  • The response of honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) pollination on canola yield with reference to most suitable number of bee hive need per unit area of crops in order to meet optimum pollination needs and better economic yields by comparing number of hives and yield components an experiment was conducted at Beekeeping and Hill Fruit Pests Research, Station Rawalpindi during 2017-18 in complete randomized block design with two sets of four treatments for comparison: 1 hive acre-1, 2 hives acre-1, 3 hives acre-1 and 0 hive acre-1. The hives were kept inside the experimental area. Parameters were assessed: pollination density, pollinator's diversity, agronomic and economic yield. In case of pollination density, the cumulative mean abundance bee species revealed that at 1200 hours, Apis mellifera was the most abundant and frequent visitor with a mean population of 8.69 bees/plant followed by A. dorsata (0.72), Syrphid fly (0.2) and other pollinators. Minimum bee population was observed during 1400 hours, mainly due to the closure of flowers and partially due to high temperature (>35℃). Pollinator diversity revealed that A. mellifera was the most dominant pollinator of Brassica crop with highest abundance (71%). A. dosata ranked 2nd (16%) followed by A. florea (6%) respectively.

  • A pilot-scale biocover was constructed at a sanitary landfill and the mitigation of methane and odor compounds was compared between the summer and non-summer seasons. The average inlet methane concentrations were 22.0%, 16.3%, and 31.3%, and the outlet concentrations were 0.1%, 0.1%, and 0.2% during winter, spring, and summer, respectively. The odor removal efficiency was 98.0% during summer, compared to 96.6% and 99.6% during winter and spring, respectively. No deterioration in methane and odor removal performance was observed even when the internal temperature of the biocover increased to more than 40℃ at midday during summer. During summer, the packing material simultaneously degraded methane and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) under both moderately thermophilic (40-50℃) and mesophilic conditions (30℃). Hyphomicrobium and Brevibacillus, which can degrade methane and DMS at 40℃ and 50℃, were isolated. The diversity of the bacterial community in the biocover during summer did not decrease significantly compared to other seasons. The thermophilic environment of the biocover during summer promoted the growth of thermotolerant and thermophilic bacterial populations. In particular, the major methane-oxidizing species were Methylocaldum spp. during summer and Methylobacter spp. during the non-summer seasons. The performance of the biocover remained stable under moderately thermophilic conditions due to the replacement of the main species and the maintenance of bacterial diversity. The information obtained in this study could be used to design biological processes for methane and odor removal during summer and/or in subtropical countries.

  • Since emergency response training for maritime safety and safety education of maritime education institutions are conducted based on the set scenarios and education contents, there are limitations in the reduction of human error and response to various situations. Although there is a need for improvement, there is no way to improve response capabilities by assessing existing education training and securing diversity in situations. This study proposes a theoretical procedure analyzer method to model the diversity of situations for the improvement of emergency response training. This paper defines the human and system theoretical procedure analysis model (HSTPA) based on the organic relationship of the source and system. The limitations of the existing training were derived by analyzing the errors that each component could produce and applying them to the fire response training scenarios requiring vertical reporting systems and responses. The segmentation and inspection of training scenario considerations applying the proposed HSTPA model is believed to help create diverse and realistic scenarios in emergency response training and education, and improve the situation judgment understanding and response capabilities of the subjects.

  • Super-orthogonal space-time trellis code (SOTTC) uses the expanded set of the orthogonal space-time block code to obtain coding gain and diversity gain without loss of transmit rate. In SOSTTCs, signal set expansions are performed by rotating the first column of the code matrix. The rotating phases used previously were selected to avoid the signal constellation expansion rather than the performance improvement. In this paper, we make a design criterion to select the proper rotating phase to improve the performance of SOSTTCs for fast Rayleigh fading channels. In addition, we design improved SOSTTCs by using the proper rotating phase. Simulation results are also provided to confirm our SOSTTCs are superior to the previous SOSTTCs in the view of BER performance.
