  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify health literacy levels of Asian immigrant women in Korea and factors related with health literacy in them among other sociodemographic characteristics. Methods: Data were drawn from 671 immigrant women who came from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and other Asian countries (M age=$28.1{\pm}5.89$) using REALM-R, which consisted of 8 medical words and was translated into Korean (score range: 0~8). Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 20.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheff\acute{e} test and multiple regression. Results: The average score of health literacy was $5.0{\pm}2.61$. Time since immigration, country of origin, education level, and Korean language proficiency significantly predicted levels of health literacy in Asian immigrant women (adjusted R square=.200, p<.001). Conclusion: When health care professionals provide health care services and health education, they should consider levels of health literacy and factors related with health literacy in Asian immigrant women.

  • Purpose: This study developed a self-report measure for easy assessing of the health literacy of Asian immigrant women in South Korea. Methods: After a literature review, focus group interviews, and content validity evaluation, 14 preliminary items were generated. These were translated into Chinese, Vietnamese, and English. Data were collected from 229 Asian immigrant women. Validity and reliability tests were conducted. Results: Factor analysis yielded final 10 items in three factors: primary functional and interactive health literacy, secondary functional and interactive health literacy, and critical health literacy, which explained 61.90% of the total variance of health literacy. In known-group comparisons, health literacy was significantly lower in recent immigrants, those with a low education level, and those with low Korean language proficiency. For convergent validity, health literacy was positively associated with health specific self-efficacy and maternal health knowledge. For criterion-related validity, health literacy was positively associated with the REALM-SF. The overall reliability coefficient (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$) of the instrument was .773. Conclusion: The Health Literacy Assessment Scale for Asian Immigrant Women (HLAS) represents a multidimensional construct which encompasses functional, interactive, and critical health literacy. This self-report HLAS can be a useful and convenient method for appraising the health literacy of Asian immigrant women.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of father's socio-demographic variables and father's literacy beliefs on father's literacy interaction. Participants were 204 fathers who have children in 3 to 5 years of age. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The findings are summarized as follows: (1) Father's education level was generally correlated with 'father role efficiency', 'open interaction', 'picture-book reading interaction' (2) Monthly income of the household was related 'father role efficiency', 'positive feelings on reading books'. (3) 'Literacy ability development from books', 'father role efficiency', 'positive feeling on reading books' were correlated 'open interaction' and 'picture book reading'. But, 'literacy ability development from books', 'father role efficiency', 'positive feeling on reading books' were negatively correlated 'direct interaction'. (4) The most influential factor on father's 'open interaction', 'direct interaction' was 'literacy ability development from books'. The most influential factor on father's 'picture-book reading' was 'positive feeling on reading books'. These findings highlight that 'literacy ability development from books' and 'positive feeling on reading books' may play critical roles in father's literacy interaction. So, it is very important that adequate training and support on father's literacy beliefs for father's high quality literacy interaction.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to identify the level of health literacy and to investigate the relationship between the health literacy and preventive health care use in middle-aged adults in Korea. Methods: A total of 315 adults aged 40 to 64 years living in Seoul participated in the study. Data were collected from December 15-24, 2010 from outpatient hospitals, clinics, workplaces and other locations in the community. Health literacy was measured using the Functional Health Literacy and Self-rated Health Literacy Questionnaires. Preventive health service use was defined as receiving screening (general health checkups, gastric and colorectal cancer, mammogram, and pap smear) and influenza vaccination. Descriptive analysis, t-test, and ANOVA were used. Results: The mean of functional health literacy was 3.87 (score range 0-6) and the self-rated health literacy was 60.08 (score range 16-80). The most difficult items of the self-rated questionnaires were patient educational materials provided by health care providers and medical forms. The most difficult items of functional health literacy were information-based, including nutritional facts and clinical schedules. Association between health literacy and preventive health service use was not found. Conclusions: Further study is necessary with larger samples and with considerations for their education level, age, and preventive health care use.