  • A definition of timbre was proposed which suggested its application to two attributes of sound: "a characteristic which gives a clue to the identify of the sound source, and the quality of sounds which corresponds to the emotive impression timbre are multidimensional. Using semantic differential, the factorial invariance of timbre was investigated and it was found that three factors were dominant: "pleasant", "powerful" and "metallic". The generality of these three factors has been confirmed in Japan. The relation between timbre and physical values was examined. Finally, the usefulness of verbal expression concerning timbre has also been discussed.ing timbre has also been discussed.

  • A definition of finite automaton (DFA and NDFA) with intuitionistic fuzzy (final) states is proposed. Acceptance of intuitionistic fuzzy regular language by the finite automaton (DFA and NDFA) with intuitionistic fuzzy (final) states are examined. It is found that the finite automaton (DFA and NDFA) with intuitionistic fuzzy (final) states is more suitable for recognizing intuitionistic fuzzy regular language than earlier model. The paper also gives an idea of intuitionistic fuzzy regular expressions through possible definitions.

  • Depending on the type of textbook, the word and mathematical notation expression used in high school mathematics textbooks varied and there were also some differences on the mathematical definition and the content description methods. Not only the composition of textbooks but also various expressing ways of textbooks have significant impacts on teaching and learning of teacher and student. The diversity of expression had pros and cons like both sides of a coin. There is a positive aspect that we can pursue pedagogical diversity. Simultaneously there is a negative aspect that the possibility of acting as a learning burden exists in the viewpoint of the student and the equality of evaluation may be undermined. In this study, Preferentially we focused on analyzing the actual situation rather than judging what is more appropriate about the diversity of words and notation expressions used in mathematics textbooks which is based on the current curriculum. For this purpose, we analyzed 56 kinds of mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum, and presented four aspects(terms expressing, notations expression, mathematical definition, content description method) with examples about differences of the various expressions used in textbooks including 'terms and notations'.

  • Tension and Membrane have the potential to enable the realization of lightweight structures that have the attractive features of structures efficiency and aesthetical expression. Compared with pure (thorough-bred) tension structures such as cable net, air dome and tensegrity, so called hybrid tension structures such as beam string, tensegric system and other mixed structures have Potential still to be realized. After synnaruzubg the simple definition of tensegric structure, some holistic designs for hybrid tension structures completed recently in the author's practice are given.

  • Contemporary architecture has two different movements that one is the utilization of digital technology and the other is the inclination to nature. After deconstructivism in architecture, the tendency of design shows the fusion between digitalism and organicism and as a consequence the phenomena of 'skin expression' has emerged which can be thought as 'organic digitalism' or 'digital organicism'. The definition of skin tendency in environmental design is the design of nature based on the technology. As a result, the surface becomes the design issue compared to structure and the momentum for new aesthetic value. There are post-structuralism, complex system theory and the organic architecture as theoretical background for the tendency of skin expression. Specially the ideas of post-structural philosophy has effected deeply to the formation of its movement and also offered the theoretical nutrition for digital architecture. The characteristics of the skin tendency can be analyzed as topological transformation, smooth continuum, deterritorialization, ecological response system, and tactility. These design characteristics has combined with conventional material and design vocabulary to transform and develope new spatial conception.

  • Petri nets(PN) have been introduced as a poweful analyzing and design tool for the discrete systems such as sequential control systems. However, one of the important problems in its applications is that the model can not be analyzed easily when we deal with large scale systems because of increase of the number of components of the systems. To overcome this problem, some methods for dividing or reducing of PN have been suggested. In this paper, an approach for hierarchical expression of PN based on Sequential Function Chart(SFC) and Bottom Up oriented Mehodology(BUM) is proposed. Especially, some definition and rules are defined in order to divide and compose sub PN. A measuring tank system will be described as a typical kind of discrete systems and modeled by some sub PN based on the SFC and BUM by the proposed method in this paper.

