  • As has been expected, economic factors are a major consideration in almost every decision in building design process. Assuming that improving a lighting system, existing or proposed, will reduce operating cost, what preliminary economic guidelines can be established to determine whether any proposed investment appears cost effective? In such a case a reasonable technique to compare system costs is by life-cycle costing. Stated simply, a life-cycle cost represents the total cost of a system over its entire life cycle, that is, the sum of first cost and all future costs. This paper aims to exemplify the benefit of daylighting in term of economic consideration. Four different electric lighting system designs are proposed and a lighting control system that is continuously operating according to the level of daylight in the space has been adapted. The accumulated performance of electric and daylighting is figured out to declare the effective depth of daylight in the space. The analysis on the saving amount of lighting energy due to daylight has been undertaken in answer to the question, that is, several projects are being considered, which is the most desirable from the cost-effectiveness viewpoint. The result shows clearly that although denser layout of lighting fixtures might be more effective to interface to the level of daylight ceaselessly changeable, its economic benefit may not meet the expected criterion the reason of increased initial investment and maintenance cost for the fixtures and control hardware.

  • Attention on daylighting should be focused not so much on a simple maximization of the natural light available in a space, as on improving the quality of lighting by ensuring as even but intense distribution of illumination in inner areas. An architectural means of optimal daylight distribution is by using so-called light shelf systems, horizontal shading and redirecting devices. The overall performance of the daylighting system can be improved by the incorporation with electric lighting control devices. This paper aims to exemplify the benefit of daylighting in term of economic consideration. In such a case a reasonable technique to compare system costs is by life-cycle costing. Stated simply, a life-cycle cost represents the total cost of a system over its entire life cycle, that is, the sum of first cost and all future costs. • For the evaluating daylighting performance, field measurement, scale model test and a set of computer tools can be applied. For the scale model measurements, the sky simulator is a vital facility to represent the desired sky conditions consistently. Recently K university has developed a large size sky simulator, 6m-diameter and 3.7m-height, that is suitable for the international standard. To verify the reliability of the sky simulator, the luminance distribution on the inner sky surface was measured and compared with the CIE standard overcast sky model. It is found that the sky simulator can be reproduced the CIE standard overcast sky condition with 4.3% as mean difference. K university sky simulator is fully validated for usability and accuracy for daylighting researches.

  • There is something valuable in Korean traditional architecture that does not change even after more than a number of years. Each design element of traditional houses has its own role to embody natural, healthy, and environment-friendly architectural planning. With traditional already-built examples located in the northern area of Gyeongbuk province, this study attempts to untangle some of the daylighting control issues in opening design. By looking at more than just photometric materials, at some threshold level, the whole of daylighting control characteristics of their openings is being surveyed from the viewpoint of geometric relationship between their roof structures and windows. As a glazing material, in addition, Korean traditional window covering paper, Changhoji, is evaluated for its transmittal performance under artificial and real skies as well.

  • Daylighting in educational environment is very important as it has an effect on students' performance as well as in their visual health. It is regarded as a good energy conservation method in saving energy used for lighting. This study conducted initial daylight measurements to analyze luminous environment in classrooms of Korean elementary school. The results indicated that the typical classroom had a reasonable level of daylight. However, it also found that the classroom had some problems of the uniformity of illuminance and the contrast of brightness of surfaces in the classroom. It is argued that daylighting design for school classroom should consider these aspects to make daylit classrooms ideal so as to provide comfortable visual environment.

  • A series of outdoor tests were conducted on a fiber optic solar concentrator system for its performance on daylighting. The system is comprised of four main components - a parabolic dish reflector, a convex mirror, a homogenizer tube and an optical fiber cable. Results show that the system could be successfully applied for indoor lighting if some improvements are made for light transmiting (optical) cables. A maximum concentration ratio of 90 was observed delivering the illuminance of 4,800 lux at a distance of 1.2m from the diffuser for the outdoor illuminance of 102,100 lux.

  • This study is presents model testing to evalute daylighting performance in Atrium Building. There are several methods fof the prediction of Daylighting level in a Atrium Building, But they are not sufficient to estimate intreior daylight level of each different hights onleaner Atrium Building. In this study provide with making the model to estimate the environmental effect for the daylight on leaner Atrium, measuring the model in 80 variable sky condition, building direction, interior length-width ratio through the variation of floor-hight and space ratio.

  • Recently, various kinds of daylight system are recognized as an important and useful strategy in energy-efficient building designs. However, a large amount of direct sunlight can make many problems. Therefore, it is necessary to control daylighting through louver systems for high quality visual environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze daylighting performance in the reading room of a library according to different azimuths and louver systems. The results evaluated daylight performance based on the RADIANCE lighting software.

  • The conventional way to acquire sufficient amount of daylight in interiors is to provide large openings with clear glass. The use of clear glass on the whole facade, however, might cause a sort of visual problem because of the harness of direct sun and brighter sky surface than expected. They should be filtered in opticalway or bounced in the architectural. One of the common solutions for the problem might be the use of photometric glasses with various transmittances for the glass walls. This paper deals with performance data related to the impact of various transmittal glazing materials for window systems in terms of daylighting. A series of scale model measurements was carried out with the fundamental configuration of a commonly used all-glass facades. Additionally some experimental performance index was issued for the better expression of the need of natural lighting.

  • The total evaluation of educational environment is needed with the rapid growth of the number of students. Especially it is very important to evaluate the physical environment of the classroom in elementary schools where the students spend their whole school life. This study aims to evaluate the daylighting and sound insulation performance of the classroom in elementary school, considering factors such as ceiling height and Wi/Wa (Window/Wall) ratio and then to plan the classroom. Analytic results of the daylighting and sound insulation performance show that the optimum Wi/Wa ratio is $35{\sim}45%$. Reduction of the ceiling height from 3.3m has little influence on the distribution of the indoor daylight factor and sound insulation performance
