  • An active clamp high step-up boost converter with a coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. In the proposed strategy, a coupled inductor is adopted to achieve a high voltage gain. The clamp circuit is included to achieve the zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) condition for both the main and clamp switches. A rectifier composed of a capacitor and a diode is added to reduce the voltage stress of the output rectifier diode. As a result, diodes with a low reverse-recovery time and forward voltage-drop can be utilized. Since the voltage stresses of the main and clamp switches are far below the output voltage, low-voltage-rated MOSFETs can be adopted to reduce conduction losses. Moreover, the reverse-recovery losses of the diodes are reduced due to the inherent leakage inductance of the coupled inductor. Therefore, high efficiency can be expected. Firstly, the derivation of the proposed converter is given and the operation analysis is described. Then, a steady-state performance analysis of the proposed converter is analyzed in detail. Finally, a 250 W prototype is built to verify the analysis. The measured maximum efficiency of the prototype is 95%.

  • This paper proposes a method to calculate the characteristics of a coupled hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearing of a HDD spindle motor. The governing equations for the journal and thrust bearings are the two dimensional Reynolds equations in ${\theta}z$ and $r\theta$ planes, respectively. Finite element method is appropriately applied to analyze the coupled journal and thrust bearing by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the journal and thrust bearings. The pressure in a coupled bearing is calculated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition and compared with that by using the Half-Sommerfeld boundary condition. The static characteristics are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. The flying height of spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the proposed method can describe HDB in a HDD system more accurately and realistically than the separate analysis of a journal or thrust bearing.

  • This paper concerns the finite element (FE) modeling approach for NATM tunneling in water bearing ground within the framework of stress-pore pressure coupled analysis. Fundamental interaction mechanism of ground and groundwater lowering was first examined and a number of influencing factors on the results of coupled FE analysis were identified. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as soil-water characteristics, location of hydraulic boundary conditions, the way of modeling drainage flow, among others. The results indicate that the soil-water characteristics play the most important role in the tunneling-induced settlement characteristics. Based on the results, modeling guidelines were suggested for stress-pore pressure coupled finite element modeling of NATM tunneling.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the design hypothesis of integration of parts from the viewpoint of axiomatic design. In parts integration, parts with the same functions are integrated into a single part. For the analysis, a motor actuator of an outside rear-view mirror with the type of an uncoupled design was used. The parts within the actuator are checked for determining the possibility of integration, by adopting the design hypothesis of integration of parts. The design hypothesis of integration of parts is based on a type of coupled design. However, the type of incomplete coupled design that resembles the type of an uncoupled design would be better than the type of a coupled design.

  • A characterization procedure for analyzing symmetric coupled MIS(Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor) transmission line is used the same procedure as a general single layer symmetric coupled line with perfect dielectric substrate from the extraction of the characteristic impedance and propagation constant for even- and odd-mode. In this paper, an analysis for a new substrate shielding symmetric coupled MIS structure consisting of grounded crossbar at the interface between Si and SiO2 layer using the Finite- Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) method is presented. In order to reduce the substrate effects on the transmission line characteristics, a shielding structure consisting of grounded crossbar lines over time-domain signal has been examined. Symmetric coupled MIS transmission line parameters for even- and odd-mode are investigated as the functions of frequency, and the extracted distributed frequency- dependent transmission line parameters and corresponding equivalent circuit parameters as well as quality factor for the new MIS crossbar embedded structure are also presented. It is shown that the quality factor of the symmetric coupled transmission line can be improved without significant change in the characteristic impedance and effective dielectric constant.

  • Optimization has been successfully applied to systems with a single discipline. As many disciplines are involved in coupled fashion, MDO (multidisciplinary design optimization) technology has been developed. MDO algorithms are trying to solve the coupled aspects generated from interdisciplinary relationship. In a general MDO algorithms, a large design problem is decomposed into small ones which can be easily solved. Although various methods have been proposed for MDO, the research is still in the early stage. This research proposes a new MDO method which is named as MDOIS (Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Based on Independent Subspaces). Many real engineering problems consist of physically separate components and they can be independently designed. The inter-relationship occurs through coupled physics. MDOIS is developed for such problems. In MDOIS, a large system is decomposed into small subsystems. The coupled aspects are solved via system analysis which solves the coupled physics. The algorithm is mathematically validated by showing that the solution satisfies the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition.

  • The seismic behavior of PRC coupling beam-hybrid coupled shear wall system is analyzed by using the finite element software ABAQUS. The stress distribution of steel plate, reinforcing bar in coupling beam, reinforcing bar in slab and concrete is investigated. Meanwhile, the plastic hinges developing law of this hybrid coupled shear wall system is also studied. Further, the effect of coupling ratio, section dimensions of coupling beam, aspect ratio of single shear wall, total height of structure and the role of slab on the seismic behavior of the new structural system. A fitting formula of plate characteristic values for PRC coupling beams based on different displacement requirements is proposed through the experimental date regression analysis of PRC coupling beams at home and abroad. The seismic behavior control method for PRC coupling beam-hybrid coupled shear wall system is proposed based on the continuous connection method and through controlling the coupling ratio, the roof displacement, story drift angle of hybrid coupled shear wall system, displacement ductility of coupling beam.

  • At high frequencies, the statistical approach such as statistical energy analysis(SEA) and energy flow analysis(EFA) has been applied for estimation of vibroacoustic responses of various built-up structures. The energy coupling relationship between finite coupled structures is required to estimate vibrational energetics of built-up structures. Mindlin plate theory includes the rotatory inertia and shear deformation effects which are dominant as frequency increases. In this paper, the wave transmission analysis is successfully performed for EFA of co-planar coupled Mindlin plates.

  • In this paper, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for gear heat treatment using simultaneous dual frequency (SDF) induction heating is conducted. To do this, thermal-electromagnetic coupled FE model is built. A two dimensional FE model of gear and heater is introduced to reduce computation time. For more time-efficient analysis, harmonic analysis for electromagnetic model is adopted and transient analysis model, for heat transfer model. Through the coupled analysis, it can be found that the proposed FE model can solve for SDF induction heating of gear and heat treatment parameters can also be determined.