  • The purpose of this study is to express display space according to a way of symbols' meanings, to apply and study the way that systemizes, specifies and objectifies the approaches to designs when the space is expressed. The study will present applicable characteristics in expressing the display space by analyzing visitors' symbolic nature prior to the specification of space expression. The study way is to analyze the definition, structure, system, characteristic and meaning-applied ways of the symbols through symbolic theoretical considerations, to show communication's accessibility applying the symbol-produced ways to the relationship between the conception and the components in expressing the exhibition space and finally to present the way to express the exhibition space through the symbols' meaning-produced ways.

An Intelligent Emotion Recognition Model Using Facial and Bodily Expressions

  • As sensor technologies and image processing technologies make collecting information on users' behavior easy, many researchers have examined automatic emotion recognition based on facial expressions, body expressions, and tone of voice, among others. Specifically, many studies have used normal cameras in the multimodal case using facial and body expressions. Thus, previous studies used a limited number of information because normal cameras generally produce only two-dimensional images. In the present research, we propose an artificial neural network-based model using a high-definition webcam and Kinect to recognize users' emotions from facial and bodily expressions when watching a movie trailer. We validate the proposed model in a naturally occurring field environment rather than in an artificially controlled laboratory environment. The result of this research will be helpful in the wide use of emotion recognition models in advertisements, exhibitions, and interactive shows.

A study on the expression types and aesthetic formativeness of tassels and fringe in modern bag design (현대 가방 디자인에 나타난 술 장식의 표현유형과 미적 조형성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide ideas for the development of bag design by analyzing the expression types and aesthetic formativeness of modern bag design using tassels and fringe given the newtro trend pursuing analog sensitivity in modern society. The methods and scope of this study are as follows. First, the related literature and internet data were reviewed in order to examine the expression types and characteristics of the bags of the West and East. Next, the definition and characteristics of tassel and fringe decoration in terms of the history of clothing were analyzed. Finally, the expression types and aesthetic formativeness of tassels and fringe were derived through the analysis of modern bag design shown in the fashion collections since 2010. The bags decorated with the tassels and fringe bring a variety of visual effects depending on the attachment position, direction and material composition, concentrating the gaze and radiating original style. In this study, the expression of tassels and fringe in modern bag design was classified into three types: surface decoration, shape variability, and object combination. Next, the aesthetic formativeness of modern bag design using tassels and fringe as decorative elements appeared through the mixture of heterogeneous materials and playfulness through imagination, exaggeration through extension of length and volume, and retro characteristics through reinterpretation of tradition. This study is expected to contribute to creative ideas of modern bag design which requires a global sense, which has been used in various cultures for a long time.

The Definition of the Expression 'Perils of the Seas' in Marine Policies (해상보험증권상(海上保險證券上) 'Perils of the Seas'에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • It is unsafe to attempt a complete definition of the expression 'perils of the seas', because in practice the question 'what is a peril of the seas' is inextricably woven up with the further question, 'was the loss proximately caused by the sea peril ?' Such casualties as stranding, collision and heavy weather appear with monotonous regularity in the daily reports, and are the obvious examples. However, what can be included in the term 'perils of the seas' seems to be inexhaustible, although most circumstances appear to have been covered by the Courts. Two cases heard in 1887 were instrumental in defining perils of the seas. In The Xantho Lord Herschell made the following remarks: "The term ... does not cover every accidents or casualty which may happen to the subject matter of insurance on the sea. It must be a peril 'of' the sea. Not every loss or damage of which the sea is the immediate cause is covered by these words. They do not protect, for example, against that natural and inevitable action of the winds and waves which results in what may be described as wear and tear. There must be some casualty, something which could not be foreseen as one of the necessary incidents of the adventure. The purpose of the policy is to secure an indemnity against accidents which may happen, not against events which must happen. ... If a vessel strikes upon a sunken rock in fair weather and sinks, this is a loss by perils of the sea."
