This paper proposes a hybrid approach involving Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Bacterial Foraging (BF) for tuning the PID controller of an AVR. Recently the social foraging behavior of E. coli bacteria has been used to solve optimization problems. We first illustrate the proposed method using four test functions and the performance of the algorithm is studied with an emphasis on mutation, crossover, variation of step sizes, chemotactic steps, and the life time of the bacteria. Further, the proposed algorithm is used for tuning the PID controller of an AVR. Simulation results are very encouraging and this approach provides us a novel hybrid model based on foraging behavior with a possible new connection between evolutionary forces in social foraging and distributed non-gradient optimization algorithm design for global optimization over noisy surfaces.
Objectives: This study investigated the effect of SM-2015 on blood alcohol clearance and hangover. We undertook this study to test whether SM-2015 is effective in decreasing blood alcohol concentration and preventing the symptoms of alcohol-induced hangover. Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers participated in this randomized crossover study. All participants were classified between an SM-2015 intake group (test group) and a non-intake group (control group). The primary outcome measure was the difference in blood alcohol concentration and hangover severity scores between the test and control groups. The secondary outcome measure was the difference in a liver function test (LFT) between the test and control groups. Results: After alcohol exposure, the sensitivity scores of blood alcohol concentration and hangover symptoms (sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, stomach pain, diarrhea, and concentration disorder) were significantly decreased in the SM-2015 intake group compared with the non-intake group. There were no differences in the LFT results between the SM-2015 intake group and the non-intake group. Conclusions: SM-2015 is effective in decreasing blood alcohol concentration and preventing the symptoms of alcohol-induced hangover. Larger studies are required to confirm these findings.
Normalization transforms one parent genotype to be consistent with the other before crossover. In this paper, we explain how normalization alleviates the difficulties caused by non-synonymously redundant encodings in genetic algorithms. We define the encodings with maximally non-synonymous property and prove that the encodings induce uncorrelated search spaces. Extensive experiments for a number of problems show that normalization transforms the uncorrelated search spaces to correlated ones and leads to significant improvement in performance.

Service composition in the Inter-Cloud raises new challenges that are caused by the different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the users, which are served by different geo-distributed Cloud providers. This paper aims to explore how to select and compose such services while considering how to reach high efficiency on cost and response time, low network latency, and high reliability across multiple Cloud providers. A new hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to perform the above task called LS-NSGA-II-DE is proposed, in which the differential evolution (DE) algorithm uses the adaptive mutation operator and crossover operator to replace the those of the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) to get the better convergence and diversity. At the same time, a Local Search (LS) method is performed for the Non-dominated solution set F{1} in each generation to improve the distribution of the F{1}. The simulation results show that our proposed algorithm performs well in terms of the solution distribution and convergence, and in addition, the optimality ability and scalability are better compared with those of the other algorithms.
Objectives: To review clinical research trends of herbal medicine treatment for alcohol use disorder. Methods: Three domestic databases and eight foreign databases were used to search for published articles by November 1, 2023 in each database. A total of 9 studies were included. Results: There were eight randomized control studies and one non-randomized control study. All randomized control studies were designed with 2-arm paralleled. The non-randomized control study was designed with 2-arm crossover. The most commonly used prescriptions were Kudzu extract capsules and Seoganhaeul capsules. The most used herbs were Puerariae Radix, Hyperici Perforati Herba, and Acanthopanacis Senticosi Radix et Rhizoma seu Caulis. Conclusions: Traditional herbal medicine might be effective in alleviating drinking behavior, physical problems, and psychological problems of patients with alcohol use disorder. However, the limited number of included studies suggests that further methodologically rigorous research studies on herbal medicine treatment for alcohol use disorder are needed in the future.
Background: The limited studies on the effect of buffering on the clinical efficacy of articaine have reported controversial results. The purpose of this study was to clinically compare the pain of injection, anesthetic success, onset, and duration of pulpal anesthesia of buffered 4% articaine with epinephrine 1:100000 versus a non-buffered 4% articaine with epinephrine 1:100000 formulation for buccal infiltration of the mandibular first molar. Methods: Sixty-three volunteers were enrolled in the study. All volunteers received two injections consisting of a single mandibular first molar buccal infiltration with 1.8 ml of 4% articaine with epinephrine 1:100000 and 1.8 ml of 4% articaine with epinephrine 1:100000 buffered with 8.4% sodium bicarbonate. The infiltrations were applied in two separate appointments spaced at least one week apart. After injection of the anesthetic solution at the examined site, the first molar was pulp-tested every 2 min for the next 60 min. Results: Successful pulpal anesthesia was recorded in 69.8% of cases using non-buffered articaine solution and 76.2% of cases using buffered articaine solution, with no significant difference between the formulations (P = 0.219). The mean time of anesthesia onset for the volunteers with successful anesthetic outcome in both formulations (n = 43) was 6.6 ± 1.6 min for the non-buffered articaine solution and 4.5 ± 1.6 min for the buffered solution, which differed significantly (P = 0.001). In the same volunteers, the mean duration of pulpal anesthesia was 28.4 ± 7.1 min for non-buffered articaine solution and 30.2 ± 8.5 min for buffered articaine solution, with no significant difference between the formulations (P = 0.231). Considering the pain of injection, regardless of the anesthetic success, the mean values of VAS were 11.3 ± 8.2 mm for the non-buffered articaine solution and 7.8 ±6.5 mm for the buffered articaine solution, which differed significantly (P = 0.001 < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the present study, 4% articaine with epinephrine can benefit from buffering and provide better anesthetic behavior, with improved onset and less pain during injection.

