It has been expected not only for crew but also for passengers to realize a ship whose rolling and other motions are small as much as possible. Restricting our consideration to the roll reduction, the conventional roll stabilization system, fins or anti-rolling tanks hve been utiized as the actuator. Excessive motions would interfere with the recreational activities of passengers on a cruise ship. Often more than half of the load of a containership is stowed above deck where it is subjected to large acclerations due to rolling. In some situations this may cause some internal damage to the contents of the containers; in more severe situations failure of the lashing can occur and containers may be lost over-board. Underdeck cargo in ordinary cargo ships and bulk commodities in colliers, ore ships and grain ships can shift if the motions become too severe. The purpose of this study is to concentrate on the additions. either internal or external to the hull, that reduce or otherwise improve the motion responses of the hull. It is assumed that the additions are such that their benefit to the motions of the ship outweights any impact on the ability of the ship to perform its assigned task. It is particularly challenging to obtain large improvements in the motion characteristics of existing ships that are being rebuilt or modified for some task not anticipated in their original design. Further the authors will statistically analyze the influence of ruder-roll-yaw coupling motion in the case of application of this advanced control method to various kinds of ship.

When the laws about the security of ships are revised, or voyage conditions are changed, ship owners have converted rather than built new passenger ships including cruise ships recently. As conversion causes a lot of changes in principal dimension, structural strength, hydrodynamic performance, the number of passengers, and cargo capacity, detailed pre-review is needed. But any studies on conversion have not been carried out yet, this study investigated and analyzed the trend of consulting companies' reports (Delta Marine Report, 2005, 2008). As a result, it was found that lengthening conversion brought about the main changes in principal dimension, and performance. Also it was suggested that there be factors for consideration like hull scantling, hull form, and cutting point to minimize side effects when ship owners build ships having lengthening conversion in mind.
Marine magnetic surveys provide a rapid and cost-effective method for pioneer geophysical survey for many purposes. Sea-surface magnetometers offer high accuracy but are limited to measuring the scalar total magnetic field and require dedicated cruise missions. Shipboard three-component magnetometers, on the other hand, can collect vector three components and applicable to any cruise missions. However, correcting for the ship's magnetic field, particularly viscous magnetization, still remains a challenge. This study proposes a new additional correction method for ship's viscous magnetization effect in vector data acquired by shipboard three-component magnetometer. This method utilizes magnetic data collected simultaneously with a sea-surface magnetometer providing total magnetic field measurements. Our method significantly reduces deviations between the two datasets, resulting in corrected vector anomalies with errors as low as 7-25 nT. These tiny errors are possibly caused by the vector magnetic anomaly and its related viscous magnetization. This method is expected to significantly improve the accuracy of shipborne magnetic surveys by providing corrected vector components. This will enhance magnetic interpretations and might be useful for understanding plate tectonics, geological structures, hydrothermal deposits, and more.
This study simulates and compares the evacuation time and characteristics according to the living patterns on board a training ship which was launched in Dec. 2005, on the viewpoint of the various activities being possible on board a cruise ship. Based on interviews with personnels on board, 3 living patterns are set as representative living conditions; Pattern A(all personnels are positioned at their cabins), Pattern B(all personnels are positioned at lecture rooms, offices or else), Pattern C(all personnels are positioned at restaurant or cafeteria). The simulation results show that Pattern B is comparatively ideal because the evacuation time is short and there is less delay of personnels' movement on each deck. On the contrary, Pattern C is evaluated as the worst because the average evacuation time took more than 360 seconds and the bottle-neck happened at Upper deck. As a result, this study proposes the needs of various countermeasures against the fire and/or disaster, considering the various living patterns on cruiser(s) and/or passenger ship(s).

To prevent the Sewol incident again, by which the victims are 294 dead and still 10 missing, this study analyzed the change of safety consciousness of passengers onboard ship comparatively before and after the Sewol incident. The survey had performed 2 times at Jeju coastal cruise terminal at February 2014 and May 2014, and effective respondents were 394 and 401, respectively. After the Sewol incidents, the answers' ratio that they would follow the routes that the crews show and they would follow the crews' evacuation guides are decreased 24.5% and 18.5%, respectively. This means that the reliability on the crew members were decreased. Although 77.6% passengers responded that they felt nervousness onboard ship, 60% did not take safety lesson(s) and 45% did not know how to wear a life jacket. And also over 50% did not check the evacuation route map and the location of lifeboat, respectively. Meanwhile, 86.9% respondents answered the system of safey lesson should be changed, which has normally done by TV set.

Users of passenger ships and cruise ships are rapidly increasing year by year, and the needs of the floating architecture are newly come out. But the studies about the passengers' safety and the countermeasures against incidents on board the ships are rare, although the ships' incidents are occurred averagely 15 cases per year during last 10 years. For the purposes of the analysis of the safety consciousness and gathering the some of input data for evacuation simulation for Korean passengers on board ships, this study performed surveys targeting ordinary 394 passengers who are not specially trained and/or accustomed with onboard living conditions. The results are the followings. The reliability on ships' safety is surveyed as 32.3%. Only 14.6% of respondents are aware that there were safety education on board ship during sailing. And 42.2% and 40.9% of respondents answered that they saw the map of emergency routes and knew where the life boats are, respectively. And 73.3% select crews' direct or in-direct(like announcement by indoor broadcasting system) guidances as the most effective evacuation method.
Recently, almost cruise are manufactured with electric propulsion system. The characteristics and types of the electric propulsion motors, which is one of the most important component in electric propulsion system for ships, are examined and compared. And a trend on the recent technical development of electric propulsion motors for ships is introduced.
Honeycomb panel has a constructive advantage because it is constructed with a honeycomb core, so it has relatively higher strength ratio to weight. Therefore honeycomb panel has been used as the light weight panels in the high-speed railway technology and high-speed ship like as cruise yachts. Also it has been used in the aircraft and aerospace industry as a structural panel because light weight structure is indispensible in that field of industry. Recently, the honeycomb panel is embossed in the viewpoints of high oil prices as the lightweight panel of the transport machine, however the sound insulation capacity of the honeycomb panel is poorer than those of uniform and another sandwich panels. In this paper a method to improving the sound absorption coefficient of a honeycomb panel Is studied by using the Helmholtz resonator. The sound absorption coefficients for some kinds of honeycomb cores are demonstrated by the normal incident absorption coefficient method.

In this paper, floor impact noise reduction in a cruise ship cabin by using floating floor is studied. A mock-up is built by using 61 steel plate, and two identical cabins are made where 25t panel is used to construct wall and ceiling inside the steel structure. Various floating floor systems are tested for which normalized impact noise is measured according to ISO 140-7 It is shown that effect of VL(Visco-elastic Layer) is negligible when it is used between deck and mineral wool, since most vibration absorption occurs in the wool. In addition, direction of the mineral wool fiber affects impact noise significantly.

Various floating floor systems are tested for which normalized impact noise is measured according to ISO 140-7. It is shown that VL(Visco-elastic Layer) is more effective when hard plates are added above the VL.
