A new second-moment closure model for turbulent heat fluxes is proposed on the basis of the elliptic equation. The new model satisfies the near-wall balance between viscous diffusion, viscous dissipation and temperature-pressure gradient correlation, and also has the characteristics of approaching its respective conventional high Reynolds number model far away from the wall. The predictions of turbulent heat transfer in a channel flow have been carried out with constant wall heat flux and constant wall temperature difference boundary conditions respectively. The velocity field variables are supplied from the DNS data and the differential equations only fur the mean temperature and the scalar flux are solved by the present calculations. The present model is tested by direct comparisons with the DNS to validate the performance of the model predictions. The prediction results show that the behavior of the turbulent heat fluxes in the whole region is well captured by the present model.
This paper presents the three-dimensional stress analysis of orthotropic thick plates using the three-dimensional spline strip method based on the theory of elasticity. The orthotropic plates are made of Aragonite crystal and sitka spruce. To demonstrate the convergence and accuracy of the present method, several examples are solved, and results are compared with those obtained by other exact and numerical methods based on the theory of elasticity. Good convergence and accuracy are obtained. The effects of thickness/width ratio, aspect ratio and boundary conditions on normal stress distributions of Aragonite crystal plates and sitka spruce plates are investigated. Moreover, the difference of weak orthotropic and strong orthotropic properties given to the characteristics of stress distributions are also shown.

In order to reduce particulate emissions from diesel vehicles, mathematical model is established and analyzed on ceramic wall-flow monolith filter. A wall-flow monolith filter placed in the exhaust stream of a diesel engine can effectively limit the emission of diesel particulates through the monolith. The accumulated particulates can then be periodically combusted inside the monolith by directing hot gas to the monolith while normal engine exhaust is routed around the monolith system. The resulting low flow rates through the monolith require consideration of gas dynamics through the channels as well as particulate combustion to analyze this regeneration process. A mathematical model of the regeneration is formulated as a system of nonlinear partial differential equations describing the conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Numerical solutions are obtained by using a finite difference techniques for the spatial discretization. So we can use filter simulation program for the purpose of filter design and actual filter regeneration

Some laminate orientations have decreasing values of $D_{16}$, $B_{16}$, $D_{26}$ and $B_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. For such plates, the fiber orientations given above behave as specially orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the senior author. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms(Mx) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper, the result of the study on the subject problem is presented.

This paper describes a dynamic fracture behaviors of structural elements under elastic or elasto-plastic stress waves in two dimensional space. The governing equation of this problem has the type of hyperbolic partial differential equation, which consists of the equation of motions and incremental elasto-plastic constitutive equations. To solve this problem we introduce Zwas' method which is based on the finite difference method. Additionally, in order to deal with the dynamic behavior of elasto-plastic problems, an elasto-plastic loading path in the stress space is proposed to model the plastic yield phenomenon. Based on the result of this computation, the dynamic stress intensity factor at the crack tip of an elastic material is calculated, and the time history of a plastic zone of a elasto-plastic material is to be shown.

This paper presents the study on damage diagnosis of an intelligent cantilevered beams using PZT actuator and PVDF sensor This study provides the theoretical and experimental verification to examine structural damage. Time domain analysis for the non-destructive detection of damage is presented by parameterized partial differential equations and Galerkin approximation techniques. The time histories of the vibration response of structure were used to identify the presence of damage. Furthermore, this systematic approach permits one to use the piezomaterials to both excite and sense the vibration of structures. We also carried out the experimental verification about reliability of theoretical methods fur detecting the damage of a composite beam with PZT actuator and PVDF sensor. Experimental results are presented from tests on cantilevered composite beams which is damaged at different location and different dimensions. The results were compared with the simulation results. Good agreement between the results was found for the time shifts and amplitude difference in transients response of the cantilevered beam.

A numerical analysis on the freeze coating process of a non-isothermal finite dimensional plate with a binary alloy is performed to investigate the growth and decay behavior of the solid and the mushy layer of the freeze coat and a complete procedure to calculate the process is obtained in this study. The continuously varying solid and mushy layers are immobilized by a coordinate transform and the resulting governing differential equations are solved by a finite difference technique. To account for the latent heat release and property change during solidification, proper phase change models are adopted. And the convection in the liquid melt is modeled as an appropriate heat transfer boundary condition at the liquid/mushy interface. The present results are compared with analytic solutions derived for the freeze coating of infinite dimensional plates and the discrepancy is found to be less than 0.5 percent in relative magnitude for all simulation cases. In addition the conservation of thermal energy is checked. The results show that the freeze coat grows proportional to the 1.2 square of axial position as predicted by analytic solutions ar first. But after the short period of initial growth, the growth rate of the freeze coat gradually decreases and finally the freeze coat starts to decay. The effects of various non-dimensional processing parameters on the behavior of freeze coat are also investigated.
Water flow into unsaturated soils is most often modeled by Richards equation consisting of the mass conservation law and Darcy's law. Three standard forms of Richards equation are presented as the head (${\Psi}$)-based form, the moisture content (${\theta}$) based form, and the mixed form. Numerical solutions of these partial differential equations with highly nonlinear terms can cause poor results along with significant mass balance errors. The numerical solution based on the mixed form of Richards equation is known that the mass is perfectly conserved without any additional computational efforts. The aim of this study is to develop fully implicit numerical scheme of Richards equation for one-dimensional vertical unsaturated flow in homogeneous soils using the finite difference approximation, and then to perform sensitivity analysis of infiltration to the variations in the unsaturated soil properties and to different soil types.
Contrast-enhanced CT has an important role in the assessment of liver lesions. However, the optimal protocol to get most effective result is not clear. The main principle for deciding injection protocol is to optimize lesion detectability by rapid scanning when lesion-to-liver contrast is maximum. For this purpose, we developed a physiological model of contrast medium enhancement based on the compartment modeling and pharmacokinetics. Blood supply to liver was modeled in two paths. This dual supply character distinguishes the CT enhancement of liver from that of the other organs. The first path is by hepatic artery and the second is by portal vein. It is assumed that only hepatic artery can supply blood to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compartment. It is known that this causes the difference of contrast enhancement between normal liver tissue and hepatic tumor. By solving differential equations for each compartment simultaneously using computer program Matlab, CT contrast-enhancement curves were simulated. Simulated enhancement curves for aortic, hepatic, portal vein, and HCC compartments were compared with mean enhancement curves from 24 patients exposed to the same protocols as simulation. These enhancement curves were in a good agreement. Furthermore, we simulated lesion-to-liver curves for various injection protocols, and analyzed the effects. These may help to optimize the scanning protocols for good diagnosis.
The general behavior of curved girder including the warping effects is formulated by series of differential equations postulated by Vlasov. In order to determine the maximum shear force, the maximum bending moment, the maximum pure torsion, the maximum warping torsion, and the maximum bimoment for the curved girder grid bridges, it is important to find the location of live load applied to the curved girder grid bridges, so that the influence line can be estimated. In this paper, the influence line of shear force, bending moment, pure torsion, warping torsion, and bimoment due to unit vertical load and unit torsional moment for curved I-girder grid bridges are obtained by using the finite difference method.
