realized using discrete element method. To validate the coarse model of lunar soil, the simulations of the indentation test and the direct shear test are performed to check the physical properties(indentation depth, cohesion stress, internal friction angle). To examine the performance of the proposed model, the drop simulation of finite element model of single-leg landing gear is performed on proposed soil models with different particle diameters. The impact load delivered to the strut of the lander is compared to test results.

In this study, the experimental tests for the direct tensile strength measurement of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) were numerically modeled by using the discrete element method (circle type element) and Finite Element Method (FEM). The experimental tests used for the laboratory tensile strength measurement is the Compressive-to-Tensile Load Conversion (CTLC) device. In this paper, the failure process including the cracks initiation, propagation and coalescence studied and then the direct tensile strength of the UHPC specimens measured by the novel apparatus i.e., CTLC device. For this purpose, the UHPC member (each containing a central hole) prepared, and situated in the CTLC device which in turn placed in the universal testing machine. The direct tensile strength of the member is measured due to the direct tensile stress which is applied to this specimen by the CTLC device. This novel device transferring the applied compressive load to that of the tensile during the testing process. The UHPC beam specimen of size 150 × 60 × 190 mm and internal hole of 75 × 60 mm was used in this study. The rate of the applied compressive load to CTLC device through the universal testing machine was 0.02 MPa/s. The direct tensile strength of UHPC was found using a new formula based on the present analyses. The numerical simulation given in this study gives the tensile strength and failure behavior of the UHPC very close to those obtained experimentally by the CTLC device implemented in the universal testing machine. The percent variation between experimental results and numerical results was found as nearly 2%. PFC2D simulations of the direct tensile strength measuring specimen and ABAQUS simulation of the tested CTLC specimens both demonstrate the validity and capability of the proposed testing procedure for the direct tensile strength measurement of UHPC specimens.
This article focuses on concrete structures submitted to impact loading and is aimed at predicting local damage in the vicinity of an impact zone as well as the global response of the structure. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) seems particularly well suited in this context for modeling fractures. An identification process of DEM material parameters from macroscopic data (Young's modulus, compressive and tensile strength, fracture energy, etc.) will first be presented for the purpose of enhancing reproducibility and reliability of the simulation results with DE samples of various sizes. The modeling of a large structure by means of DEM may lead to prohibitive computation times. A refined discretization becomes required in the vicinity of the impact, while the structure may be modeled using a coarse FE mesh further from the impact area, where the material behaves elastically. A coupled discrete-finite element approach is thus proposed: the impact zone is modeled by means of DE and elastic FE are used on the rest of the structure. The proposed approach is then applied to a rock impact on a concrete slab in order to validate the coupled method and compare computation times.
It is well accepted that rock failure mechanism influence the cutting efficiency and determination of optimum cutting parameters. In this paper, an attempt was made to research the factors that affect the failure mechanism based on discrete element method (DEM). The influences of cutting depth, hydrostatic pressure, cutting velocity, back rake angle and joint set on failure mechanism in rock-cutting are researched by PFC2D. The results show that: the ductile failure occurs at shallow cutting depths, the brittle failure occurs as the depth of cut increases beyond a threshold value. The mean cutting forces have a linear related to the cutting depth if the cutting action is dominated by the ductile mode, however, the mean cutting forces are deviate from the linear relationship while the cutting action is dominated by the brittle mode. The failure mechanism changes from brittle mode with larger chips under atmospheric conditions, to ductile mode with crushed chips under hydrostatic conditions. As the cutting velocity increases, a grow number of micro-cracks are initiated around the cutter and the volume of the chipped fragmentation is decreasing correspondingly. The crack initiates and propagates parallel to the free surface with a smaller rake angle, but with the rake angle increases, the direction of crack initiation and propagation is changed to towards the intact rock. The existence of joint set have significant influence on crack initiation and propagation, it makes the crack prone to propagate along the joint.
Targeting at simulating the application of thorium-uranium (TU) fuel in the CANDU-6 reactor, this paper analyzes the process using the code DRAGON/DONJON where the discrete TU fuel pins are applied in the CANDU-6 reactor under the time-average equilibrium refueling. The results show that the coolant void reactivity of the assembly analyzed in this paper is lower than that of 37-element bundle cell with natural uranium and 37-element bundle cell with mixed TU fuel pins; that the max time-average channel/bundle power of the core meets the limits - less than 6700kW/860 kW; that the fuel conversion ratio is higher than that of the CANDU-6 reactor with natural uranium; and that the exit burnup increases to 13400 MWd/tU. Thus, the simulation in this paper with the fuel in the 37-element bundle cell using discrete TU fuel pins can be considered to be applied in CANDU-6 reactor with adequate modifications of the core structure and operating modes.
