  • The new rotary friction damper was developed using several two-nodal rotary frictional components with different clamping forces. Because of these components, the rotary friction damper can be activated by building movements due to lateral forces such as a wind and earthquake. In this paper, various dependency tests such as displacement amplitude, forcing frequency and long term cyclic loading were carried out to evaluate on the structural performance and the multi-slip mechanism of the new damper. Test results show that the multi-slip mechanism is verified and friction coefficients are dependent on displacement amplitute and forcing frequency except long term cyclic loading.

  • Sensitivity analysis of the cylindrical zigzag cams under acceleration and centrifugal forces is performed. A Lagrangian method is used to determine the mechanism constant of zigzag track, And the equation of motion for cylindrical zigzag cam under rectangular pulse is derived by the governing equations of a single spring mass system. The ratio of the drive force tn resisting force is derived by angular acceleration, centrifugal force and setback force on the operation of the munition. The theoretical sensitivity curves for 3 models are analyzed. And experiments for 3 models are conducted to check safe and functional zone. Zigzag cam types can be satisfied all major design requirements for switch system of munition.

  • A new methodology is presented to evaluate material properties at high strain rates and high temperatures based on orthogonal metal cutting experiments and FEM simulations. Average strain rate and average temperature found in the deformation zone are computed and flow stress data at these conditions are modified until cutting forces calculated in simulations match those determined in experiments. Material properties obtained from this method were verified by additional metal cutting simulations. Derivation from cutting forces measured in experiments was less than 10%. The feasibility of tool design using FEM simulations is also demonstrated.

  • The governing equations of micro double cantilever beam structures interacted by electrostatic forces are obtained employing Galerkin's method based on Euler beam theory. Variations of static and dynamic responses as well as natural frequencies are estimated for applied voltages. In particular, it is investigated how the variations of beam properties resulted by manufacturing process influence the deflections and the modal characteristics. This study can help to design MEMS structures and to predict the performances with respect to manufacturing tolerances.

  • The noise generated from a treadband mechanism of a tire has been the subject of this research. In particular, the treadband has been treated as an infinite tensioned beam resting on an elastic foundation which includes damping. The main objective is here to predict the sound power generated from a system mentioned above by locating harmonic point forces representing the excitation of treadband at the contact patch. It is possible to predict the sound power radiated from this structure by wavenumber transformation techniques. To find out the minimum radiated sound power, All parameters were varied. Thus this model can be used as a tire design guide for selecting parameters which produce the minimum noise radiation.

  • This study is aimed to predict the configuration and tension of a towing cable of a side-scan sonar which plays an important role in developing ocean resources. The governing equations of 3-D static equilibrium equations for a flexible cable are derived and solved using a finite difference method. The forces considered in this paper are effective weights, drag forces due to currents and ship moving, and the tension at both ends of the towing cable. The governing equations are non-linear, so an iteration method is applied to solve the equation. A case study is carried out for several different conditions. The result will be useful for predicting the location of a side-scan sonar and to design the towing system.

  • This paper describes the dynamical behavior of the bicycle and its nonlinear effect when magnetic repulsive forces are applied to the bicycle cushion system. A finite-element method was used to obtain its reliabilities by comparing the experimental and numerical values and select the proper magnet sizes. The Equivalent spring stiffness values were evaluated in terms of both linear and nonlinear approximations, where the nonlinear effect was specifically investigated for the ride comfort. The corresponding equations of linear and nonlinear motion were derived for the numerical model with three degrees of freedom. Dynamic behaviors were observed when the bicycle ran over a curvilinear road in the form of a sinusoidal curve. The analysis in this paper for the observed nonlinearity of magnetic repulsive forces will be a useful guide to more accurately predict the cushion design for any vehicle system.

  • Numerous buildings have been damaged or destroyed in previous earthquakes by developing soft storey. Almost all the seismic codes have provisions to prevent soft storey in structures, most of them have recommended the ratio of stiffness between adjacent storeys, but none of them has proposed the method to calculate the storey stiffness. On the other hand a great number of previous researches on stiffness have been focused on approximate methods and accurate methods by using analytical softwares have been almost neglected. In this study, six accurate methods for calculating the storey stiffness have been studied on 246 two-bay reinforced concrete frames. It is shown with the results of the statistical study and structural analysis that method 3 in which there is no modification of the original model and the forces with triangular distribution similar to seismic forces are applied to the center of mass of all storeys has acceptable accuracy and desirable efficiency for designing and controlling structures.

  • Static and dynamic responses of micro cantilever beam structures undertaking electrostatic forces are obtained employing Galerkin's method based on Euler beam theory. Variations of static and dynamic responses as well as resonant frequencies are estimated for several sets of beam properties and applied voltages. It is shown that the applied voltage influences the deflection and the modal characteristics significantly. Such information can be usefully employed for the design of MEMS structures.

  • For the purpose of high outlet pressure, compactness and low vibration and noise, 2 stage reciprocating air compressors can have various cylinder arrangement: opposed, in-line, and V type. This paper presents an effective method to calculate the inertia forces and to design counter weight. This method is based on the complex representation for the orbital behavior of the compressor shaft. This method helps to find the optimal balancing rate easily to reduce the inertial force or moment. This paper shows that the residual inertia forces of the single throw shafts and the residual inertia moments of the double throw shafts remain to be imbalanced.
