  • Ethaboxam[(RS)-N-(a-cyano-2-thenyl)-4-ethyl-2-(ethylamino)-1,3-thiazole-5-carboximide] is a novel fungicide with high level of activity against Oomycetes fungi. The control effects of ethaboxam technical and various ethaboxam formulations were investigated against P. brassicae, the causal agent of clubroot disease in Chinese cabbage. When ethaboxam was applied to infested soil, club formation caused by P. brassicae was strongly inhibited at 8.33 mg/L soil and $EC_{50}$ of ethaboxam was 2.65 mg/L soil. Five ethaboxam formulations [10% suspension concentrate (SC), 15% SC, 2% granule (GR), 5% GR, 25% wettable powder] and mixture formulation of ethaboxam and metalaxyl (3%+1% GR) exhibited good efficacy against the pathogen. 10% SC, 15% SC, and 2% GR formulations of ethaboxam showed better disease controlling efficacy on Chinese cabbage clubroot than the other formulations. The $EC_{50}$ values of 10% SC, 15% SC, and 2% GR formulations of ethaboxam were 3.72 mg AI/L soil, 1.1 mg AI/L soil, and 4.95 mg AI/L soil, respectively. Among them, soil drenching application by 15% SC formulation of ethaboxam exhibited the most in vivo antifungal activity on P. brassicae. These results indicate that ethaboxam has a high potential for the control of clubroot disease.

  • In silico analysis of genome of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 identified two genes, slr0329 and sll0593, that might participate in glucose (Glc) phosphorylation (www.kazusa.or.jp/cyano). In order to determine the functions of these two genes, we generated deletion mutants, and analyzed their phenotypes and enzymatic activities. In the presence of 10 mM Glc, wild-type (WT) and slr0329 defective strain (M1) grew fast with increased respiratory activity and NADPH production, whereas the sll0593 deletion mutant (M2) failed to show any of the Glc responses. WT and M1 were not significantly different in their glucokinase activity, but M2 had 90% less activity. Therefore, we propose that Sll0593 plays a major role in the phosphorylation of glucose in Synechocystis cells.

  • The stability of three oximes, Hl-6 [(4-carbamoyl-2'[(hydroxyimino)-methyl]- 1,1'-oxydimethylenedi-(pyridinium chloride)], Hl-CN [(4 cyano-2'-[(hydroxyimino)-methyl] -1,1'-oxydimethylene-di-(pyridinium chloride)], and 2-PAM [pralidoxime chloride] in aqueous solutions was evaluated by HPLC assay. The rate of degradation is dependent on the pH as well as the temperature at which the solution is stored. The optimum pH for the stability of these oximes was pH 2 to 3. The degradation rate constant for 2-PAM ($k\;at\;70^{\circ}C$, $2.07{\times}10^{-4}/hr;\;E_a\;value$, 27.2 kcal/mol) was smaller than those for bis-pyridiniumoximes, Hl-6 ($k\;at\;70^{\circ}C$, $3.38{\times}10^{-3}/hr$) and Hl-CN ($k\;at\;70^{\circ}C$, $8.66{\times}10^{-3}/hr;\;Ea\;value$, 20.7 kcal/mol). In mechanistic analyses, it was found that Hl-CN was decomposed through not only the hydrolysis of nitrile group but also the cleavage of methylene ether bridge, in contrast to Hl-6 which was degraded mainly through the cleavage of methylene ether bridge.

  • The influence of the 2-(4-(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyloxy)phenoxy)-N-phenyl- propionamide derivatives on the herbicide activities against rice plant with pre-emergence and post-emergence in down land were examined and the structure activity relationship (SAR) were analyzed by Free-Wilson and Hansch method. In pre-emergence, the SAR approach is shown that the optimal, $({\pi})_{opt}=0.91$, hydrophobicity with electron donating effect of the ortho substituted mono substituents and 2,3,4-substituted three substituents were found to be contribute the herbicidal activity. Whereas, in post-emergence, the optimal, ({\pi})_{opt}=0.50$, hydrophobicity with electron withdrawing effect of meta substituted mono subsituents and 2,3-substituted two substituents were found to be contribute the herbicide activity. The herbicide activities with post-emergence more increase than that of pre-emergence. It is assumed from the SAR equations that the 2-methyl-3-methoxy-4-cyano group substituent is selected as the most lowest herbicide activity against rice plant with post-emergence in green house. The hydrolysis reaction was proceeded through nucleophilic addition-elimination (Ad_{Nu-E})$ with the orbital control between LUMO of substrate and HOMO of water molecule. And molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) of none (H) substituent was discussed.

  • It is essential that second order nonlinear optical materials have low optical propagation losses in the wavelengths of second harmonic generation for practical applications in waveguides. Three dipolar chromophores substituted with nitro, cyano, and alkyl sulfone as an electron withdrawing group were prepared. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of the cyano and alkylsulfone chromophores showed a blue-shift compared to the nitro chromophore. The introduction of oxadiazole segment in the chromophore structure led to similar spectral shift. The blue-shift can produce low optical loses at second harmonics. The chromophores were successfully attached to a polyimide, yielding side chain polymers. The nonlinear optical property of the prepared optical polymers was determined by measuring electro-optic coefficient at 1.55 mm. The polymers exhibited high glass transition temperature of over $185^{\circ}C$ and thermal stability to $300^{\circ}C$ through differential scanning calorimeter analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate degradation pattern of two synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, bifenthrin having 2-methylbiphenyl group and cyhalothrin having ${\alpha}$-cyano benzyl ester group in theirs alcohol moiety, in two soils and aqueous media under laboratory conditions. The half-life of bifenthrin was 85.1 days and 12,4 days in Chilgok and Bokhyen soil of aerobic upland condition, respectively, and that of cyhalothrin was 54.6 days and 32.2 days. Bifenthrin and cyhalothrin were degraded very slowly under anaerobic flooded condition and sterilized. Their degradation seemed to be mainly mediated by aerobic microorganisms in soil. Bifenthrin and cyhalothrin were degraded more rapidly in Bokhyen soil with rich organic matter than Chilgok soil. Cyhalothrin was degraded 30 days faster than bifenthrin under aerobic upland condition of two soils. Cyhalothrin was degraded more than bifenthrin in alkaline solution of pH 10, but cyhalothrin and bifenthrin were degraded very slowly in acidic solution of pH 2 and 6.

