This paper addresses modeling of the gyro drift by using the structure function approach which has been originally developed for characterization of the oscillator phase noise. It is shown that by using this approach, an arbitrary order of random and deterministic gyro drift processes can be characterized and easily measured. The relationship between the drift power spectral density and structure function is clarified. It is also shown that this approach simplifies analysis of the effect of drift on the control system performance.

Characteristics of flow patterns in horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow for two different sizes of pipe were investigated based upon a statistical analysis of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice. The probability density function and the power spectral density function of the traces indicate peculiar shapes depending upon the two-phase flow regime. Mixed and separated flows also could be identified by the autocorrelation function. The transition region from separated flow to mixed flow also could be identified by these statistical properties. The experimental data determined by this method were compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators. The result indicates that the statistical characteristics of differential pressure fluctuations at orifices may be a useful tool for identifying flow patterns of horizontal gas-liquid two-phase flow.

This paper presents the development of the probability density function applicable for wave heights (peak-to-trough excursions) in finite water depth including shallow water depth. The probability distribution applicable to wave heights of a non-Gaussian random process is derived based on the concept of the maximum entropy method. When wave heights are limited by breaking wave heights (or water depth) and only first and second moments of wave heights are given, the probability density function developed is closed form and expressed in terms of wave parameters such as $H_m$(mean wave height), $H_{rms}$(root-mean-square wave height), $H_b$(breaking wave height). When higher than third moment of wave heights are given, it is necessary to solve the system of nonlinear integral equations numerically using Newton-Raphson method to obtain the parameters of probability density function which is maximizing the entropy function. The probability density function thusly derived agrees very well with the histogram of wave heights in finite water depth obtained during storm. The probability density function of wave heights developed using maximum entropy method appears to be useful in estimating extreme values and statistical properties of wave heights for the design of coastal structures.
At the design of Mark III membrane type LNG tank, an analytical and experimental approach on the fatigue strengths of membrane and its welds are very important in order to assist designers and surveyors. In this study, fatigue tests of lap weld of Mark III membrane type LNG tank were carried out and cumulative damage factor was calculated in order to estimate the fatigue life by probability density function and rule methods. It contained the following tests and reviews : 1) The fatigue tests of lap weld of stainless steel according to statistical testing method recommended by JSME, 2)Preparation of S-N curve for lap welds considering the statistical properties of the results of fatigue tests. 3) Procedure for estimating the initiation life of fatigue crack of lap welds under variable loads by the rule lf classification society and probability density function, 4) Guideline for inspection of lap welds fo membrane type LNG tank.

In this paper, steady-state controllable M/G/1 queueing systems operating under the dyadic policies are considered. A new method to obtain the expected busy period when the D-policy is involved in system operation, is developed. This new method requires derivation of so called 'the pseudo probability density function' of the busy period for the system under consideration, which is completely different from its actual probability density function. However, the proposed pseudo probability density function does generate the correct expected busy period through simple procedures.
The SIMP (solid isotropic material with penalization) approach is perhaps the most popular density variable relaxation method in topology optimization. This method has been very successful in many applications, but the optimization solution convergence can be improved when new variables, not the direct density variables, are used as the design variables. In this work, we newly propose S-shape functions mapping the original density variables nonlinearly to new design variables. The main role of S-shape function is to push intermediate densities to either lower or upper bounds. In particular, this method works well with nonlinear mathematical programming methods. A method of feasible directions is chosen as a nonlinear mathematical programming method in order to show the effects of the S-shape scaling function on the solution convergence.

Traditional methods for estimating the location of underwater target, i.e. the triangulation method and the wavefront curvature method, have been utilized. The location of a target is defined by the range and the bearing, which estimates can be obtained by evaluating the time delay between neighboring sensors. Many components of error occur in estimating the target range, among which the error due to the fluctuation of heading angle is outstanding. In this paper, the wavefront curvature method was used. We considered the error due to the heading fluctuation as the $\beta$-density process, from which we analized the range estimates with $\beta$-density function exist in some finite limits, and its mean value and variation are depicted as a function of true range and heading fluctuation. Given heading angles and sensor separation, maximum estimated heading errors are presented as a function of true range.

When a 160QAM receiver in the band of spread spectrum system is interfered with a pseudo-random frequency-hopp-ing signal the interference signal has the form of the pulse amplitude probability density function. Each interfrering pulse amplitude probability density function Each interfering pulse amplitude is dependent upon theprobability density function of hopping frequency and the selectivity characteristic of 16QAM system in this paper the error rate equation of a system performance has been derived in the above condition which are interfrerence form and impulsive noise environmensts. The results of system analysis show us that the system performance is de-graded by impulsive noise and interference power, which improved as the frequency hopping bandsidth increases whit respect to receiver bandwidth
The transported probability density function(PDF) model has been applied to simulate the turbulent nonpremixed piloted jet flame. To realistically account for the mixture fraction PDF informations on the turbulent non-premixed jet flame, the present Lagrangian PDF transport approach is based on the joint velocity-composition-turbulence frequency PDF formulation. The fluctuating velocity of stochastic fields is modeled by simplified Langevin model(SLM), turbulence frequency of stochastic fields is modeled by Jayesh-Pope model and effects of molecular diffusion are represented by the interaction by exchange with the mean (IEM) mixing model. To validate the present approach, the numerical results obtained by the joint velocity-composition-turbulence frequency PDF model are compared with experimental data in terms of the unconditional and conditional means of mixture fraction, temperature and species and PDFs.
In this paper, a method for detection of forged signatures based on spectral analysis of directional gradient density function and a weighted fuzzy classifier is proposed. The well defined outline of an incoming signature image is extracted in a preprocessing stage which includes noise reduction, automatic thresholding, image restoration and erosion process. The directional gradient density function derived from extracted signature outline is highly related to the overall shape of signature image, and thus its frequency spectrum is used as a feature set. With this spectral feature set, having a property to be invariant in size, shift, and rotation, a weighted fuzzy classifier is evaluated for the verification of freehand and random forgeries. Experiments show that less than 5% averaged error rate can be achieved on a database of 500 signature samples.
