Rheological Studies of Greases (潤滑油의 粘性學的 硏究)

  • A steel capillary viscometer was built for the study of rheological properties of greases. Bentone greases with thickener concentration of 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 weight percent and lime-soap greases with soap concentrations of 2.4, 7.0, 9.3, 12.1 and 15.2 weight percent were studied. Capillaries with various radii R and lengths L were used to study the resident-time effect on the flow properties of lime soap greases. Detailed studies on bentone greases were conducted using a capillary with a fixed size. The results were analyzed by using Ree-Eyring flow equation. The factors appearing in the latter, ($X_1{\beta}_1/{\alpha}_1$ for Newtonian units, $X_2/{\alpha}_2$ and ${\beta}_2$ both for non-Newtonian units), were studied in order to investigate how they change with thickener concentrations and temperatures. Through this analysis, we have found that TEX>${\Delta}H_1^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}H_2^{\neq}$, the activation enthalpies for flow of type-1 unit and of type-2 unit, respectively, are approximately equal to that of the base oil, the solvent. From this fact, it is concluded that these type units flow into the holes which were produced by the movement of solvent molecules. For bentone greases, the ${\beta}_2$ is about constant independent of concentration at a given temperature as found in the literature. The resident-time effect has not been clearly demonstrated in this research; this is due partly to the nature of the greases used in our research and partly to the small values of L/R of our capillaries, the resident time being proportional to the value L/R.

  • Ab initio calculations with STO-3G method were carried out on isomers of isobutylene dianion and dilithioisobutylene, and geometry, energy and Mulliken population were discussed. Energy of reaction, ${\Delta}$E, for isodesmic processes involving these species and relative heats of formation, ${\Delta}H_f$, estimated with ${\Delta}$E have shown that the contribution of "Y-aromaticity" to the structural stabilization of Y-type dianion is a tenuous one but the alkylation appears to proceed via the Y-type dilithio compound.

  • Let $\Pi_i, \cdots, \Pi_k$ denote k gamma distributions with a common known shape parameter (degrees of freedom) r and scale parameters $\theta_1, \cdots, \theta_k$, respectively. Kim proposed an improved lower bound LB$(\delta^*)$, which concerns a two-stage elimimation type procedure for selecting the population associated with the largest scale parameter $max_{1\leqi\leqk} \theta_i$. The design constants (nr, mr, c) are given for k=4(1)10, $p^*=.95,.90 and \delta^*=1.75,2.0$. With these design constants, a comparison study was made with the procedure of Lee and Choi. As can be seen from the table, these are moderate amount of savings in the expected total sample size. Thus, together with the result in Lee and Choi, the two-stage procedure can perform much better than a single stage procedure.

  • Next to Paper I (Jeon 2009a), time-series BV CCD images of the open cluster M38 were taken for 4 nights on December, 2009. The observations have been carried out for total 27 nights. In addition to the 20 variable stars in the Paper I, the discovery of 44 new variable stars has been presented in this paper: $6{\delta}$ Scuti stars, $2{\gamma}$ Doradus stars, 18 eclipsing binaries and 18 semi-long periodic and/or slow irregular type variable stars. For the V photometry of the ${\delta}$ Scuti and ${\gamma}$ Doradus stars, multi-frequency analysis was performed using the Discrete Fourier Transform and linear least-square fitting. The period search for the eclipsing binaries and the semi-long periodic and/or slow irregular type variable stars was performed by phase fitting method. As a result, the periods for 23 variable stars among the 44 ones were defined.

  • Through time-series CCD photometry using a 155mm refractor, we found a new $\delta$ Scuti type variable star, HD 235428, near a known bright $\delta$ Scuti type star, DQ Cep. We performed follow-up observations using a 61cm telescope at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory. Four frequencies have been derived by multiple-frequency analysis, which are 15.804, 5.498, 15.351 and 24.516cycle $day^{-1}$, respectively. V-amplitude of HD 235428 is ${\Delta} V$ = 0.026.

PRELIMINARY RESULTS FOR SHORT-PERIOD VARIABILITY SURVEY (SPVS) : NEW FIELD VARIABLE STARS (단주기변광성 탐사의 예비결과 : 시험영역에서 발견된 새로운 변광성)

  • Preliminary time-series observations for short-period variability survey (SPVS) were carried out using a 155mm refractor and a $2k{\times}3k$ CCD camera at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. We found 21 new variable stars in the $90'{\times}60'$ test field region : 9 eclipsing binary stars, $5{\delta}$ Scuti type stars, a ${\gamma}$ Doradus type star, and 6 long period variables. The observing field center is R.A. $05^h\;00^m\;00^s$, DEC. $50^{\circ}\;00'\;00"$ (J2000.0). The period and amplitude ranges for the short-period variables, i.e., ${\delta}$ Scuti stars, were 0.052day - 0.107day and 0.012mag - 0.064mag, respectively.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish some sufficient conditions for oscillation of solutions of the second-order functional dynamic equation of Emden-Fowler type $\[a(t)x^{\Delta}(t)\]^{\Delta}+p(t)|x^{\gamma}(\tau(t))|\|x^{\Delta}(t)\|^{1-\gamma}$ $sgnx(\tau(t))=0$, $t\;{\geq}\;t_0$, on a time scale $\mathbb{T}$, where ${\gamma}\;{\in}\;(0,\;1]$, a, p and $\tau$ are positive rd-continuous functions defined on $\mathbb{T}$, and $lim_{t{\rightarrow}{\infty}}\;{\tau}(t)\;=\;\infty$. Our results include some previously obtained results for differential equations when $\mathbb{T}=\mathbb{R}$. When $\mathbb{T}=\mathbb{N}$ and $\mathbb{T}=q^{\mathbb{N}_0}=\{q^t\;:\;t\;{\in}\;\mathbb{N}_0\}$ where q > 1, the results are essentially new for difference and q-difference equations and can be applied on different types of time scales. Some examples are worked out to demonstrate the main results.