  • Although antisolvent-assisted crystallization is one of the promising processes to produce high-quality perovskite films, general antisolvents such as chlorobenzene (CB) have toxic and volatile properties. In addition, CB is not suitable to control the crystallization of perovskite in the atmospheric air. In this work, isopropyl acetate (IA) is used as an eco-friendly antisolvent to demonstrate air-processed perovskite solar cells, and ethyl-4-cyanocinnamate (E4CN) with a cyano group, carbonyl group, and aromatic ring is introduced in IA to improve the performance and stability of devices. Defects at the surface and grain boundaries of the perovskite layer, such as un-coordinated Pb2+ and iodine, can be decreased resulting from the interaction of E4CN and perovskite, and thus reduced recombination and enhanced carrier transport can be expected. As a result, the perovskite device with E4CN achieves a high maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.89% and outstanding stability, maintaining 60% of the initial efficiency for 300 h in the air without any encapsulation.

  • INTRODUCTION : Various types of organic reactions in the crystalline state, so-called "topochemical reaction", have been reported in this century." Among the reactions, [2+2] photocycloaddition of diolefin crystals are one of the most intensively investigated examples. In the topochemical reaction in a pure sense, the space group symmetry is perfectly preserved throughout the reaction as were demonstrated by the crystalline-state photopolymerization of 2,5-distyrylpyrazine (2,5-DSP) and photodimerization of propyl $\alpha$-cyano-4-[2-(4-pyridyl) ethenyl]cinnamate. 2,5-DSP was initially prepared by Franke and in 1958 Koelsch and Gumprecht described briefly in their article of diazine-derivatives that it was found that the compound (2,5-DsP) was converted into a colorless insoluble polymer (\ulcorner) dec. 331~331$\circ$ when the solid was exposed for a few hours to ultraviolet light. Wright described in his book as if Koelsch and Gumprecht had investigated both the structure of the photoproduct and the crystal structure 2,5-DSP in detail. However, in the paper, they have not described any study on chemically correct analysis and crystallography of the resulting photoproduct at all. In 1967, one of present authors (M. H.) independently made the same observation as Franke that brilliant yellow crystal of 2,5-DSP was converted into powdery white substance under the sunlight in the course of a preparative study of pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid from 2,5-DSP. He investigated this phenomenon and concluded for the first time that a linear highmolecular-weight polymer crystal ([$\eta$] > 3.0 in $CF_3COOH$ solution) with recurring cyclobutane units in the main chain, had been produced from 2,5-DSP crystal by the action of sunlight.on of sunlight.

  • A novel, blue light-emitting polymer, poly(phenyl-9,9-dioctyl-9',9'dihexanenitrile)fluorene (PPFC6N), containing an alkyl and cyano group in the side chain, was synthesized by Suzuki polymerization and characterized. The polymer structure was confirmed by $^1H-NMR$. The number average molecular weight and the weight average molecular weight of the obtained polymer were 9,725 and 9,943 respectively. The resulting polymer was thermally stable with a glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of $93^{\circ}C$, and was easily soluble in common organic solvents such as THF, toluene, chlorobenzene and chloroform. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the polymer were revealed as 5.8 and 2.88 eV by cyclic voltammetry study, respectively. The ITO/PEDOT:PSS (40 nm)/PPFC6N (80 m)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (150 nm) device fabricated from the polymer emitted a PL spectrum at 450 nm and showed a real blue emission for pure PPFC6N in the EL spectrum. When t-butyl PBD was introduced as a hole blocking layer, the device performance was largely improved and the EL spectrum was slightly shifted toward deep blue. The device with PPFC6N containing t-butyl PBD layer showed the maximum luminance of 3,200 $cd/m^2$ at 9.5 V with a turnon voltage of 7 V.

  • The metal complexes can be influenced not only by the central metal atoms and the substituent groups, but also by the native of the chelating atoms. For example, near-infrared absorbing chromophores were synthesized by the reaction of phenylenediamine derivatives with a solution of pottassium hydroxide followed by the addition of nickel(II) chloride. These dyes provide absorbing infrared light over 780-840 nm with an extinction coefficient of $2.5-6.0{\times}10^4$. By introduction of alkyl, alkoxyl, cyano, and other functional group into the parent dye, these dyes greatly improved the solubility in organic solvent. New near-infrared absorbing donor-acceptor chromophores have been investigated by varying the electron donating and accepting strength of the two halves of the molecule. The cyanine chromophores permit the simplest way of obtaining systems that absorb well into the near-infrared region of the spectrum. Cyanine dyes possess high extinction coefficients that initially increase with Increasing chain length. These chromophores could be useful in near-infrared optical materials.
