  • This paper analyzes the vocal tract area estimation algorithm used as a part of a speech analysis program to help deaf children correct their pronunciations by comparing their vocal tract shape with normal children's. Assuming that a vocal tract is a concatenation of cylinder tubes with a different cross section, we compute the relative vocal tract area of each tube using the reflection coefficients obtained from linear predictive coding. Then, we obtain the absolute vocal tract area by computing the height of lip opening with a formula modified for children's speech. Using the speech data for five Korean vowels (/a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/), we investigate the effects of the sampling frequency, frame size, and model order on the estimated vocal tract shape. We compare the vocal tract shapes obtained from deaf and normal children's speech.

  • We developed a general purpose program for the analysis of flows in a gas turbine combustor. The program uses non-staggered grids based on finite volume method and the cartesian velocities as primitive variables. We calculated a flow inside the C-type diffuser to check the boundary fitted coordinate. The velocity profiles at cross section agree well with experimental results. We calculated turbulent diffusion flame behind a bluff body for the combustion simulation. Simulation shows two recirculating region like experimental results. Simulated velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, temperature and concentration distribution agree well with experimental data. Finally, simulation of axisymmetric flows with swirl shows two recirculating region like experimental results.

  • The electromagnetic wave scattering problems from inhomogeneous material bodies are considered. The formulation is made in terms of mixed potentials for the moment methods (MoM). The surfaces of a three-dimensional inhomogeneous scatterer of arbitrary shape are divide into triangular patches for descretization. Application of the boundary conditions leads to the coupled surface integral equations to be satisfied for the unknown surface equivalent electric and magnetic currents. The radar cross-section (RCS) for some structures is computed and the results are compared with the reported data.

  • Turbulent flow and heat transfer in the 180.deg. bend with square cross section were analizied numerically by using k-.epsilon. 2 eqatiuon model with applications of QUICK scheme and PSL method. Results with PSL method show the more agreements with experimental data than those with wall function. However these results also show that it is very difficult to predict the 3-dimensional turbulent flow with strong secondary flow accuratly by standard k-.epsilon. equation model, and therefore it is necessary to introduce the higher order turbulent model or to correct the standard k-.epsilon. model for the more accurate predictions of these types of flow.

  • Free Cantilever Method(FCM) is one of the most effective construction methods when precast prestressed concrete box girders are erected in the construction site. The special feature of FCM is that precast segments are erected in cantilever on the pier and connected in the middle of span to form the complete superstructure. Therefore each structural subsystem will be shown in each construction step and it should be analyzed for design whenever the segment is erected. In this study, the computer program was developed to optimally design the P.C box girder bridge considering tile construction sequence and verified by comparing the calculated results with the data of existing P.C box girder bridges. the sensitivity analysis was performed to show the efficiency of the developed program.

  • For the thixoforming process beside an existing solidus-liquidus interval, the reheating conditions to obtain the globular microstructure are very important. It relies on the control of globular microstructure of semi-solid alloys that contain non-dendritic particles. To obtain the globular microstructure in cross section of billet, the optimal design of the induction coil is necessary. Therefore, in this paper the optimal coil design to minimize electromagnetic end effect will be proposed. The results of coil design were also applied to the reheating process to obtain a fine globular microstructure. Finally, reheating data base of aluminum alloys for thixoforming and FEM model for induction heating based on the optimal coil design have been proposed.

  • In this paper, we proposed image acquisition techniques that can reflect anatomical airway information lot breath change by EBCT Also, we proposed new method to detect automatically boundary of inner airway for acquired slice images using this image acquisition technology. We confirmed that new method detects boundary of inner airway effectively through computer simulation that apply image data about each slice position of airway. And, we could see change for cross section area of inner airway by time change. Therefore, we think that proposed method can utilize on quantitative analysis in clinical field.

  • Analysis of fluid flow in rectangular ducts has been conducted since it has a wide application. The purpose is to provide experimental data for the comparison with computational results. Velocity distributions inside a rectangular duct with $90^{\circ}$ mitered elbow are measured by 5W laser doppler velocity meter for Reynolds numbers of 4,049, 8,104, and 12,186. Flow rates obtained by the integration of measured velocity profile at three cross-sections, which are inlet, middle section after the elbow, and outlet, have errors less than 0.9% among them. Turbulent fluctuation components in two directions are found to have almost similar magnitude each other at a certain location due to the isotropic characteristic of turbulence.

  • In this paper, a novel multimode liquid metal-based pressure sensor is developed. The main body of the sensor is composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer. The structure of the sensor looks like a sandwich, in which the upper structure contains a cylindrical cavity, and the bottom structure contains a spiral microchannel, and the middle partition layer separates the upper and the bottom structures. Then, the liquid metal is injected into the top cavity and the bottom microchannel. Based on linear elastic fracture mechanics, the deformation of the microchannel cross-section is theoretically analyzed. The changes of resistance, capacitance, and inductance of the microchannel under pressure are deduced, and the corresponding theoretical models are established. The theoretical values of the pressure sensor are in good agreement with experimental data, implying that the developed theoretical model can explain the performance of the sensor well.
