  • An experimental study was performed on the decomposition of gaseous ammonia and two selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs: toluene and acetone) in a combined nonthermal plasma reactor with corona and glow discharges. A lab pilot scale reactor (206 liter) equipped with a high electric power pack was used to determine the decomposition efficiency in relation with the inlet concentration and applied voltage. Three different types of discharging electrode such as wired rack, wire strings for corona discharge, and thin plate for glow discharge were put in order in the reactor. While decomposition of ammonia decreased with an increase in the initial concentration, acetone showed an opposite result. In the case of toluene however no explicit tendency was found in toluene and aceton. Negative discharge resulted in high decomposition efficiency than the positive one for all gases. A better removal of gas phase element could be achieved when fume dust were present simultaneously.

  • In a conventional plasma display, the bus electrode was located on the ITO electrode at the outer part of each cell. We propose a new electrode configuration using vertical auxiliary electrodes which play a role of electrically connecting ITO and bus electrodes with the aim of enhancing discharge and luminous characteristics of the PDP (Plasma Display Panel). In this paper, luminance and luminous efficiency of the 3 in.-diagonal test panel are measured with various number of vertical auxiliary electrodes such as 2, 50 and 150. The change in the luminous characteristics is explained in connection with the discharge characteristics of the PDP cells such as current peak, IR emission peak and ICCD picture image.

  • Both Facing Target Sputtering(FTS) and Cylindrical Post-Magnetron Sputtering(CPMS) systems have been degigned in order to form high density plasma and to obtain high deposition rate. However, these two systems have some different applications, and discharge characteristics of these two systems are not well known. In this paper, the discharge characteristics and plasma parameters of both FTS and CPMS systems are studied experimentally. It is found that these two system show some different discharge characteristics under magnetic fields. The plasma density and electron temperature of these two systems are in the range of $10^{10}{\sim}10^{11}[cm^{-3}]$ and $3.5{\sim}5.5[eV]$, respectively.

  • The analysis and performance evaluation of DBD actuator for plasma flow control was described. The experimental apparatus was designed to measure the flow velocity as the discharge conditions, and to find out the optimal discharge condition of the DBD actuator. The average-velocity increased with increasing the discharge voltage. The experimental results was compared with CFD analysis.

  • In order to confirm the creation of the OH radical which influences to RNO bleaching processes, it experimented using laboratory reactor of dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBDP). The experiments performed in about 4 kind process variables (diameter of ground electrode, diameter of discharge electrode, diameter of quartz tube and effect of air flow rate) which influence to process. In order to examine optimum conditions of design factors as shown in Box-Behnken experiment design, ANOVA analysis was conducted against four factors. The actual RNO removal at optimized conditions under real design constraints were obtained, confirming Box-Behnken results. Optimized conditions under real design constraints were obtained for the highest desirability at 1, 1 mm diameter of ground and discharge electrode, 6 mm diameter of quartz tube and 5.05 L/min air flow rate, respectively.

  • The address discharge characteristics of a open dielectric structure compared with the conventional panel structure are investigated by measuring the discharge firing voltage. The open dielectric structure could easily produce the discharge between the scan and the sustain electrodes by erasing the dielectric layer between two electrodes. Due to the changes in the discharge firing characteristics of the open dielectric structure between the two sustain electrodes, the conventional reset waveform including the address waveform needs to be modified. The modified driving waveform suitable for the open dielectric structure is proposed and examined in AC PDP.

  • In this paper microwave power propagated through the cold plasma was analyzed and measured with respect to the external magenetic flux density. The d. c discharge plasma was in the rectangular waveguide in which two electrode was inserted, and also the glass diseharge tube inserted in the ractangular wavegside. The direction of microwave pro-pagation, the axis of the discharge tube and external magnetic flux were perpendicular to each other. It showed that the attenuation and absorption of micro wave power propagated in the plasma was increased as the magnetic flux density, the discharge current and the pressure of the gas were increased.

  • We introduce Helicon discharge plasma source and Laser Thomson scattering system recently finished an installation in KRISS. Laser Thomson scattering method is promising for diagnostics in Helicon plasma because a measurement by electrical probe typically used has significant errors due to the gyromotion of electrons induced by high magnetic field. However, we found that LTS is affected by magnetic field so that we applied the normalization method for processing data and the results show a clear Maxwellian distribution at various conditions of magnetic field and RF power at low energy part without distortion.

  • A combined process of non-thermal plasma and catalytic techniques has been investigated to treat toxic gas compounds in air. The treated gas in the present study is $CH_3$CN that has been known to be a simulant of toxic chemical agent. A planar type dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) reactor has been used to generate non-thermal plasma that produces various chemically active species, O, N, OH, $O_3$, ion, electrons, etc. Several different types of adsorbents and catalysts, which are MS 5A, MS 13X, Pt/alumina, are packed into the plasma reactor, and have been tested to save power consumption and to treat by-products. Various aspects of the present techniques, which are decomposition efficiencies along with the power consumption, by-product analysis, reaction pathways modified by the adsorbents and catalysts, have been discussed in the present study.

  • A point plate type nonthermal plasma reactor, with a grounded cylindrical third electrode which closely- encompasses the needle point, have been investigated with an emphasis on the role of the third electrode. It was found that the point plate airgap, with the grounded third electrode, had a switching characteristic on its I V characteristics for negative and positive discharges, which is very different from that of a conventional point plate airgap without a third electrode. The corona discharge and ozone generation characteristics of the plasma reactor with the grounded cylindrical third electrode, such as the corona onset voltage. the breakdown voltage. the corona current. and the amount of output ozone, were influenced significantly by the height of the third electrode. and these characteristics can be controlled by adjusting the height of the third electrode.