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of eHealth literacy on health promoting behaviors, thereby providing basic data for the development of interventions for health promoting behaviors among university students. Methods: Data were collected from 242 university students aged 19 and over in a university located in K province in South Korea. Participants responded to structured questionnaires in September 2018. eHealth literacy and health promoting behaviors were measured by eHealth Litaracy (EHL) and a translated version of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP-II), respectively. The correlation between eHealth literacy and health promoting behaviors were analyzed using Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis was carried out to examine the influence of eHealth literacy on health promoting behaviors. Results: The participants had a moderate level of eHealth literacy with the greatest score recorded in the sub-domain of functional eHealth literacy and the lowest in the sub-domain of critical eHealth literacy. Female students and students who majored in healthcare had higher levels of eHealth literacy than male students and those with non-healthcare majors. The degree of health promoting behaviors was moderate or lower with the highest score being in the sub-domain of interpersonal support and the lowest in the sub-domain of health responsibility. Health promoting behaviors had significant relationships with eHealth literacy, exercise hours, subjective health status, and health concerns. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the participants engaged more in health promoting behaviors when they had greater eHealth literacy (β=.18, p<.001), interest in their own health (β=.33, p<.001), exercise hours (β=.18~.23, p<.001), and subjective health status (β=.17~.18, p=.007~.031). Conclusion: In order to facilitate health promoting behaviors of university students, interventions for health promoting behaviors need to be developed including strategies to improve competencies relevant to critical eHealth literacy and to increase exercise hours.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify levels of health literacy and examine the effects of health literacy and self-care activities on quality of life of patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cross sectional design was used. Questionnaires were administered via the Gallup to 500 Korean patients with diabetes in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t tests, one way ANOVA, and hierarchical regression. Results: Of 500 patients, 12.4% (n=62) indicated 'inadequate' health literacy, and 43.8% (n=219) reported 'marginal' or 'adequate' health literacy. Levels of health literacy significantly differed by demographic characteristics, self-care activities, and quality of life. The factors that had a significant effect on quality of life included inadequate health literacy (B=3.63, p=.042) and marginal health literacy (B=3.84, p=.002); however, no significant relationship was found for self-care activities (B=0.01, p=.827). Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate a need for further research with large samples using Korean Health Literacy Scale for Diabetes Mellitus to establish the relationships between health literacy, diabetes self-care activities, and quality of life.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of eHealth literacy, reproductive health knowledge, and self-esteem on early adult women's health-promoting behaviors (HPB). This study was based on Pender's health promotion model as a theoretical underpinning. Methods: Early adult women aged 18 to 35 years (n=165) were recruited by posting advertisements on social network sites for a student club and a faith-based community in Ansan, Korea. Willing individuals were invited to participate in the online survey from June 1 to June 30, 2022. Standardized instruments were used to measure HPB, eHealth literacy, reproductive health knowledge, and self-esteem. General characteristics included income level, perceived subjective health, and internet usage time. The collected data were analyzed using the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 21.97±3.87 years. The total HPB score was 120.69, corresponding to a moderate level; and the total scores for eHealth literacy (30.24), knowledge of reproductive health (23.04), and self-esteem (35.62) were higher than the midpoint. The model explained 53.3% of variance in HPB, and self-esteem (β=.48, p<.001) was the most influential factor. Other influential factors were, in descending order, higher economic level, higher subjective health status, greater eHealth literacy, and less internet use time (<2 hours/day). Conclusion: In order to promote the health of early adult women, counseling or programs that positively improve self-esteem appear promising, and eHealth literacy should be considered as a way to promote HPB using information technology.

  • Financial literacy (FL) is significant, as educated investors have a culture of savings and investment. The current study was conducted to identify the level of Orientation toward finance (ORTOFIN) and its impact on specific financial behavior variables like Financial Literacy (FL) and Intention towards investment (ITI). Data was randomly collected from 210 gainfully employed respondents using three standardized questionnaires. Demographics of the respondents were also collected. The data was analyzed using correlation and regression. The variables include ORTOFIN, Financial Literacy, and Intention towards Investment, while the control variables include gender, age, qualification, years of experience, and type of industry working. The results of the study show that all three variables (ORTOFIN, FL, and ITI) had significant relationships among themselves. In addition, it as has been found that ORTOFIN and FL positively influence investment intention. The finding that ORTOFIN and literacy are related to investment intention is new, as no past studies have examined this aspect, which is unique. The study also discusses the implications and limitations of the study, such as the impact of family involvement. It thus indicates a positive effect of the variables studied on investment intentions. The study is expected to stimulate further empirical examination of the variables.
