  • Delamination means that cracking occurs on the interface layer between composite laminates. In this paper, to predict the delamination growth in composite laminates subjected to low-velocity impact, the unit load method was introduced, and an eighteen-node 3-D finite element analysis, based on assumed strain mixed formulation, was conducted. Strain energy release rate, necessary to determine the delamination growth, was calculated by using the virtual crack closure technique. The unit load method saves the computation time more than the re-meshing method. The virtual crack closure technique enables the strain energy release rate to be easily calculated, because information of the singular stress field near the crack tip is not required. Hence, the delamination growth in composite laminates that are subjected to low-velocity impact can be efficiently predicted using the above-mentioned methods.

  • In this paper, we consider the dynamic electromechanical behavior of an eccentric Yoffe permeable crack in a piezoelectric ceramic strip sandwiched between two elastic materials under the combined anti-plane mechanical shear and in-plane electrical loadings. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to the solution of two pairs of dual integral equations, which are then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The initial crack propagation orientation for PZT-5H piezoceramics is predicted by maximum energy release rate criterion.

  • The energy release rate for an interface crack in anisotropic dissimilar materials was obtained by the eigenfunction expansion method and also was analyzed numerically by the reciprocal work contour integral method. It was shown that the results for orthotropic dissimilar materials are consistent with the other worker's results.

  • The metis element method (Hung 1978) has been applied to analyse free edge interlaminar stresses and delamination in composite laminates, which are subjected to extension and bending. The paper recalls Lekhnitskii's solution for generalized plane strain state of composite laminate and Wang's singular solution for determination of stress singularity order and of eigen coefficients $C_m$ for delamination problem. Then the formulae of metis displacement finite element in two-dimensional problem are established. Computation of the stress intensity factors and the energy release rates are presented in details. The energy release rate, G, is computed by Irwin's virtual crack technique using metis elements. Finally, results of interlaminar stresses, the three stress intensity factors and the energy release rates for delamination crack in composite laminates under extension and bending are illustrated and compared with the literature to demonstrate the efficiency of the present method.

  • Real crack and fracture surfaces have irregularities producing zigzag contours. These irregularities are analysed by a fractal geometry which has been by a Mandelbrot. We obtained a fractal dimension which is one of the fractal characteristics. It is also estimated by an vertical section method that fractal characteristics in the fractured surfaces can be obtained as the crack grows. Moreover fractal fracture energy that corresponds to an energy release rate is shown to find relationships between fractal dimensions and crack behaviors. From these results, we concluded that a fractal characteristics analysis for a crack can be applied to a fracture mechanics.

  • A semi-infinite interfacial crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strips under out-of-plane clamped displacements is analyzed. Using Fourier integral transform the problem is formulated and the Wiener-Hopf equation is derived. By solving this equation the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained, where the results get more general expressions applicable not only to isotropic/orthotropic materials but also to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the interfacial crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor is obtained as a closed form, which is decreased as the velocity of crack propagation increases. The critical velocity where the stress intensity factor comes to zero is obtained, which agrees with the lower value between the critical values of parallel crack merged in the material 1 and 2 adjacent to the interface. Using the near tip fields of stresses and displacements, the dynamic energy release rate is also obtained as a form of the stress intensiy factor.

  • This study examined how the fracture toughness is affected according to the variation of the initial crack length and the fiber arranged angle using FEA method and experimental method. Therefore, the energy release rates were calculated and compared by J-integral method and VCCT(Virtual Crack Closure Technique). The results of fracture toughness test verified these results. At this time, the locus method was used in order to determine the energy release rate. When the results of FEA were compared with those of experiment, all of those decreased with the increase of angle between load and the fiber arranged direction. The decrease was due to reducing maximum load and stiffness, and the reason of reduction has been judged that the inplane shear stress.

  • A global-local finite element modeling technique is employed in this paper to predict the fatigue life of radial truck tires. This paper assumes that a flaw exists inside the tire, in the local model. The local model uses an FEM fracture analysis in conjunction with a global-local technique in ABAQUS. A 3D finite element local model calculates the energy release rate at the belt edge. Using the analysis of the local model, a study of the energy release rate is performed in the crack region and used to determine the crack growth rate analysis. The result considers how different driving conditions contribute to the detrimental effects of belt separation in truck tire failure. The calculation of the total mileage on four sizes of radial truck tires has performed on the belt edge separation. The effect of the change of belt width design on the fatigue lifetime of tire belt separation is discussed.

  • A variety of composite materials are applied to industries for the realization of light weight and high strength. Fiber-reinforced composites have different strength and range of application depending on the weaving method. The mechanical performance of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) in many areas has already been demonstrated. Recently, the application of hybridization has been increasing in order to give a compensation for brittleness of CFRP. Target materials are UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene), which has excellent cutting and chemical resistance, so it is applied not only to industrial safety products but also to places that lining performance is expected for household appliances. In this study, the CFRP and UHMWPE of plain weave, which are highly applicable to curved products, were molded into laminated hybrid composite materials by autoclave method. The mechanical properties and the mode I failure behavior between the layers were evaluated. The energy release rate G has decreased as the initial crack length ratio increased.

  • Fatigue life prediction is based on fracture mechanics and database which is established from experimental method. Rubber material also uses the same way for fatigue life prediction. But the absence of standardization of rubber material, various way of composition by each rubber company and uncertainty of fracture criterion makes the design of fatigue life by experimental method almost impossible. Tearing energy which has its origin in energy release rate is evaluated as fracture criterion of rubber material and the applicability of fatigue life prediction method are considered. The system of measuring tearing energy using the principal of virtual crack extension method and fatigue life prediction by the minimum number of experiments are proposed.
