  • The CCDs are widely used in astronomical observations either in direct imaging use or spectroscopic mode. However, the areas of available sensors are too small for large imaging format. One possibility to obtain large detection area is to assemble mosaics of CCD, and drive them simultaneously. Parallel driving of many CCDs together rules out the possibility of individual tuning; however, such optimisation is very important, when the ultimate low light level performance is required, particularly for new, or mixed devices. In this work, a new concept is explored for an entirely novel approach, where the drive waveforms are multiplexed and interleaved. This simultaneously reduces the number of leadout connections and permits individual optimisation efficiently. The digital controller can be designed within a single EPLD (Erasable Programmable Logic Device) chip produced by a CAD software package, where most of the digital controller circuits are integrated. This method can minimise the component. count., and improve the system efficiency greatly, based on earlier works by Han et a1. (1996, 1994). The system software has an open architecture to permit convenient modification by the user, to fit their specific purposes. Some variable system control parameters can be selected by a user with a wider range of choice. The digital controller design concept allows great flexibility of system parameters by the software, specifically for the compatibility to deal with any number of mixed CCDs, and in any format, within the practical limit.

  • To search for the quasars at z > 7 in early universe, we are developing a optical camera which has a $1k\times1k$ deep depletion CCD chip, with later planned upgrade to HAWAII-2RG infrared array. We are going to attach the camera to the cassegrain focus of Otto Struve 2.1m telescope at McDonald observatory of University of Texas at Austin, USA. We present the design of a hardware interface to attach the CCD camera to the telescope. It consists of focal reducer, filter wheel, and guiding camera. Focal reducer is needed to reduce the long f-ratio (f/13.7) down to about 4 for wide field of view. The guiding camera design is based on that of DIAFI offset guider which developed for the McDonald 2.7m telescope.

  • In this study, performance of the post-installed anchor system was evaluated with reduced strength of concrete and anchor. One of the post-installed anchors was selected to performance evaluation. Concrete strength was reduced by freeze-thawing test, and the post-installed anchor strength was reduced by corrosion test. The post-installed Anchor was installed in concrete of freezing and thawing and original concrete, and corroded anchor was installed in original concrete only. Anchor diameter and installation depth of the anchor were the variable for each specimen. Performance of post-installed anchor system of each specimen was evaluated by pullout test. Anchor diameter and installation depth of anchor, it may affect the performance of the post-installed anchor system from the experimental test results. Fracture mode of each post-installed anchor system had occurred differently depending on the durability of concrete and anchor. The anchor pullout strength from the experimental test results was used in order to compare with the results of CCD (Concrete Capacity Design) method, and CCD equation was modified. Modified equation was able to predict the anchor pullout strength of post-installed anchor system in Original concrete and freezing and thawing of concrete.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • We are developing a CCD camera named CQUEAN (Camera for Quasars in Early Universe) to search for quasars at z > 7. CQUEAN has a 1024*1024 deep depletion CCD chip and will be attached to 2.1m Otto-Struve Telescope at McDonald Observatory, USA. Although commercial software for the CCD camera is provided by the vendor, we are going to develop our own software to control the other instruments as well, to carry out efficient observation. There are four major parts in our software: Instrument control part controls the camera and filter wheel to obtain imaging data. Quick look window is to display acquired imaging data for quick inspection. Telescope control part interfaces with Telescope Control System (TCS) to move the telescope and to get time or coordinate information. Finally, Observation scripting facility part carries out a series of short exposures in a batch. The whole software will be written in python on linux platform, using the instrument control software libraries provided by the vendors.

  • In this paper, an aberration free aspherical lens is designed and machined by new design method and the spherical aberration measuring system is developed. It confirmed the propriety of new design method by measuring optical characteristics of machined lens with the new measuring system. The system could measure a spherical aberration quantitatively by using CCD camera, laser, collimator and so on.

  • Mixture design of self-compacting concrete is a typical multi-criteria decision making problem and conventional mixture designs are based on the low level engineering method like trials and errors through iteration method to satisfy the various requirements. This study concerns with performing the straightforward multiobjective design optimization of economic SCC mixture considering relative importances of the various requirements and cost-effectives of SCC. Total five requirements of 28day compressive strength, filling ability, segregation stability, material cost and mass were taken into consideration to prepare the objective function to be formulated in form of the weighted-multiobjective mixture design optimization problem. Economic SCC mixture computational design can be given in a rational way which considering material costs and the relative importances of the requiremets and from the result of this study it is expected that the development of SCC mixtue computational design and the consequent univeral concrete material design optimization methodology can be advanced.

  • With the development and supply of digital displayers, there has been a heightened interest of late in digital photo frames, eclipsing the existing print frames. This digital photo frame was developed into a new LCD digital photo frame that can be used not only for data display but also as a surveillance monitoring equipment when combined with a CCD camera. The developed photo frame uses a one-way communication encryption method that replaces the existing two-way communication encryption method to ensure the security of the surveillance image data. This method uses the chaotic signal's one-way synchronization phenomenon, where synchronization is made for a certain amount of time, after which the synchronized data can be encrypted and decoded at any point. It can yield the same results as the two-way communication encryption method. Moreover, if the proposed method is applied to the close-range communication methods of ubiquitous devices, it will be able to obtain more efficient results.

  • In this study, an optimization for the production of water emulsion was designed by adding an extract of wheat sprout, which is known to contain a large amount of antioxidants. The central composite design of reaction surface analysis method (CCD-RSM) was used for the optimization process. The amount of emulsifier, emulsification time, and added amount of wheat sprout extract were selected as independent variables based on our preliminary experiments. The mean droplet size (MDS), viscosity, and emulsion stability index (ESI) were set as the responses to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. For each independent variable, the P-value and coefficient of determination were evaluated to verify the reliability of the experiments. From the result of CCD-RSM, optimum conditions for the emulsification were determined as 23.6 min, 7.7 wt.%, and 3.9 wt.% for the emulsification time, amount of emulsifier, and amount of sprout, respectively. From the optimized condition obtained, MDS, viscosity, and ESI after 7 days from reaction were estimated as 252.3 nm, 616.7 cP, and 88.7%, respectively. The overall satisfaction was 0.9137, which supported the validity of the experiments, and the error rate was measured at 0.5% or less by advancing the experiments. Therefore, an optimized process for producing an emulsion by adding the malt extract was designed by the CCD-RSM.
