  • The failure of cut slope and landslide sometimes come from a local downpour within a short duration in Korea. Especially, most of recent downpour converged upon a limited region and seemed the characteristics of guerilla. Characteristics of slopes failed due to local downpour are analyzed. failure mode is also analyzed with respect to the depth of soil layers and the change of groundwater level. To blow the influence factors of the slope stability during local downpour, the authors conducted field survey for failed slopes and tried to make a comparative study of 1,372 cut slope data distributed in the national road. FLAC-SLOPE(ITASCA Co.) is used to analyze slope stability with changing depth of soil layers and groundwater level. The result shows that the failed types of domestic slopes during local downpour are mainly shallow collapse and landslide. The change of soil depth and groundwater level have influenced on the stability of slopes.

  • As the development of national lands increase, the necessity to develop less favorable terrain also increases. It also becomes more difficult and complicated to provide access that is both economical and safe from contributing to soil erosion on roadsides and to londscape damages. Because of the increased and justified emphasis upon environmental degradation, proper stabilization of the cut-and bank slopes of roadsides, plant sites and building sites in Korea requires careful planning as well as execution of the constructions. All fill slopes should be compacted to a degree consistent with design standards and material properties. Drainage facilities should be provided to prevent damaging concentrations of surface runoff and to avoid high pore pressures in cuts and fills. All surfaces of cut-fill slopes should be revegetated with suitable species as soon as possible after construction. To stabilize the cut-fill slopes of highway roadsides should be considerded the factor of stabilization as well as landscape conservation especially. Such basic influences as the effects of vegetations on water balance of rain fall, on the control of surface erosion and on the surface slope failures are briefly discussed in the report.

  • This study was conducted to grasp the effect of afforestation of cut slope using coir blocks on the improvement of scenery and the management of non point pollution source. Total four experimental tanks such as general soil slope, coir blocks, installation slope, slope refilling the inside of coir blocks slope with pebble, slope refilling the inside of coir blocks with soil and plant were installed, pollution source water was supplied and the possibility of reduction management of non point pollution source was analyzed at four items of COD, SS, T-N, T-P and main results drawn from this study are as follows. In conclusion, biodegradable materials like coir blocks and soil and plant layers are judged to be helpful in reduction management of non point pollution source inflowing to water space from land area. Thus, the reduction of non point pollution source occurring at land area is thought to be fully controlled at the cut slope, the space prior to inflowing to water ecological space like a stream or a swamp area.

  • In order to examine the characteristic of shallow failure in cut slopes composed of weathered granite soil, this study calculated critical permeability coefficient according to rainfall characteristic in Korea, performed stability analysis according to the representative physical properties of weathered granite soil distributed in Korea such as horizontal distance to the failure surface of cut slope, slope inclination, slope height, and the depth of wetting by rainfall, and analyzed the results. In the results of analyzing critical permeability coefficient, when the local rainfall characteristic was considered, the maximum critical permeability coefficient was $7.16{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec$. We judged that shallow failure according to wetting depth should be considered when rainfall below the critical rainfall intensity lasts longer than the minimum rainfall duration in cut slopes composed of weathered granite soil, which had a critical permeability coefficient lower than the maximum critical permeability coefficient. Furthermore, using simulated failure surface, this study could understand the characteristic of shallow failure in cut slopes based on the change in slope safety factor according to horizontal distance, wetting depth, and strength parameter.

  • Many failures in cut slopes occur during and following road construction. Failures are caused, in part, by a lack of understanding of the characteristics of rock mass including its geologic structure. The stability of rock slopes is closely related to factors that include the type of rock, development of geological structures, weathering, characteristics of rock, and the shape of the geologic features. Therefore, it is very important to consider these characteristics of rock mass in the evaluation of rock slope stability. In spite of investigation from many slope failures, these information data were not systematically stored and not efficiently utilized. In this study, a Database system named DB/SLOPE was developed using Oracle for systematic management of cut slopes. The developed database system can be used to estimate of slope stability and to predict of slope failure.

  • Since the cut slope has been big concern due to frequent failures, the government decided to include cut slopes in the“Act for Safety Control of Public Structures”. Based on the Act, the cut slope whose height is over 50m and length is over 200m should be inspected on the regular basis. According to the Act, KISTEC developed the objective evaluation method for the condition of cut slope. The evaluation method is divided into two categories: evaluation for damaged condition and evaluation for failure affecting factor. Based on the evaluation results, the cut slope is graded from A to E. In this study, the process to evaluate the cut slope condition and the evaluation criteria to divide the grade of cut slope are introduced.

  • Several remedial works were attempted to stabilize the collapsed area of the inlet slopes of diversion tunnel, but prevention of any further movement was being only carried out at beginning stage by filling the area with aggregates and rock debris, after several cracks had been initiated and developed around the area. The extra specialty developed folding zone is consisted with highly weathered Greywacke and Black shale. The suggested solution is to improve the properties of the rock mass of failed area by choosing the optimum level of reinforcement through the increment of slope rock support design so as to control the movement of slopes during the re-excavation. The Bakun hydroelectric project includes the construction of a hydroelectric power plant with an installed capacity of 2,520MW and a power transmission system connecting to the existing transmission networks in Sarawak and Western Malaysia. The power station will consist of a 210m height Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam. During the construction of the dam and the power facilities the Balui River has to be diverted of the tunnels is 12m and the tunnel width is 16m at the portal area. This paper describes the stability analysis and design methods for the open cut rock slopes in the inlet area of the diversion tunnels. The geotechnical parameters employed in stability calculations were given as a function of four defined Rock Mass Type (RMT) which were based on RMR system from Bieniawski. The stability calculations procedure of the rock slopes are divided into two stages. In the first stage, it is calculated for the stability of each "global" slope without any rock support and shotcrete system. In the second stage, it is calculated for each "local" slope stability with berms and supported with rock bolts and shotcrete. The monitoring instrumentation was performed continuously and some of the design modification was carried out in order to increase the safety of failed area based on the unforeseen geological risks during the open cut excavation.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the roadside slope of mountainous Parkway. 48 sites were selected by Random Ranking Sampling. This study was researched on the slope condition with the cause of occurrence, the situation of fundamental engineering works and vegetation on slopes. The main results of this research are summarized as follow ; 1. Slope shapes are shown nine types in cut slope and four types in fill slope. 2. Generally, fill slopes are larger than cut slopes in slop area. 3. Grade is more steep than standard grade. 4. Main engineering works, which constructed for slope stability, are terracing, side-ditch wall, channel, concrete trellis works and wire fence. 5. Roundabout channel were many constructed within the sector of Ukmojeong-Deokdong, but were few constructed within the sector of Banseon-Seongsam pass and Cheoneun Temple-Seongsam pass. 6. Most. of side-ditch wall were constructed of concrete and wet-masonry. 7. In vegetation works, many exterior species were selected. 8. Planting pattern was not combinated with the national park landscape.