The aim of this study is to clinically evaluate the effect of a mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride on reduction of morning oral malodor in healthy subjects measured by organoleptic measurement and a portable sulfide monitor. A total of 8 healthy non-smoking male volunteers were enrolled in this study of crossover design consisting of two experimental phases. The subjects were instructed to rinse the mouth with 10 mL of the experimental mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride for 30 seconds at the first phase. At the second phase after a one-week washout period, each subject rinsed with distilled water as a control. All experiments were conducted at around 8:30 a.m. and oral malodor was measured using organoleptic measurement and a portable sulfide monitor just before rinsing with the experimental mouthwash or control (baseline), 1 hr, 2 hrs, and 3 hrs after rinsing. The mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride reduced morning oral malodor up to 3 hrs after rinsing. Organoleptic score and concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds after use of the experimental mouthwash significantly decreased with time, and the decreases were significantly different between the mouthwash and control. In conclusion, the mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium and zinc chloride is significantly effective on reduction of morning oral malodor in healthy subjects by 3 hrs.
Purpose: The purpose of this review was to assess the quality and to evaluate the effectiveness of music interventions in reducing agitation in older adults with dementia. Methods: Randomized controlled studies and randomized crossover studies were identified by searching MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, AGELINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Korea Med, Kmbase, RISS, National Assembly Digital Library, KISS, and RICH. Two reviewers independently retrieved articles, extracted data, and assessed the quality of studies. Results: In total, 10 studies were selected from 1095 unique citations. All included studies were conducted in long term care settings. Overall, risk of bias for included studies was low to moderate. The weighted average effect size across studies was -0.39 (95%CI [-0.69, -0.10], p=.009, $I^2=63%$). Music therapy was effective to reduce agitation of the older adults with dementia. Conclusion: Music intervention can be an effective non-pharmacological intervention for the reduction of agitation in dementia. Future studies need to use rigorous research method and to provide description of research methods in greater detail. In addition, future studies are required to explore the effects of music therapy according to severity of agitation and dementia.

The in-vitro starch digestibility of white and brown rice flours was continuously characterized from a rheological point of view. Specifically, the in-vitro viscosities of the rice digesta samples were monitored under simulated oral, gastric, and intestinal conditions. A trend of decreasing viscosities in all the digesta samples was observed during the in-vitro digestion. After cooking, the brown rice sample exhibited lower viscosity than that of the white rice flour due to the presence of more non-starch components. A similar tendency was observed during the simulated oral and gastric digestions. However, the viscosity crossover between the white and brown rice samples was observed during intestinal digestion. In addition, the amount of glucose released from the brown rice flour was significantly lower than that from the white rice flour. Thus, the slower rate of starch hydrolysis in the brown rice flour could be related to its in-vitro rheological behaviors.

The solution of the power flow is one of the most important problems in electrical power systems. These traditional methods such as Gauss-Seidel method and Newton-Raphson (NR) method have had drawbacks up to now such as initial values, abnormal operating solutions and divergences in heavy loads. In order to overcome theses problems, the power flow solution incorporating genetic algorithm (GA) is introduced in this paper. General operator of genetic algorithm, arithmetic crossover, and non-uniform mutation operator of GA are suggested to solve the power flow problem. While abnormal solution cannot be obtained by a NR method, multiple power flow solution can be obtained by a GA method. With a heavy load, both normal solution and abnormal solution can be obtained by a proposed method. In this paper, a floating number representation instead of the binary number representation is introduced for accuracy. Simulation results have been compared with traditional methods.
